From the Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters
in Christ,
Our new Congregation Council met in retreat this past weekend where we did our usual review of the past year and began our planning for the upcoming ministry year. In the midst of this annual planning we reviewed our Vision for Ministry adopted in 2007. As we read the vision statement together, it felt good to affirm that we are living into the vision. We see signs of God's Kingdom breaking into our midst through the grace, hope, depth, and growth of the ministry we share together at Prince of Peace.
What a gift it is to see God working among us, and what an incentive it can be to see more of this emerging as we love and serve our community. As I stated in the annual report this year, "As much as I am grateful for the growth and expansion of ministry over my first seven years of ministry at Prince of Peace, I still see so many opportunities for us to expand and to deepen our understanding of what it means to be disciples of Jesus that are called to go and make disciples. In an anniversary year when we are celebrating our first fifty years of ministry, it is also essential that we are thinking about what is needed for the next fifty years of ministry if we are to continue to grow and to thrive as a community of faith. There is no question in my mind that the future of all congregations in the next fifty years will be tied to their ability to grow and expand their focus on discipleship. More and more, we are going to need intentional plans for being engaged in the world and community around us as the hands and feet of Christ, witnessing and serving like Jesus."
As our council begins our new year, we are committed to our vision to hold discipleship as the core of ministry at Prince of Peace. We are committed to enriching our ministry through our core strengths of worship and music, youth, and missional communities. These are our convictions as your leaders and we hope and pray that you will join us in daily growth in discipleship as together, we serve our community and world.
In Christ,
Pastor Jonathan

"A Firm Foundation:
Celebrating 50 Years of Prince of Peace"
On May 12, 1963 under the leadership of Pastor David Kruger, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was officially organized as a congregation of the Ohio Synod of the Lutheran Church in America. That Sunday, fifty-three adults and sixty children became charter members of the mission congregation. On Sunday, May 12th, we will have reached a half century of ministry in the Loveland area. Pastor Tom Stroeh, our congregation's third pastor, will be preaching at the four worship services that weekend.
Starting in May, there will be a display of photos from the first decade of our history located in the east corridor across from the mailboxes. During each succeeding month there will be a new decade of photos displayed. Thanks to Bonnie Larson, Doris Osborne and Pastor Tom for assembling these pictures from our archives. You will also be able to see refurbished posters from previous anniversary celebrations marking the significant events of our fifty years. They have been refurbished by Lynda Reiner. Thank you for your time, Lynda!
God has blessed us as a congregation in so many ways over the past half century, laying a firm foundation for the decades of service to come. Join us in celebrating the past as we prepare for the future.
- The 50th
Anniversary Committee

OUR GROUNDBREAKING Thank you to everyone who made our groundbreaking such a success. Following a unanimous vote to proceed with the project, the congregation processed to the tune and words of "Siyahumba" - "We are Marching in the Light of God." Following words from POP Kids Program Manager Angie Seiller and Rich Peters from the building committee, Pastor Jonathan offered a blessing for the new space. Then digging with 6 gold shovels, church leaders - Pastor Jonathan; President Bill Clevidence; Sue McIlvoy, the church business manager; Rich Peters, chair of the church building committee; Al Kressler, the building committee's liaison to the construction team with Bonnie Larson, a charter member of the church; and Earl Crossland of Single Point - turned the first dirt. Brian Gilliand of Single Point was also in attendance. After the first set of digging, everyone else got in on the action, with members young and old turning up their piece of dirt. The Loveland Farmers' Market would like to thank Prince of Peace for opening the PLC doors to us for nine indoor markets this winter.
On average 200 - 300 people shopped the 18+ vendors each time. Note: This was the largest indoor market in the Cincinnati area.
One of our vendors sums it up best: "Thank you for letting us use your church, it sounds like your church, as ours is, is very active in community events...God will bless you & your church for opening your church hall for the market event."

INKING OF YOU
Meet on Thursday, May 2 at 10:00 a.m. We will be making thank you and birthday cards in May. We will meet again on June 6 and August 1. Watch the announcements in the worship folder the week end before those dates to learn what kind of cards we will be creating. Supplies are furnished and no experience is needed.

