Monday Evenings, "Witnessing Whiteness" Discussion Group at Kirkwood UCC - Begins March 9 through August
Kirkwood UCC will be hosting a 10-session discussion group centering around the book, Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It, by Shelly Tochluk (2nd edition) beginning Monday, March 9th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.
"Witnessing Whiteness" groups are designed for people who identify as white. They work to seed and grow communities of white people who can turn to one another to ask questions about race and racism, reflect on their growing up, and learn how to respectfully interrupt acts of prejudice with empathy and compassion. Many white people have no other white or people of color with whom to talk about race, nor do they have the skills/orientation to do so. So much of the dismantling racism work ahead lies in engaging the very large number of white people who don't yet know they're essential if we are to move forward as a community, metro area, & nation.
This group will meet at Kirkwood UCC on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The 10 sessions will most likely take us through August 10th. We recognize that participants may not be able to make all sessions, but a commitment to make most sessions will be expected.
There is a limit of 25 participants to the group. Please contact Betsy Happel at betsy@kirkwooducc.org, or (314) 822-2240, if you'd like to participate. The book can be ordered through Amazon.com. We hope to have other UCC-ers join us!

Christian faith and practice are centered on the table. This year's convocation speakers and events focus on various dimensions of how growing, eating, and sharing food engage with important theological traditions and issues of social justice.
Eden's annual Spring Convocation is an opportunity for pastors and laypeople to listen to and interact with outstanding biblical and theological scholars. We encourage you to attend and reconnect with friends and colleagues while sharing in the community life of Eden Seminary.
When we focus on food we attend to God's creation, ecology, the equitable distribution of resources, our relationships with one another, the diversity of human culture, and the gamut of human experience from great banquets to famine. Food grounds us in what it means to be God's creatures and reminds us of God's earth and God's provision for us. Food connects us with how we create community, in either just or unjust ways.
