From the Pastor
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In the 7th chapter of John's Revelation, he paints a beautiful image of the victory feast in heaven. He writes, "These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb." The strong imagery of Revelation always takes me back to the imagery of Isaiah. Whenever I feel alone, whenever I feel at a loss, whenever I feel that I have lost my way, it is these books, these visionaries that keep me steady on the path. "Do not remember the former things, or consider the things of old. I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert." -Isaiah 43.
With Pastor Grant leaving and the deaths of Al Geisinger and Paul Leiter- this has been a season of loss here at Prince of Peace. It has been a time that it would be easy to get lost in the wilderness. Yet the Word of God, as Pastor Tom reminded us in his recent sermon, keeps calling out to us with a light that shines in the darkness, marking our path toward home.
When we light the new paschal candle this Easter Vigil it will burn a little brighter for me. It will be a bittersweet moment without Paul there to start the fire, or Pastor Grant standing next to me as we march into a new Easter season together. Yet the light comes. Christ's resurrection is made visible once again, and we will follow the light into the new thing that God is once again preparing in our midst.
As we reflect on the sacrifice of the Lamb of God in this Lenten season, I pray that we always keep one eye on the sacrifice and one eye on the redemption. We always hold at heart the tension of having a Christ who is both crucified and risen. The crucified Christ is essential for us knowing that God comes all the way into our suffering without holding anything back. God will not abandon us. And the risen Christ reminds us that, while God will not abandon us, God will also not let us remain where we are. God is always leading us onward into the light and into the new, more glorious future that God is preparing for us.
This is a Lent where the crucified Christ brings even greater comfort in the midst of loss and sadness that I know God shares with us. Thanks be to God for this presence. And thanks be to God that Easter is coming, the victory feast of the Lamb, our hope and our tomorrow.
Thank you God for the new day that you are preparing for us. By your grace Lord, lift up our eyes so that we see the brightness of your dawning. Make a way in our wilderness. Make a river in our desert. God lead us by your pillar of fire, all the way home.
In Christ,
Pastor Jonathan

Easter Serving in Worship Rehearsal
Wednesday, March 26
Are you scheduled to volunteer to serve in worship for the Easter Vigil, Easter Sunday, or the week after Easter? If so, we are holding a rehearsal on Wednesday evening, March 26 in the PLC to provide guidance on how things change in the PLC vs. a regular Sunday in the sanctuary. With over 1,000 worshipers here on Easter and Christmas, it takes some prior coordination to support these celebratory worship services. We continually improve each year, so even if you have attended in the past, please join us to be debriefed on the plans for this year.
- 6:30 - 7:00 pm Acolytes
- 7:00 - 7:30 pm Assisting Ministers, Ushers, Communion Assistants, and Crucifers
- 7:30 - 8:00 pm Usher Specific Guidance
If you cannot attend or have questions, please contact
Karen Skarda (kskarda@popluther.org or 683-4244).

First Communion at Prince of Peace
As Lutherans we love the Word and the Sacraments. We believe that we receive God's grace through them. First Communion is your chance to explore with your child what it means to receive God's grace through the Sacrament of Holy Communion. This is an important milestone for your child.
First Communion Class
Spring Session 2013
Saturday March 9, 9:30-11 am at POP
Saturday March 16, 9:30-11 am at POP
Children receive First Communion:
Saturday or Sunday March 16 & 17 in worship.
Please sign up by March 3.
This is a wonderful opportunity for your family to go deeper into your faith formation together and for your child to receive communion for the first time. First Communion materials are geared for 1st - 3rd graders, but if you as a parent feel that your child is ready earlier, or if your student is older than 3rd grade and wants to receive First Communion, talk to Pastor Jonathan and we will work to accommodate you.

