Allen's Message To You

So you, mortal, I have made a sentinel for the house of Israel; whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you shall give them warning from me. If I say to the wicked, "O wicked ones, you shall surely die," and you do not speak to warn the wicked to turn from their ways, the wicked shall die in their iniquity, but their blood I will require at your hands.

                                                            Ezekiel 33:7-8

If another member of the church sins against you, go and point out the fault...

                                                            Matthew 18:15

Dear friends and partners in the Gospel,

The Scriptures for this Sunday present a special challenge. They talk about things we don't want to think about and tell us to do things about them that we don't want to do.

The passage from Ezekiel is about warning people about the consequences of their actions when they don't want to hear it. Not a few of us know what that feels like. In Matthew's Gospel, we read Jesus' advice to us when people have caused us harm. Tell them so, says Jesus, and if they don't believe you, tell them again with witnesses, and when all of that fails to convince them, tell the church. Who do you know who wants to do that?

What these passages have in common is a kind of direct, confrontational honesty - a telling of the truth, in a spirit that thinks of truth as something essential. Why does telling the truth (not just knowing it but saying it) have that kind of urgency? It is because it is God's truth.

Christians are people who choose to live into God's imminent Realm of Justice, Peace and covenant compassion - to live there even when it is only still a promise. The truths of God's Realm are not yet safe in the world as it is, because the world is not yet ready to abide in them; but our comfort is in the peace we find in the Holy Realm that is to be. It's what our Christian freedom is about.

The Sundays of fall begin to move us, in the Scripture readings, toward consideration of the Realm of God, and how it summons us to a life of honesty and commitment. "for salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light." (Romans 13:11b-12)

God bless the ministries you do in the Spirit of God's grace.

Persons In Ministry (PIM) Retreat 2014

"Who Do You Say That I Am? Really?" is the theme for this year's Persons in Ministry Retreat on September 15-17, 2014, at the Resort at Port Arrowhead in Lake of the Ozarks, MO. The presenters are the Rev. Dani Loving Cartwright, former DOC Regional Minister; and the Rev. Holly MillerShank, Team Leader of Ministerial Excellence, Support and Authorization (MESA) with the UCC. Our time together will explore themes of authenticity and vulnerability in ministry.

Here's what Rev. Carole Barner, pastor at Mt. Tabor and Grace UCC, has to say about PIM - "An annual gathering away from our places of called ministry which offers renewal, time of learning and conversation about new ministry aspects, and playfulness with our colleagues in both the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the UCC and the Mid-America Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Besides all that, this gathering offers room for the Spirit to dance with us and to invite us into greater collaborative efforts for sharing the Good News of Christ. How might our various gifts truly build up the Body of Christ? Who in your area might be serving Christ in ways that your place of ministry could participate? Where is God present, and how do we join into God's Dream for all God's children? I am looking forward to new connections, new inspiration, new collaboration to be born.I hope to see you there!"

There is another great reason to attend this year's gathering: participants will be able to use this as fulfillment of the required boundary training! If you have completed the "basic course," then this retreat will count toward the every three-year required course.

To read more about PIM, register, and to see the brochure/schedule, please visit our Conference website.  All room reservations are to be made directly with the Resort by calling 800-532-3575.  Registration deadline is Monday, September 8th - please be respectful of this date.

Monthly Health and Wellness Tip Sheet - September

If you had a choice and could either age well, enjoying your golden years with energy and vigor, free from disability and illness or age poorly, and be straddled with health issues that keep you from fully living your later years - which would you choose? You actually have a choice or at least choosing the strategies that keep you healthy and aging well. This month Deaconess Faith Community Nurse Ministries focuses on positive aspects of growing older and encouraging positive aspects of one's health - physically, socially, mentally and spiritually, We invite you to join in Healthy Aging Month by learning and beginning practicing four key strategies that research has demonstrated to lower the risk of disability, chronic illness and mental health problems.

The first strategy is focused on not smoking or chewing tobacco products. Research has consistently demonstrated that smoking tobacco enhances one's risk for cancer, cardiovascular and lung disease. Chewing tobacco has been linked to mouth and throat cancer. Faith community nurses work with individuals in providing referral access and support to smoking cessation programs. Stopping the use of tobacco can add years and quality of life to the years that are to come.

The second strategy is... Click here to continue article.

A Mission Article -  Caminando con Guatemala (Walking with Guatemala)

The walk began when 8 women from Kirkwood UCC traveled to Guatemala in the summer of 2012.  They went for the purpose of learning - learning about the country of Guatemala, listening to the stories of the people and hoping to find a way to "do mission" in Guatemala.

