September 21, Book Discussion/Event, 6:30pm

"Reading Changes Lives", the United Church of Christ's all-church literacy initiative that starts in Fall 2014, acknowledges that literacy is essential to end the cycle of poverty, to close the school-to-prison pipeline, and to create inclusive, healthy communities where all can be active and advocate for themselves.

Kirkwood UCC will be participating in this literacy campaign by participating in "One Read", an all-church read of the inspirational book: Hot Dogs and Hamburgers: Unlocking Life's Potential by Inspiring Literacy at Any Age by Rob Shindler. In this heartwarming story, the author tells how he offered his time, unflagging energy, and unconventional teaching techniques to help a boy with serious learning differences and adults suffering from low literacy levels. He learned firsthand how ridiculous the common misconceptions are about learning disabilities and adult illiteracy. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers demonstrates that literacy issues reside in all neighborhoods and that its victims are committed to finding dignity and life's possibilities through learning to read.  A discussion of the book will be held on Sunday, Sept. 21st at 6:30 PM in the Adult Education room. A limited number of books are available for purchase from Donna in the KUCC office for $10 each. The book is also available in paperback or e-book at online book retailers.