Sunday, April 7, 12:45 pm
Everyone is welcome to join the POP crew on a visit to the Museum Center to see the Dead Sea Scrolls. The 5th & 6th grade youth group and their families will be going on April 7 after Sunday worship.
What: In 1947, a shepherd stumbled upon a hidden cave along the shore of the Dead Sea. Concealed inside were ancient scrolls that had not been seen for 2,000 years. After extensive excavation, a total of 972 remarkably preserved scrolls were found, including the earliest Biblical texts ever discovered. Now known as the Dead Sea Scrolls, they have been called the most significant archaeological find of the last century. On Sunday, April 7th, you can witness these ancient handwritten texts of the words that shaped the future of the Western world at the blockbuster exhibition, Dead Sea Scrolls: Life and Faith in Ancient Times. Join Mary Ellen and Sheryl as we carpool downtown to the Cincy Museum Center to see the Dead Sea Scroll exhibit.
When: Sunday April 7 - leaving POP at 12:45 pm- and returning no later than 4:30 pm. Meet in the atrium after the 11:00 service, bring and eat brown-bagged lunches, then drive together for our 1:30 pm group start time.
How: Sign up on the "UP" bulletin board. Costs are $19 per adult and $10 per student. Unaccompanied 5th/6th graders must have a signed permission slip turned in to Mary Ellen.
Reserve a space with us by April 2.

A Day in the Life of an IHN Client:
Sunday February 10, twelve of us from POP attended a dinner hosted by First Presbyterian of Glendale. The purpose was to inform our IHN volunteers what the clients do during the day when they are not at our churches. Our hosts served up the same chicken dinner that they serve the IHN guests when it is their night to host. It was total comfort food-fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, mac and cheese, broccoli and cheese casserole, applesauce, and cupcakes. We learned that the bus picks up our guests at 6:30 am at each church and transports them to the IHN Center downtown. Everyone gets bus tokens-the kids to get to school, the adults go to job interviews. Younger children attend a preschool at the Center, or if they are too young for that, they can stay with their parents. The IHN staff works on getting housing for their clients, financial classes, and addressing other issues. Many more families seek the help of IHN than can be accommodated in the churches all over the city. If they cannot be accommodated when they apply, they must spend one more night on someone's couch or in their car and then apply again. In the last year, IHN has noted that there are more 2 parent families seeking housing and the Moms are younger. Those attending from Prince of Peace were: Anita and Warren Winning, Glen Haugen (Kathy was sick), Barb and Mike Wood, Jeannie and Norm Kjos, Dale Mowry, Ruth Bell and Rudy Riedel, and Alan and Sigrid Kluender.
We will host again on March 8 at Forest Chapel United Methodist Church.
We will be housed in this church while Christ Church undergoes a building program. We hope you can join us in this ministry. To learn more about IHN visit

"Notes from the Edge"
Happenings from the Edge House at UC
The Edge House is the Lutheran Campus Ministry (LCM)
on the edge of UC campus led by Pastor Alice Connor.
What We Do at the Edge House:
Each semester, we pack up our espresso machine and all the gear (several tubs worth!) and head over to the art school DAAP and to a nearby residence hall Stratford Heights. We set up a makeshift coffee shop and give away espresso drinks until the wee hours of the morning. Last semester, we served over 220 students. It's our way of saying that God loves them and that love is free.
--Pastor Alice
How You Can Get Involved at the Edge House:
- Adopt one Edge House student for regular prayer.
- Offer an hour or two a week as a greeter-particularly over lunch, we need folks to welcome students, answer the phone, and just relax in a fun environment.
- Help plant tulip/daffodil bulbs or spread mulch for the curb appeal of the house in March.
See what we're doing at the Edge House and get more information about how you can get involved at www.edge-uc.org.
Please contact Pastor Alice Connor
at aconnor@goodshepherd.com for more information.

During the Lent and Easter season, POP is joining other congregations from across the nation by hosting a "Buck-a-Chick" sale. Proceeds support ELCA World Hunger.
For $1, you can purchase and decorate one of the paper chicks. A dollar is all it takes to provide a family living in poverty with a little chick. Soon enough, the chick begins producing eggs. Its eggs make nutritious protein-rich meals, and can be sold at the marketplace for income - helping a family escape hunger for good!
Buck-a-Chick coloring sheets are available at the Welcome Center. It's a fun project for the young and the young-at-heart. (Who doesn't like to color?!) The completed colorful, creative chicks will be posted on the walls in the Sunday School hallway.
Give your offering during Sunday School or at the Sunday School Welcome Table on Sunday mornings.
Mary Ellen Helms (mehelms@popluther.org).

