August 1, Women's Fellowship sponsored Chicken Dinner, 3-8pm

 

St Martin's UCC, 7890 Dittmer Ridge Rd, Dittmer, MO 63023 --- carry outs, a/c dining, and handicap accessible.  Dinners served from 3-8 pm -- adults $10 / kids 4-11 - $4 3 and under free.  The is the BEST chicken in town served with homemade sides - German potato salad and slaw, and choice of corn or green beans. August 1, YMCA Youth Forum on Race, 8:30am-Noon
 
The YMCA will host a Youth Forum at University of Missouri St.Louis (UMSL) in JC Penney Building 1.  This forum will facilitate discussions on how to create positive change in schools and communities.   There will be a panel discussion for  approximately 1-1/2 hours, followed by break-out sessions on topics covering policing and racial inclusion.  Youth ages 13-18 are welcomed for this event.  Event flyer.  Please contact Mary Rich for more information:  314-835-9160.
August 2-7, Vacation Bible School

Do you want to put on a play about Jonah and the Whale for Vacation Bible School this summer, August  2 to August 7?  Come to Parkway United Church of Christ,  2841 N. August 3-7, Vacation Bible School, 9am-Noon

Samuel UCC's program is SonSpark Labs, a week of laboratory adventures and fun! We'll learn that when God created the world, He made all kinds of scientific laws that we can explore with experiments.  We will have a great time with lively songs, hilarious skits, creative crafts, exciting games, Bible stories, tasty snacks.  On top of that, we will be helping children learn that God's plan for everyone is Jesus!   SonSpark Labs can be an inspirational and exciting adventure for your entire family!

Children ages 3 to 12, $40 first child; $30 siblings; Aftercare available for $25 per day until 3pm.

August 4, Book Signing with Leah Gunning Francis, 7pm

Dr. Leah Gunning Francis' new book, Ferguson & Faith: Sparking Leadership & Awakening Community is being published August 4 by Chalice Press and the Forum for Theological Exploration.  Dr. Gunning Francis is Associate Dean of Contextual Education and Assistant Professor of Christian Education at Eden Theological Seminary.   

 

A book signing is being hosted by Left Bank Books on August 4 at 7:00 pm  and everyone is invited to attend!  Left Bank Books is located at 399 N. Euclid, St. Louis, MO 63108.

August 7-9, Rainbow Camp at DuBois Center

This August, Rainbow Camp will be coming to DuBois Center, the camping ministry facility of the Illinois South Conference UCC. The camp is designed for LGBTQ families, with a focus on being a safe space centered around faith. All kinds of families are welcome, be they gay parents with straight kids, gay kids with straight parents, single parents, or couples with no kids. The camp is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 7 at 7pm through Sunday, Aug. 9 at 1pm.  Activities will include boating, swimming, horseback riding, bonfires, crafts, worship and much more. The facility is about an hour east of the St. Louis area, just south of I-64. August 8-9, Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer Visit

 

The St. Louis Association Council invites you to two opportunities for reflection with our General Minister and President-elect, the Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer.  There will be two opportunities to hear and meet John on Saturday, and one to worship with John on Sunday.  Please share this information in your upcoming church bulletins

John will share his passion and much needed expertise in the work that European American church members need to do to be faithful and humble partners in bringing God's justice to our communities.  John's doctoral work focused on white privilege. On this anniversary weekend, John invites the United Church of Christ into a deep, nuanced, and honest examination of, and meaningful dialogue about, what George Lipsitz calls 'our possessive investment in whiteness.' Wherever you find yourself in the conversation about race in the church today, this conversation will be rich.

August 9, Annual BBQ and Family Fun Day
 

Friedens Peace UCC, located at 3560 Mill Street in New Melle, MO  is hosting a Family Fun Day & BBQ. There will be games throughout the day available to play with friends and family.  In addition, there will be scheduled events like a Washer Tournament starting at 1 pm, a turtle race (bring your own turtle) and/or sack race at 2:00,  an adult and child three legged race at 3:00, balloon toss at 4:00 and a second sack race at 5:00.  There will be delicious BBQ Pork Steaks & Grilled Chicken Dinners as well as Hot Dogs.  The Dinner price is $10.00 adult/ $5.00 child and includes corn on the cob, slaw, baked beans and ice cream. Coffee, tea & lemonade will be provided.  Hot dogs are $3.00 each.  Coolers are acceptable.  There will be a 50/50 drawing also.

 

What a great way to celebrate the end of the summer!  Come take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy a day with your friends and family where you don't have to cook, just relax, take part in activities or just hang out and watch the fun!   For more information call 636-828-5980.

August 9-15, Emmaus Joint Mission Camps


Does your church want to participate in Mission Camps but have too few campers to make a full camp? GOOD NEWS! Emmaus is offering a JOINT MISSION CAMP.

Come join us in the Missouri River valley on the beautiful Emmaus campus for a week of service, growth and fun. If your group has youth and a sponsor (1 to 5 ratio), join a combined camp with other groups, August 9 - 15, 2015. Some individual campers may be able to be added with another sponsor. Your campers will spend time and build relationships with our residents every morning and work on physical projects each afternoon. While with us, your campers whether they be children, adolescents or adults will grow spiritually and mature as they develop relationships and friendships with other campers and will surely develop relationships with the residents. Many campers come back and greet the same residents from year to year, corresponding through email or conventional letters. Groups develop lasting relationships also and return year after year. We are asking each participate to donate $50 for food and lodging for the week. Beds and mattresses will be provided, but ALL bedding, towels and personal items will need to be brought with the camper.

