All over the country, especially in St. Louis (including several local UCC congregations) and at Peace UCC, many people are willing to work on our own internalized, perhaps subconscious, racism. Do you want to be part of such a group that is open to both Peace UCC and the local community?
In 2011, Amy Hunter started the first WW group here and hundreds of people have participated since. She also started WW groups in 16 YWCAs across the country. Here in St. Louis, there are also groups for African-Americans & other people of color on internalized racism. Based on the material available at http://www.witnessingwhiteness.com/Witnesssing_Main/Workshop_Series.html
Each WW group meets 10 times-particular dates are sometimes rescheduled for holidays, weather, etc. That is usually worked out at the first session. The YWCA facilitator doesn't expect participants will make every session or read every word of the WW book. The work in the WW groups is related to but separate from the text.
The YWCA has a supply of books because ordering takes a while (the publisher prints when it has an order) and are $23. An e-book is also available from online sources.
Beyond the Book's goal is to commit to sponsoring a group by the end of December so that in January the YWCA will begin to coordinate groups that will start in March/April timeframe. If Peace UCC wants to have a group, the target number of participants is 25 and the Y will provide facilitators.
Do you want to go Beyond the Book? Please contact Janet Rundquist if you'd like to participate or have questions. jsrkitten@aol.com.

December 17, Benefit Concert, 7pm
Gian Carlo Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors was the first-ever opera written exclusively for television. Its first, live airing was on the Columbia Broadcasting Service on Christmas Eve, 1951. Amahl was an instant success receiving an encore performance a few weeks later.
Launching the Hallmark company's made-for-tv movies, this story of a lame, shepherd boy, his mother, and the three night visitors draws attention to the selfless acts that are such a part of the Christmas Season.
The CCCUCC choir will offer a benefit concert performance on Thursday, December 17th at 7:30 p.m. This event will be a concert-style performance where the artists sing without staging, costume, or scenery.
All the proceeds of the free will offering will go to Love Fund for Children. The admission is free, but a suggested donation of $5 will help make this concert a significant benefit for this remarkable agency. More details are available at www.cccucc.com.

2016
January 1, Back Bay Mission 2017 Calendar Opens
Back Bay Mission will open its 2017 Mission Trip Calendar on January 1, 2016. Mission immersion experiences at Back Bay Mission are a great opportunity to serve the poor and marginalized of the Mississippi Gulf Coast while learning about poverty and social justice. They're also a wonderful chance to build relationships within your congregation and with other congregations who are serving at the Mission.
Here's what you need to know: The 2017 Mission Trip Calendar opens on January 1, 2016. Beginning on January 1, you'll be able to request mission dates by emailing our volunteer coordinator. We only accept requests for mission trip dates through email. Email provides us with a timestamp and helps make sure that dates are reserved on a first come, first served basis.
The calendar fills up fast. This is especially true for prime dates during summer vacation and spring break. It's best if you have a couple of dates in mind, just in case the date you would prefer has already been reserved. If none of the dates you would like are available - or if the calendar is completely full when you request a date - we can put you on a waiting list.
Our fees have changed. In order to keep up with rising costs and the high demand on our housing rehabilitation program, we've made a minor adjustment to our mission trip fees. There is now a $200 per group administrative fee, a $75 per person housing fee, and a $100 per person materials fee.
January 14, SLA Sacred Conversations/Racial Justice Group, 7pm
The purpose for the group is to gather like-minded UCC folk to educate and inform ourselves and our communities about race, racism, and privilege, and to serve as a resource and a catalyst for churches and communities in embracing and proclaiming the diversity of God's people as sacred. We discern together where God is calling us, month to month. Meet at Eden Seminary Library Conference Room.
February 20-March 3, St. Lucas Trip to Israel & Jordan
Visiting the land of the Bible is an important pilgrimage to make. It's a complicated land where great and tragic events have occurred - some of which are described in the Bible itself, others have occurred across the ages, and more recently in the on-going struggle between Israelis and Palestinians over the same small patch of land. This trip is designed to offer a first-hand look at this multi-layered story, visiting sites where the historical events of the Bible and beyond occurred. We will visit both Jewish and Palestinian villages and cities. The land is rich with story and the connections are made that intersect our lives and our faith. If interested, contact St. Lucas UCC office for a fact sheet giving a detailed description of the trip including cost. Call: 314-843-2100