BUILDING UPDATE
REBID: We have decided to rebid part of the project because the bid price from the preferred general contractor was higher than the estimate. The architects worked with him to find cost reductions and construction savings, but that still didn't meet our budgeted amount. The original bid requests were sent to only three contractors, but now we will open it up to the broader contractor community, still reserving the privilege of accepting the bid from the best and lowest contractor, not necessarily the absolute lowest. In a similar project for a public building, the architects recently received sixteen bids and found that the low bid came in less than the estimated cost, which suggests this is a good strategy. The bids for plumbing, heating and air conditioning, electrical, and fire protection came out in total slightly below the estimate and will not be rebid.
OTHER ISSUES: In our work to reduce the construction cost, the Building Committee has made a number of changes in finishing and trim items, but not in the size and footprint of the new Sanctuary and Education area, or in turning the existing Sanctuary into a Narthex. Once we have all the cost numbers, they will be shared with the Congregation along with the final design, and we will have a vote to accept the project and the accompanying mortgage on it. The work on cost and the rebidding will result in slowing the start of construction by a month or more, but put it into the more-favorable springtime construction season. We have also been told that we should expect a thirteen-month construction timetable, a month shorter than previously estimated.
GREAT OUTCOME: Sometimes not everything falls into place according to the initial timetable, but this is typical of building projects like this. We know the building will be built, we will be pleased with it and most importantly, it will be a fine place where the Lord is worshipped and His work is done, and the delays will quickly fade from our memory.
Rich Peters
Building Committee Chairman

At Prince of Peace, the Discretionary Fund is a fund whereby members may contribute money (in addition to their current (general) fund and building fund contributions) which is then distributed to individuals who live in the Loveland School District or any POP member who needs financial assistance. Twenty dollar Kroger gift cards are also distributed to assist with the purchase of gas or food. There is a $200 yearly limit set for non-members. Currently, people in need can visit the church on Wednesday afternoons to request assistance. In January, thirty-seven individuals were served which is the highest in recent history. The fund is not always solvent and therefore people are referred to other organizations in the area like LIFE Food Pantry, St. Columban, North Star, and Good Shepherd. The following are the 2012 statistics: Contributions received: $14,613 Distributions: rent: $4,680 utilities: $6,283 misc: $1,545 Kroger gift cards distributed: 119 Requests granted: 182 times Requests denied either no funds or did not qualify: 77 times Thank you for your generosity in sustaining this fund. If you would like to contribute to this fund, please mark your donation for the "Discretionary Fund".

A Look at What's Happening in
We are families striving to see God at work in our lives through regular times of play, prayer, and service.
February was a busy month for connect4! In addition to gathering for meals and faith sharing on the first and third Tuesday, we served at Kids Against Hunger on February 9. Twenty parents and kids helped pack meals for the hungry. (image above and left). Our other special event was our first ever connect4 Talent Show! Kids and adults shared their talents and silliness on stage on Friday, February 22.
We hope you can try a connect4 gathering or GODS Time with us in March. This group of families is a low maintenance, high fun group. If you're searching for ways to grow your family's faith - this is one way to do that alongside others who are committed to being families on mission.
March 5 & 19: Gather at 6 pm at the Eilerts' for faith, food, & friendship!
March 12: Go Out and Do Something by preparing and serving a meal to the Loveland community with the Supper Club.
As always, consider popping in for a time with no commitment - we'd be pleased to share a meal with you!

More Than Paws
In the December Newsletter, there was a mention of Cheryl Cowell's therapy dog, Angel. Therapy dogs can go to hospitals, nursing homes, libraries and several other places to bring joy to others! (They are not service dogs for the blind, this is a much more involved process)
Could your dog be used in this manner? - One way to find out is to go to the website TDI-dog.org. TDI stands for Therapy Dogs International. - Another way is to attend a screening session to see whether your dog has the needed temperment. The next one is Saturday, March 2 at University Hospital in Cincinnati. For more information, contact TDI evaluator, Sandra Kordis-Rubin at (513) 793-7082 or email: sandyandbarry@zoomtown.com. POP Kids Update
a ministry of Prince of Peace
Security Review:
In light of the tragedy at Sandy Hook in Connecticut, we felt that it was a good time to review our security systems at POP Kids, as well as, Prince of Peace, at least until we have our new building that will have better systems. We all believe that it critical to maintain the open/inclusive environment that is POP but still are sure we are doing what we can to create a safe environment for all.
How can you help?
When you enter the church during POP Kids School hours, please just greet the receptionist or front office and let them know what you are doing i.e., "I'm going to meet with Mary Ellen.", "I need to go to the loft to get a Christmas tree.", "Just going to my mailbox.", etc. It's easy and it helps us know who's in the building.

