FUTURE EVENTS
Lydia's Ladle

When Jack Straub Jr. first found out about Lydia's Ladle, all he wanted to do was help. Lydia's Ladle, powered by Lydia's House, is a kitchen program that helps "empower and employ women that have been victimized by domestic violence. Through this opportunity, Lydia's Ladle is able to provide Lydia's House residents the opportunity to work in a safe environment free from the abuser, and provides confidentially located employment."

For those of you who aren't aware of either organizations, Lydia's House is located here in Saint Louis, and opened its doors in 1995 to women and children who have fallen victim to domestic violence. Through counseling and guidance, women are able to start their lives over through programs like Lydia's Ladle.

With the help of renowned Chef Lou Rook, III of Annie Gunn's and Pastry Chef Helen Fletcher, a recipe for Chicken Pot Pie was created. These Chicken Pot Pie's are created by the women who are currently being housed at Lydia's House, and now carried at your local Straub's Market.

We are beyond proud to be exclusively carrying Lydia Ladle's Chicken Pot Pie's that help build new futures for these women and children.  All proceeds of the Chicken Pot Pie's goes to supporting Lydia's House.  For more information about Lydia's Ladle, please visit: www.lydiashouse.org

March 3, 10, 17, Science, Religion & Evolving Faith Discussions, 7-8:30pm

You may have heard it asked or have wondered yourself... Can science and faith co-exist? Can you have a scientific mind and also be religious? Does a person of faith have to check his or her mind at the sanctuary doors?

Over the course of three evenings in March we will discuss those well-traveled questions, but we will also move beyond them to contemplate other ideas.  Avery Archer, one of the Samuel UCC members who is working on his PhD at Washington University in astrophysics, will co-lead the study with Pastor Jeff Groene.   We will be using portions of the DVD Series "Painting the Stars".  Each week we will view a short video featuring over a dozen different theologians and progressive thinkers that will serve as the spring board for our own conversation.

Join us at Samuel UCC 320 North Forsyth Blvd Clayton MO 63105.  Email [email protected] or call 314-727-9540 for more information.  We hope you will join us as we investigate the intersection of religion and science.

March 9, Witnessing Whiteness Discussion, 6:30-8:30pm

"Witnessing Whiteness" Discussion Group at Kirkwood UCC - Begins March 9th

Kirkwood UCC will be hosting a 10-session discussion group centering around the book, Witnessing Whiteness: The Need to Talk About Race and How to Do It, by Shelly Tochluk (2nd edition) beginning Monday, March 9th from 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

"Witnessing Whiteness" groups are designed for people who identify as white. They work to seed and grow communities of white people who can turn to one another to ask questions about race and racism, reflect on their growing up, and learn how to respectfully interrupt acts of prejudice with empathy and compassion. Many white people have no other white or people of color with whom to talk about race, nor do they have the skills/orientation to do so.  So much of the dismantling racism work ahead lies in engaging the very large number of white people who don't yet know they're essential if we are to move forward as a community, metro area, & nation.

This group will meet at Kirkwood UCC on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 6:30 - 8:30 pm. The 10 sessions will most likely take us through August 10th. We recognize that participants may not be able to make all sessions, but a commitment to make most sessions will be expected.

There is a limit of 25 participants to the group. Please contact Betsy Happel at [email protected], or (314) 822-2240, if you'd like to participate. The book can be ordered through Amazon.com. We hope to have other UCC-ers join us!

March 11, Speaker Series: Satire & Faith, Should There be Limits?, 7:30-9pm

Samuel UCC is hosting a Speaker Series.  Our first speakers were selected because of the recent killings at Charlie Hebdo, the French satirical magazine, that have been roundly condemned by Islamic leaders in St. Louis and around the world. At the same time, many publications have declined to publish the cartoons deemed offensive to those of the Islamic faith.  How does Islam approach such issues, what explains the different reactions by Muslims, and how do artists respond?

Speakers:  Dr. Ghazala Hayat chairs the Public Affairs Committee of the Islamic Foundation of Greater St. Louis, a non-profit organization established in 1974 that arranges and holds congregational prayers, educational programs and social activities in conformity with the teachings of Islam.

Dan Martin has been an award winning cartoonist, illustrator and designer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for almost 35 years.  In addition to drawing the front page Weatherbird and the Saturday political cartoon, "Postcard from Mound City," his artwork frequently appears on the editorial page and in the feature sections.

Join us at Samuel UCC 320 North Forsyth Blvd Clayton MO 63105.  Email [email protected] or call 314-727-9540 for more information.
