Around Your Conference

Allen's Message to You...

For a child has been born for us, a son given to us; authority rests upon his shoulders; and he shall be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His authority shall grow continually, and there shall be endless peace for the throne of David and his kingdom. He will establish and uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time onward and forever more.

                                                            Isaiah 9:6-7

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

A few days ago I woke in my bed and looked around at the early light. I recognized it as the first light of the morning following the Solstice, the longest night of the year.  It did not seem impressive. It was a cold and cloudy morning, and I thought it seemed unworthy of such a wonderfully significant day. Still I knew that this is a day that holds a promise so profound that people even millennia before the birth of Jesus celebrated it with joy. It is the first day of winter, and, at the same time, a day that is very slightly longer and brighter than the day before, as the earth begins to tip again toward its source of warmth and life.

It isn't accidental that the Christian Church, by long tradition, has chosen this time of year to celebrate the Savior's birth. The capacity for hopefulness in the world's darkest moments is an essential spiritual gift. "The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light," but the light wasn't obvious - it never is. At Christmas time, we celebrate the gift that keeps us in the day of promise, rejoicing as people do when they experience a baby's birth and begin to think what the child's life will become.

May the endless peace that comes with justice live already in our hearts and in our work.

Allen

Allen M. Fluent, Acting Conference Minister

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Invite, 1/25/15

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, January 18-25, 2015, will soon be upon us.  Each year during this time, as Christians deeply committed to Christian unity, we pray in a special way with with Jesus who prayed "that they may be one" (John 17:22).  On Sunday evening, January 25 at 7:00 pm, an ecumenical prayer service will take place at St. Justin Martyr Parish, 11910 Eddie & Park Rd, Sunset Hills, MO.  Fr. Leobardo Alamzan, OP, Prior of St. Dominic Priory, will be the preacher.

The theme for this year's observance is Jesus said to her, "Give me a drink." (John 4:7).  Just as Jesus Himself is crossing cultural, social, political and religious boundaries, we are called by Christ to work toward unity.  This scripture leads us to reflect on how we may be instruments of God's grace for those who seem different or disconnected to us.

If you are interested in attending this service along with our Acting Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. Allen Fluent,  please email Renee our Conference office or call 314-918-2602.  RSVP's are required and requested no later than Friday, January 11th.
More "Black Lives Matter" Banners Available Soon

Our Conference has ordered more banners and they will be delivered the first full week of January.

If you would like to obtain a banner (shown below) to display at your church, please email Renee at the Conference office or call her directly at 314-918-2602.  The banners will once again be shared on a first come, first served basis - one per church, please.

Conference Youth Event (CYE) 2015

The CYE will be held February 14-16, 2015 at Camp Moval, and we hope to see many of our youth attend and participate in this great event.  The theme is "Telling the Tale!".  All youth will have the opportunity to listen to master storyteller, Rev. Ric Zuch, share timeless Biblical stories and lessons as they apply in today's world.  High school youth will become "ear-witnesses" - as they will determine the outcome and how the stories can continue through them!  It will be an exciting time for all attending.

Cost is $120 per person for each youth and adult participant.  Registrations must be postmarked by Monday, January 26, 2015, to ensure space availability and a t-shirt.  If you have any questions prior to the event, please contact Cindy Birkner at 636-946-0961.  You may also contact the Camp MoVal office at 636-583-2730.

Please click here to visit our Conference website for registration materials and further information.  We hope to see many youth attend this fantastic event!

Engaging in Spiritual Practices - to refresh and ground you

Spiritual practice can take many directions including a practice that one engages in every day at the same time, perhaps throughout the day, while walking or doing daily tasks, in silence, or meditation.  There is not a 'one size fits all' for the what, when or how of spiritual practice in one's life.

Tuning the Senses

"O taste and see that the Lord is good" (Ps 34). One vehicle for revelation is our own sensual experiences, and the spiritual practice of "tuning the senses" can open us more fully to God's presence in our everyday lives.

The practice is simple. Take one of the five senses and focus on it for a few minutes. For example, with the sense of smell, close your eyes and breathe deeply. What is there that has gone unnoticed? Perhaps the faint smell of soap, your pet, what remains in the trash. Like emotions, welcome all that you smell without judgment - neither good nor bad, and instead focus on expanding your awareness. Before taking your first sip of coffee, bring the cup to your nose and breathe in deeply a couple of times. When walking in the park, pick up a leaf, crumble it in your hand and inhale what it is offering to you.

Repeat the practice with your other senses. For instance, sit and stare at a framed view out the window, focusing close, then refocusing on the distant. What was always there that you did not notice? Perhaps, the different ways that branches attach to the trunks of trees, the shapes of leaves, the colors in the sky.

God is with us and we are a people incarnating our creator. Let's use our bodily gifts to the fullest to receive what God is offering to us.