Thank you for supporting the building project with your vote on April 14 and participating in the groundbreaking. It was perfect weather to turn that symbolic first shovel of dirt.
So next up is a 12-month construction period, which would put completion after Easter next year. The construction fencing and barricades across the east and south ends of the parking lot are in place. While we won't lose parking spaces at the south end during construction, there will be a few lost on the east end. Unfortunately, most of the trees on the east side will be knocked down and the grassy area in the rear of the church will be churned up by bulldozers as grading is done for the new parking and driveway. The Durango house will be demolished, the basement filled in and a second retention area will be dug on the Durango Street side.
It is hoped that the remodeling work on the classrooms and music room will be done during the summer when our programs wind down. In addition, work on the three new classrooms should also take place then. The beauty of building the new Sanctuary behind the existing one is that it can be constructed without interfering with our regular worship activity. When work does impact the existing Sanctuary, it can be shielded with plastic for the weekend services. When we do the tie-ins, and the pews are moved to the new Sanctuary, we will worship in the Parish Life Center for a short period of time.
As the present Sanctuary (the new narthex) is remodeled and the new entrance is added, accessibility to the present narthex will be limited.
Our loan with the Mission Investment Fund of the ELCA will be at 4 5/8% for seven years. We will then have to refinance, typical of this type of loan, but it will be amortized as if it were for 25 years. The total is $2,463,000 which covers the peak amount borrowed during construction, and will then be "recast" to a lower number after construction and when the three-year pledges are all in. This amount includes rolling in the present mortgage balance of about $900,000. The construction budget based on the contractor bids is $2,485,000, a very similar number, and it includes contingency of 3% to cover unexpected events and opportunities.
Take another look at the drawings that are posted in the narthex and visualize our new worship, fellowship, and education ministries in the new building. God has been good to us at Prince of Peace, and we rejoice that we are able to make this exciting step in His work here.
Rich Peters
Building Committee Chairman

Women's Bible Study
May 5, 7-8:30 p.m.
The final session of Women's Bible Study "Gathered by God" series will be held on Sunday, May 5, at 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. in the Parlor. Note that this is a change from our usual week, due to Mother's Day falling on the 2nd Sunday.
Over the past 7 months, we have discussed multiple examples in both the Old and New Testaments of how God "gathers" people in communities and into ministry. This final session is called "Time to Go" and is in the May issue of Gather Magazine. All are welcome to join us as you are able! It is helpful, but not necessary, to read the materials ahead of time. For more information, contact Debbie Heidrich at debbie.heidrich@gmail.com or 777-2772.

POP CORKS MAY 2013 EVENT:
Chocolate Tasting & Wine Tasting Combined!
May 18, 7 p.m.
POP Corks will meet at the home of Cassie and Andy Brissette on Saturday, May 18 at 7 pm. The theme this month will be "Chocolate and Wine." This church small group consists of wine enthusiasts who welcome anyone (21 or over) to participate in a delightful evening of fellowship and wine tasting. The gathering allows us to meet and get to know other church members, who perhaps attend a different worship service, in a relaxed setting. Each couple brings a bottle of wine (usually in the $10-20 range) to taste and an appetizer or dessert to share.
Cassie will guide us in the chocolate tasting, and Frank Girolami will give us some thoughts to ponder in pairing wine and chocolate.
The sign-up sheet and directions will be posted on the "IN" bulletin board. Any questions? Please contact Debbie Heidrich at 777-2772 or debbie.heidrich@gmail.com.
We look forward to seeing YOU!

CATECHISM
As we wrap up another catechism year, it is time to look at how far we've come! Throughout this year, our 7th and 8th grade students have jumped head-first into Scripture.
We have taken an in-depth look at the stories of our faith. We started at Genesis and wrap up in May with Pentecost. We've had fun together during retreats, multiple games of gaga, and many re:form videos. Together, we will have completed over 500 worship summaries, sang over a dozen worship and praise songs, and flipped through many pages of our Lutheran Study Bibles. It's been a great year! Remember to keep your faith turned on this summer by worshiping with your family, serving together, and talking about God's love at home.

POP Kids Update
a ministry of Prince of Peace
The year is quickly coming to an end. Our last day before summer will be Friday, May 17. Our theme this month is "We Can" as we review all the things that we have learned through the year. In addition, a few classes are building castles in their classrooms as we learn about fairytales or for when dads visit us on their special day and answer the question," if my dad were king"? We end the month with a visit from the Loveland School Bus so our graduating kids can learn about their big bus rides in the future. It all makes you want to be a preschooler again!

We still have a few spaces in our 2-1/2 year old class and our pre-K class for 2013-14. We are completely full in our 3's classes. Please call (683-1600) or e-mail (popkids@fuse.net) the school with any questions or to set up a tour.
Thank you for your continued support and prayers.
Serving in Him,
Angie Seiller

Closing Thoughts from our President
Dear brothers and sisters of Christ our Lord,
Spring has sprung and so will our new addition! What an exciting time for our congregation and for those in our community. Just as Prince of Peace began 50 years ago with a small but faith filled group we stand today ready to continue the mission they started not so many years ago. As we processed on Sunday to the ground breaking ceremony singing, "we are marching in the light of God", we truly are in God's magnificent light. This light has been made even brighter because of a generous and giving congregation. It is your generous support, service and prayers that make this new addition possible. Thank you! With the construction there will be many changes to our church and the grounds themselves. We will work hard to keep you all appraised of the construction and the progress that is being made.
Again, thank you for your prayers, service and support. May God Bless each of you and your families--
Peace,
Bill Clevidence
Council President
