Allen's Message To You

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea.

                                                            Psalm 46:1-3

To those who await Christ's rising,

I looked outside my door a day ago, and I saw some blossoms newly-formed on a tree in my yard as they begin to wilt and drop to the ground.  They were victims of a sudden frost that came in an unexpected moment, and that is now already gone.  It reminded me that life's great passionate outbursts are forever in peril; still, in the fullness of their bloom, we would not be without them.

We creatures of God were not made to be still.  The joys of life are defined by movement.  But to move requires courage, when the mountains shake, and when change begets fear and the anguish of loss.  Was it so for those who followed Jesus, too?

Our psalm for Holy Week this year, seems to sense the edge on our modern lives as we notice the shifting places where we used to stand and do so now only with care.  "The earth does change," we think, and we may be developing a mild case of vertigo as it slips by beneath us day by day.

Yet what a trick of faith this is!  We know the crucifixion comes.  It is one side of truth.  We don't deny it (even God does not deny it).  But the other side is God.

Be still, and know that I am God.

            Psalm 46:10

Joyful worship, Blessed Easter to you all.

Confirmation Creed

St Martin's UCC in Dittmer, MO invites teens to join a school-year-long confirmation class.

The confirmation year is divided into three sections focusing on learning about, studying and interpreting scripture; church history and organization; and choosing a memory verse and a mentor from the congregation.

Engaging with a mentor helps the confirmands develop a comfort level with articulating their faith. During the year the students search the scriptures (using an online concordance to make it more fun) for images and metaphors about God, eg. father, shepherd, potter, mother hen, etc. and studied the "I Am" statements in the Gospel of John, watched the DVD Bible Mini-Series and much more.  The students also participated with a cluster of other congregations in monthly field trips like the Taste of Home fundraiser for Emmaus, touring the Roman Catholic Basilica in St. Louis city, and attendinag a Bat Mitzvah, etc.

The conclusion of the process is the writing of their own creed as a group, which is shared with the congregation on the day of their confirmation. The students formulated their creed by responding to five questions: Who is God? Who is Jesus? Who is the Holy Spirit? What is the Church? and Who am I? A portion of the completed creed appears below:

We believe in a loving God, the Creator who is like a potter molding humankind into God's own image.

Jesus called this God His 'Father' and the Bible also tells us to think of God as a loving Mother who protects her children.  God is a light to the faithful leading those who will follow and calming all of our fears of darkness.

Our God is like a consuming fire spreading the light and warmth of God's love wherever it goes.

We believe in Jesus the Son of God.

He is like bread for the hungry;

light for the blind;

a gate which both keeps out and lets in what is good for us; ...

If you would like to learn more or see the rest of the creed, contact St Martin's at geristmc@hughes.net

Vision Team Update - Vision Forward!

Ten members of your Missouri Mid-South Conference Vision Team met on April 6 with ACM Allen Fluent, Jan Aerie, Minister of Strategic Innovation, vision and consulting partner, Dr. Dick Hamm.  After opening worship, the team reviewed a preliminary contextual analysis of history and trends in our conference, mapped ways of ministry connections within and between cluster and mission groupings, heard a summary of findings from listening sessions held at congregations and at the Conference Youth Event, and began studying a possible paradigm for wider ministry in the future.  Affirmations were given that much of how we minister for and among each other already embodies a model of mutuality and the pooling of strengths - marks of a vibrant future.

Our work, however, is just getting traction.  We solicit your input on helping us map our "Conference's future story."  Four (4) listening sessions hosted by Vision Team members will be taking place throughout our Conference in May, and we will share the dates and locations with you once they are confirmed.  We are looking into the possible of a Web-based forum for those unable to make either of the sessions.

After the sessions, a preliminary report will be made at our Conference Annual Gathering with a follow-up forum.  We look forward to working with the Designated Conference Minister search team and the named minister for future collaboration on journeying together in fruitful and sustainable ways.

In Christ's service,

Rev. Dr. Paul Koch, Vision Team Chair

A Peacemaking Practice

There are times in each day when we are in need of an expression, word, prayer or touch of peace. In those moments it is sometimes the hardest thing to do. This monthly article is a new offering of information, tips, contacts and tools for making peace in our lives.

Creating Resolution

Sometimes we find ourselves in conflicts with others and we just give up.  We think, "This is too hard, the other won't change, I can't fix this."

But other times we decide that the relationship and the issues are just too important to give up on.  We decide to engage the other, the one with whom we find ourselves in conflict, in a conversation.

When the other cares about us as well, is aware of the problem and interested in repairing it, and engages in the conversation we find that we can actually hear the other's point of view.  We don't agree.  We each have our own perspective.  But we come to understand how the other came to see things the way they do and we are able to state our opinion such that they get us as well.

Out of this we find there are certain things we both need.  We don't have to see things in the same way to work together to create what we both need.  We have an agreement.  We each make commitments to create the common good.

And when we do this, we discover that the relationship is even stronger than it was before we became aware of the conflict.

The crux of the matter, the cross, is whether we decide to not give up but to address the issue.  This rests on our confidence in our competence when it comes to the resolution of conflict.  If you want to build your confidence, join us in the Peacemaker Fellowship.

Signs of Hope

My mother died of cancer in mid October the year I was 37. She died on a day when the weather was its most glorious - azure blue sky and the brightest imaginable colored maple trees. We commented it was a day she would have loved. She loved and took time to appreciate all of nature, but especially the birds. The following Easter I desperately wanted to sense my mother's spirit in some way on that day - it was after all a day of hope, new life and signs of spring.

But in our northern Berkshire Massachusetts town it was anything but spring - snow lay a foot deep on the ground, and it was still cold and windy - especially at dawn when we were standing on a hilltop for the sunrise service. All during that service I looked and hoped for something. Just as the last hymn, "Christ the Lord is Risen Today" was concluding, a bird high up in the branches of a bare tree behind us sang out stridently and beautifully. It was a cardinal - my mother's favorite bird and her symbol of hope all during her illness.

We as a Conference family have been looking for and finding signs of spring awakenings and hopeful new life. Clergy and lay cluster groups hampered by winter weather are glad to be together again. The three Associations have planned uplifting programs for their spring meetings; the Vision Team and Search Committee are hard at work; Conference committees are revitalizing their membership to activate special interest projects; and our camps, MoVal and Shannondale are nearly ready for their summer campers. Just as our outlook shifts when we see signs of spring, there is a palpable sense of renewal and hope in the Conference.

Where have you sensed new hope and renewal this spring?

I wish you signs of new life and uplifting hope this Easter.

Resurrection Miracles

Our senses embrace the resurrection of life all around us each spring. Sometimes we may assume it occurs null simply, yet when we take a moment to think, we realize it is only through great effort and miraculous providence that a rising to new life happens. Like our giving - strong and steady which has enabled these new life miracles:

The financial picture and giving in our Conference was seriously declining two years ago, as well as just one year ago, but now numbers are rising and our Conference's financial picture is much more positive.

Some Covenanted Ministries of the Conference have foundered, but there is revitalization occurring with a reconstituting of mission/interest group activity.

Visiting missionaries Anil and Teresa Henry tell of the Christian Hospital in Mungeli, India where the doors were about to close a decade ago, and now 30,000 patients are served annually.
