Witnessing Whiteness
All over the country, especially in St. Louis (including several local UCC congregations) and at Peace UCC, many people are willing to work on our own internalized, perhaps subconscious, racism. Do you want to be part of such a group that is open to both Peace UCC and the local community?
In 2011, Amy Hunter started the first WW group here and hundreds of people have participated since. She also started WW groups in 16 YWCAs across the country. Here in St. Louis, there are also groups for African-Americans & other people of color on internalized racism. Based on the material available at http://www.witnessingwhiteness.com/Witnesssing_Main/Workshop_Series.html
Each WW group meets 10 times-particular dates are sometimes rescheduled for holidays, weather, etc. That is usually worked out at the first session. The YWCA facilitator doesn't expect participants will make every session or read every word of the WW book. The work in the WW groups is related to but separate from the text.
The YWCA has a supply of books because ordering takes a while (the publisher prints when it has an order) and are $23. An e-book is also available from online sources.
Beyond the Book's goal is to commit to sponsoring a group by the end of December so that in January the YWCA will begin to coordinate groups that will start in March/April timeframe. If Peace UCC wants to have a group, the target number of participants is 25 and the Y will provide facilitators.
Do you want to go Beyond the Book?

February 20-March 3, St. Lucas Trip to Israel & Jordan
Visiting the land of the Bible is an important pilgrimage to make. It's a complicated land where great and tragic events have occurred - some of which are described in the Bible itself, others have occurred across the ages, and more recently in the on-going struggle between Israelis and Palestinians over the same small patch of land. This trip is designed to offer a first-hand look at this multi-layered story, visiting sites where the historical events of the Bible and beyond occurred. We will visit both Jewish and Palestinian villages and cities. The land is rich with story and the connections are made that intersect our lives and our faith. If interested, contact St. Lucas UCC office for a fact sheet giving a detailed description of the trip including cost. Call: 314-843-2100
