Allen's Message to You...

Thus says the Holy One concerning the prophets who lead my people astray, who cry "Peace" when they have something to eat, but declare war against those who put nothing into their mouths. Therefore it shall be night to you, without vision, and darkness to you, without revelation.

                                                                                          Micah 3:5-6a

Dear Friends and Partners in the Gospel,

Is there anything more unreliable than a prophet with a full stomach? This may be the most significant spiritual dilemma of the American church in our own place and time. It's not just that we're comfortable. In large measure, we live in an environment of insulated comfort that allows us, tempts us, perhaps even presses us, to become anesthetized to the pain and suffering of another humanity, larger than our own, that deals every day with the perils of marginal existence.

Some may object to my use of the phrase "another humanity." "We're all part of one humanity," they say. That's good to remember, but the point is that we are inclined to not remember it in our lives, day by day. In a recent lecture on white privilege at First Congregational Church in Clayton, Southwest Conference Minister John Dorhauer spoke about the strong enculturation of white Americans to view our own ethnicity, behaviors and preferences as the norm, and by implication all other ethnicities, behaviors and preferences as abnormal, alien, or other. This is not a matter of individual bias or prejudice; it's a cultural thing, lodged in the corporate psyche that white Americans share and all Americans share on some level. It is the reason that the violent death of a single white teenager in an American school grips the network news hour for days, while the death of thousands of people of color by starvation or drone attacks in other parts of the world gets only a brief, occasional mention, and the deaths of young people of color on urban streets go virtually unnoticed. This is a moral issue - no, more than that, it is one of the mainstream sources of the great human sorrow afflicting our world today.

Occasionally, the floodgates that have contained the pent-up grief and anger of people too long unnoticed or forgotten begin to break loose and flood our social consciousness. An incident that would have barely made the news a few days earlier becomes a moment of revelation. Unearned privilege and deprivation come out and look at each other, and the painful consequences of inequality and social control are suddenly exposed for everyone to see.

Like many of you, I am saddened by the deep wounds that have been felt over recent months in the City of St Louis. It is time to look deep into the underlying causes of our urban unrest. It is time for sacred conversation.

Thanks to all of you for the work you do to seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly in this day. God bless your ministries of grace.

Allen

Engaging in Spiritual Practices - to refresh and ground you

Spiritual practice can take many directions including a practice that one engages in every day at the same time, perhaps throughout the day, while walking or doing daily tasks, in silence, or meditation.  There is not a 'one size fits all' for the what, when or how of spiritual practice in one's life.

A Way With Words

Writing can be a wonderful spiritual practice. Try keeping a journal. How does one go about it? You might try:

  • a general journal: document your spiritual journey with daily events, prayers, readings, encounters. Reflecting on these
  • a spiritual readings journal: the Bible, a spiritual or devotional book, spiritual ideas you pick up in general reading. Choose an excerpt from your reading and write a response.
  • a prayer journal: copy a prayer that you find or write your own prayers for the day. Pray.
  • a review of the day journal: write about the day, ups and downs, places where you saw God active that day, places where you felt the absence of God. Reflect on this.
  • a journal of letters to God: each day (or weekly) write a letter to God about whatever is on your mind. You might write a letter to yourself from God (or Jesus) after a time of prayer.
  • a creative writing journal: try your hand at poetry or prose. Be creative.
  • a word of the day journal: pick a word from your reading or something you heard, meditate on the word, and use it as the basis for writing

One of the benefits of writing is that you can go back and review. After a month or year looking back can also give you insight into your spiritual journey.

If keeping a journal is not your thing, writing can still be a nice occasional spiritual practice. This is a nice alternate when your regular schedule is changed, for example when traveling.

Gateway ONA Resource Phone Line, 314-690-1435

The mission of Gateway Open and Affirming (ONA) Resource Line is to serve as a resource for all people who seek a spiritual support for LGBTQIA (Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Trangender/Queer or Questioning/Intersexual/Ally) individuals and their families and friends.

What led us to this? - It was brought to our attention that there have been several instances when some individuals were struggling with LGBTQIA situations and had been turned away when seeking guidance and support from their religious institutions. We felt a calling from God to provide a personal and/or anonymous telephone line to support these individuals with resources which would include the extravagant welcome of the United Church of Christ.

The hope is that your congregation will embrace their outreach and include the RESOURCE TELEPHONE NUMBER in your Sunday Bulletins, your website, Facebook page and any other type of publication.  Please click here for an informational flyer.

From the Heritage File

Every church should have a church historian. Why do we want to preserve the history of a church? Here is an excerpt from the UCC Leaders Box about the role of the church historian.  heritage

The church historian collects and arranges the records of the church, sees to their preservation and sums up the church's life from time to time to help give a sense of identity to the church.

Our faith has roots in a past and is lived out in present events. History can teach generations about the action of God in the lives of people. Since before the time of written records, there have been men and women whose responsibility has been to preserve and tell stories of events and people of days gone by. In this recalling of its heritage, the community can recapture its vision and renew its strength. Isaiah advised the people of God to "look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug" (Isaiah 51:1). Over and over in the Bible the people did look to their history. In Hebrews 11 there is a long recital of history. From the days of entrusting everything to memory to today's sophisticated technical equipment, the preservation of the stories has been important.

Watch in future eCourier articles for more information on the role of the church historian or click to read more in the UCC Leader's Box.