Learning about good health:
We had fun this month learning about being healthy. The picture below is one of our classes learning yoga.

God's time:
With Pastor Grant leaving, we decided it was a good time to revamp our God's time which Mary Ellen and Grant used to do every week. Now we do a bigger event once a month with Mary Ellen and the teachers expand on it in the classroom throughout the month. Our first one was a huge success; the teachers and children loved it. If you come to church during Holy week, be sure to look at our Lenten Walk in the halls of POP.

Closing Thoughts from our President
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace. These words are spoken or sung at nearly every communion service at Prince of Peace. As we experience this Lenten season, it seems more appropriate than ever to really reflect on these words. The murder of our beloved fellow member, Paul Leiter, has brought the evil of this world to our doorstep in a very personal and painful way. While we rejoice in the promise of the resurrection, we also struggle with the senselessness of such an act and are bound together by our grief. As baptized believers we know that God promises to be with us through the good and bad. I believe God gives us each other to lean on. One of the greatest gifts this congregation gives to its members is love and support. I pray that we will always be a congregation that provides comfort and support to those in need. May the merciful Lamb of God take away the sins of this world and wrap us in his comfort and peace now and always. Amen. As the Lenten season continues this month, please consider joining us for a midweek prayer service (Wednesdays at 7 pm) and Bible Class with Pastor Pete Rudowski that immediately follows in the sanctuary. Pastor Tom Stroeh has written some wonderful Lenten devotionals that you can receive as a daily email during the Lenten season. At the heart of these devotionals are individual stories of love and discipleship that Pastor Tom experienced as a Pastor at Prince of Peace for over 30 years. These are a great way to start your day and to realize all that this family of believers called Prince of Peace has meant to the community over the past 50 years! The month of March culminates with Holy Week and the resurrection of our Lord and Savior. Please check this newsletter for dates and times of services during this most sacred week of the church year. There are lots of ways to help during this very busy time. See this newsletter for opportunities to serve in a capacity such as an usher, acolyte or greeter or as part of a set up or take down crew as we prepare to worship in the larger PLC space for Easter weekend. Thank you for your help! I hope you have taken a few moments to glean the articles and announcements in this newsletter. There are many wonderful ways to become involved in ministry at Prince of Peace! I would encourage you to consider being a part of a missional community, the Interfaith Hospitality Network, the POP Prayer Team or a Matthew 25 volunteer. If you have not joined this community of faith yet and are looking for a dynamic and loving family of faith to be a part of, please consider attending our Discovering Membership classes that will begin on April 7. Finally, I hope you will take a moment to review Rich Peters' article on the state of the building project. While we all would like to be moving some dirt at this point, your leadership team wants to be sure we are getting this right and that we are being good stewards of the monies you have pledged to us for this project. The general contractor bids did not come in as we had hoped so we have decided to follow the advice of our design build firm (VSWC/Single Point) and do an open bidding process for a general contractor. We have also value engineered aspects of this project to bring costs closer to the original estimate for this project. We should have a more detailed explanation about all of this by the time we meet for the Annual Meeting on March 17. Speaking of the Annual Meeting, I hope you will plan to join us on the 17th around 12:15 pm in the PLC for that meeting. We will be ratifying our new council slate for the coming year at that meeting and electing a new nominating committee member for a three year term. I am very grateful to the men and women that have agreed to serve on council for the coming year. It is a very dedicated and gifted group of individuals that will do a great job leading us through a year filled with opportunities (for building expansion, calling a new pastor, celebrating 50 years of existence and growing ministries to support our mission and vision). We will report on the ministries that we have been growing over the past year and provide a glimpse of 50th Anniversary festivities. A light lunch will also be provided at the meeting. See you there! May the joy of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, bring you comfort and peace. In Christ,
Kathy Weimer, Council President