August 13, 14, 15, Rummage Sale

  

St. Paul's UCC, Gerald, MO will host a Rummage Sale beginning at  3-7pm August 13th, 8am-6pm August 14th, and 8am-Noon August 15th.

 

August 14, Annual Church Picnic, 5pm


Bethany UCC, 30 Bethany Church Road, Berger, MO, will hold it's Annual Church Picnic, beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Sandwiches, beverages, homemade ice cream and pie. Bazaar, cake walk, games for children, and music. Everyone welcome! On Route Z about 2 miles off Hwy. 100, between Hermann and New Haven.
August 15, Fish Fry, 11am-4pm

Christ the King UCC at 11370 Old Halls Ferry Rd., Florrisant, MO,  is hosting a Fish Fry.  Price for a fish dinner is $10 and a sandwich for $7.50 with choice of catfish, buffalo, or whiting (jack salmon).  Dinners are served with spaghetti, pickles, onions and choice of potato salad or slaw and a dessert.  For more information call 314-741-6808.
August 23, Final Worship at Emmaus, 3pm

Emmaus Homes announced plans for the final worship service to be held on Sunday, August 23 at 3 pm in the chapel located on the former St. Charles campus, 2200 W. Randolph St., St. Charles Mo. The ceremony will also include a parade, led by Emmaus clients, to Good Shepherd United Church of Christ located at 3115 Elm St., St. Charles Mo. with a reception to follow immediately. Built in 1952 the Chapel has long served Emmaus clients, staff, volunteers and family members with weekly worship services and bible study. Emmaus has partnered with Good Shepherd to provide community worship services and bible study for Emmaus clients and is open to the broader community. Emmaus-led services at Good Shepherd are slated to begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 30. 'This is a full circle moment for our congregation,' said Reverend Mauri Peaco, 'Good Shepherd began our worship services at the Emmaus chapel more than 50 years ago. We embrace the Emmaus clients with an extravagant welcome.'


August 25, Environmental Education Seminar, 7-9pm

Many people, from elected officials to the Pope, are speaking out on the scientific and moral imperative to care for our planet and to address climate change. Now is the time to redouble efforts to focus on reducing energy use in all aspects of our lives. With this in mind, the event Make a Bigger Difference: Environmental Action for Your Life, Your Community and Your House of Worship on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 will provide specific tools to take action and make a difference to the environment. September 5-7, Fulk's Shannondale Anniversary Celebration

Thanking everyone for all the donations for Funtime Playground at Shannondale in honor of Jeff and Laurie Fulk. The playground equipment has been purchased and will be delivered and set up on Monday, August 3rd. We are using some "free loan" money until everyone has time to turn in donations and fundraiser money.  

 

Dedication will be held September 6th during the Sunday morning worship service. Everyone is invited. A free picnic lunch of sloppy joes, chips, cookies, etc. will be available. It would be a big help if those planning to be with us for lunch would let us know in advance so we can know how much food to prepare. Lunch reservations (by church or individuals) can be made by email 

cjkramme@att.net or phone (314-603-9024). Only estimated numbers are needed (not names of individuals). A  reminder that all overnights that weekend are free but should be made in advance. Thanks to everyone for your wonderful response in providing Funtime Playground to honor Jeff and Laurie.   

 

September 12, EA Confirmation Retreat

The Eastern Association of the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the United Church of Christ invites all Confirmation students and their adult leaders to a Confirmation Retreat at the Urban Mission Experience (UME) on September 11 and 12. 

 

UME is a partnership of mission agencies and urban churches founded by a group of experienced mission trip leaders in the United Church of Christ.  We are excited to offer the opportunity for youth and leaders to see urban mission work in action. 

September 14-16, Persons in Ministry Retreat (PIM)

 

Theme -  "Church:  Who Needs It - REALLY?" This retreat is for all who seek to renew, reconnect, and reclaim faith. Research indicates that the Church is not dying-only transitioning along with the culture we serve. Are we in midst of another "great awakening?" (Diana Butler Bass) or are we experiencing another "re-formation?" September 15 thru November 10, Financial Peace Seminars, 6:30-8PM      

Register now for the Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University (FPU), offered at St. John's United Church of Christ, 15370 Olive Blvd, Chesterfield, MO  63017.  Seminars begin starting September 15, 2015 and ending November 10, 2015.  Classes will meet each Tuesday 6:30-8:00 PM.  Childcare will be provided.

 

9 week class: Through video teaching, class discussions and small group interactions individuals and couples will learn practical Biblical based money management strategies to get out of debt, make wise financial decisions and save for the future.  The purchase of a financial planning kit is recommended to fully benefit from the program.

These events will be a presentation about the New Beginning assessment process. This event is free, so bring a  team from your church.  New Beginnings might be for you if your congregation can answer "yes" to three or more of the following -  

 

*Less than 70 in worship, or more than 70 in worship but significant decline for a decade *Wrestling with future vision for the church *Significant building issues *Aging membership *Changing neighborhood *Trouble paying bills and/or paying off a loan * Currently in interim time of transition.

Topic:  "The Legacy of the German Evangelical Synod of North America in St. Louis"         

Most St. Louis-area UCC congregations can trace their roots directly to The German Evangelical Synod of North America (1840-1934) or through its successor, the Evangelical and Reformed Church. This presentation will focus on the history and ethos of the Evangelical Synod and its lasting influence in the United Church of Christ. Brief attention will be given to other 19th-century German Protestant traditions active in St. Louis and their relationship to the Evangelical Synod.