In discussions with Judith Castaneda, General Coordinator for CEDEPCA (www.cedepca.us)-- the organization which hosted the women--the KUCC group learned about being partners in mission.  They also learned that, while CEDEPCA has many groups from North American interested in visiting, they only have a few staff members who have the English language skills and understanding of North American culture to serve as guides for these groups.  This sparked an idea for partnership in mission - the idea that KUCC could provide opportunities for CEDEPCA staff members to be immersed in the culture and language of North America.  After numerous e-mails and Skype conversations, a plan for the partnership developed.

From October 2-9, 2013, Judith and two of her colleagues spent a week in St. Louis, helping plan a 5-6 week  immersion experience for two CEDEPCA staff members (tentatively scheduled for fall of 2014).  In addition to planning the immersion experience, Judith and her colleagues visited organizations and met with people in St. Louis that do work similar to that done by CEDEPCA (seminary education,  responding to natural disasters, working with immigration issues).  There were also opportunities for them to learn about St. Louis and share their Guatemala experiences with KUCC.

Two CEDEPCA staff members (Ana and Luis) will be arriving in early October for a month long immersion experience. The objectives for the CEDEPCA visitors will include:

1. Disaster Relief Response - to understand how to work with diverse groups and train them to work together and to develop strategies for providing support for those serving in crisis zones.

2. Cross Cultural - to understand how to deal with diverse populations in harmony, to learn the cultural context of our town, visit KUCC families and see the diversity in family make-ups, and share information about their culture with KUCC and others.

3. Language - to increase their understanding and proficiency in the English language. Both Ana and Luis speak basic English but are eager to improve their skills through this immersion experience.

Joplin Mission Station Closing Ceremony

On May 22, 2011 a devastating tornado struck Joplin, Missouri. In its path was unimaginable death and destruction. Almost immediately, the church was present to work with the recovery and rebuilding of the city.

The United Church of Christ, in partnership with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), opened "The Mission

From l-r; Rev. Josh Baird, Exec. Dir. - DOC "Week of Compassion; Rev. Zach Wogemuth, Exec. for UCC Disaster Ministries; Rev. Kathryn Wilson, Minister of Mission and Outreach - South Joplin Christian Church.

Station" in the spring of 2012. Adjacent to South Joplin Christian Church was an old Quonset hut used for storage by the church. The church building sustained major damage; the unseemly Quonset hut was unscathed.

The building was transformed into "The Mission Station" through $25,000 from the UCC "One Great Hour of Sharing" and Disaster Relief Ministries, along with a $25,000 contribution from the DOC "Week of Compassion."

In the 2 ½ years of operation, The Mission Station hosted more than 1,450 volunteers from 23 states.   These volunteers worked more than 51,000 hours in disaster relief and re-building Joplin. The Mission Station was a remarkable ministry in partnership and service.

The Mission Station was officially closed during a service of celebration Sunday, August 25. It was an emotional time, remembering and celebrating the mission work accomplished. More than 100 people attended the event. In a litany written by the Rev. Jill Cameron Michel, pastor of South Joplin Christian Church when the tornado struck, there was the recognition that God will continue to call and challenge us in disaster-related ministries.

St. Louis Forum on UCC Marriage Equality Suit - 10/26/14

On April 28, 2014, the General Synod of the United Church of Christ filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Charlotte, North Carolina, challenging the Constitutionality of that state's punitive marriage laws. North Carolina law not only limits "legal" marriages to those between a man and a woman, but also makes it a Class 1 misdemeanor for a clergyperson to perform a marriage ceremony for any couple that has not obtained a valid state license, which, of course, will not be issued to same sex couples. A Class 1 misdemeanor is punishable by up to 120 days in jail and/or probation and community service. In addition, North Carolina law authorizes anyone to sue the clergyperson who performs a religious marriage for a couple without a valid state license and sets damages at $200 if they prevail.

Believing these laws to be a clear violation of the US Constitution as well as inconsistent with the General Synod Resolution on "Equal Marriage Rights for All", the national setting of the UCC authorized this unprecedented action.

Because of the historic significance of a lawsuit brought by a mainline denomination against a State, the Missouri Mid-South Conference, the Illinois South Conference and The First Congregational Church of St. Louis have invited Mr. Donald C. Clark, Jr., General Counsel of the United Church of Christ, to be in St. Louis on Sunday afternoon, October 26, 2014. Mr. Clark will present additional information, perspective and analysis regarding the lawsuit and answer questions. The forum will take place in the sanctuary of The First Congregational Church of St. Louis, beginning at 3pm and conclude no later than 5pm, with a reception following in the church's fellowship hall.

Mark your calendars and plan to attend what promises to be a very interesting, informative and spirit filled discussion relating to this prophetic action. No RSVP is necessary but would be appreciated in order to plan appropriately for the event. You may call the church office at 314-721-5060 or send an e-mail message to office@firstcongregational.org.

You may also contact me if you have questions prior to the event.
