January 5-26, Adult Education Series:  Issues of Life and Death, 10:45 am - 11:45 am

 

Guest speakers will discuss healthcare choices, difficult end-of-life questions, hospice care, burial options, and medical ethics, living abundantly and aging gracefully at Kirkwood United Church of Christ, 1603 Dougherty Ferry Rd., 63122, every Sunday from 10:45-11:45 a.m. during January starting Jan. 5 and ending Jan. 26. Topics and speakers will include: 1/5: "The Art of Dying", by Dr. Buettner, Ethicist, St. Luke's Hospital. 1/12: "Burial Options", by Mr. Richard Lay, Bellefontaine Cemetery. 1/19: "All about Hospice", by Helen Cassidy, Director of Mercy Hospice. 1/26: "Aging Vibrantly", by Gayle McHenry, Executive Director, Shepherd's Center.  Childcare arrangements can be made by calling the church office:  314-822-2240.

January 20, St. Charles Ministerial Alliance Blood Drive, 11 am - 5 pm

Please give blood in the St. Charles area on 1/20.  The Red Cross is hoping to collect 70 pints that day since they are extremely low on supply.  Frieden's UCC in St. Charles alerted us to this need. Event flyer.

January 25, Post Holiday Retreat, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

 

Thinking ahead, why not treat yourself or give the gift of some midwinter reflection time and renewal for the New Year? We are offering a one day retreat "Rest for your soul" at beautiful Mercy Center.  ($50/person  10% discount if early registration) Would you be interested? We have the opportunity to gather on Jan 25 from 8:30 until 4:30. Please reply by December 30 and let us know if you will be able to join us. January 26, St. Lucas Preschool Open House & Art Attack, 2 pm 

 

St. Lucas Preschool (St. Lucas UCC Church) 11735 Denny Rd, Sunset Hills, MO 63126, is hosting an Open House and Art Attack on Sunday, January 26, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.  This event is an opportunity for current and potential students to try various types of "free art" forms while interacting with our staff, touring our classrooms and learning about our programs.  All are invited to bring their preschool aged children to this fun event; please pass on this information to anyone who may have an interest.  No reservations are required. January 26, OUTSpoken KC: Love and Marriage Performance, 6:30 pm

Peace Christian Church UCC invites you to attend an encore performance of  "OUTSpoken KC: Love and Marriage", a performance of true stories from Kansas City's LGBT Community.    

Sunday, January 26th, at 6:30 pm, Peace Christian Church UCC Downtown Campus, 1801 McGee (AIA Building).  This one-night only encore performance uncovers the wildly diverse experiences of love, marriage, and life from Kansas City's LGBT community, such as a gay immigrant's political asylum in Brookside, a lesbian couple's encounter with the racial politics of separatist Womyntown, and a Parkville trans woman's hilarious observations on a first date.  Event flyer.

January 26, Book Discussion: "Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of  Boundless Compassion, by Gregory Boyle, 6:30 pm - 8 pm  

At Kirkwood United Church of Christ, 1603 Dougherty Ferry Road,  63122. Homeboy Industries is one of the ministries that Kirkwood United Church of Christ Pastor Betsy Happel has the KUCC Faith Formation Class visit when they take their summer trip to California. The book is easily ordered online and is available in paperback or e-reader. Participants should read the entire book and be ready to discuss it. Keith & Elaine Stanley, KUCC youth leaders who have been to Homeboy Industries, will lead this discussion.

January/February, West Coast Swing Dance Lessons, 7 pm

February 3, Tai Chi, 10 am 

Looking for an opportunity to get "fit" in the new year?  Calvary United church of Christ, 2501 Hartland Avenue, will begin a new session of Tai Chi on Monday, February 3rd.  This session will meet on Monday mornings from 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. in our Great Hall and continue for ten weeks, ending on April 7th.  Cost for this ten week session is $30.00.  For information or to register, call 314-429-7464.

February 12, Sacred Conversations on Solomon's Porch, 9 am  - 2 pm

Christ the King UCC is hosting several conversations throughout the year.  The first with Kirk Byron Jones, PhD Wednesday, February 12, 2014 9:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Rest In The Storm: Self-Care Strategies for Clergy.  The author of several best-selling books, Kirk Byron Jones has been a pastor and seminary professor for over 30 years. Currently serving as an adjunct professor at Andover Newton Theological School, he extends his teaching ministry by leading workshops and seminars around the country. May 18, Friends of Emmaus Festival and Quilt Auction, Noon - 5 pm

Friends of Emmaus Festival and Quilt Auction.  Emmaus Homes in Marthasville, MO will hold their Spring Festival.  40 years as a Fall Bazaar : now the third year as an "Ole Time Country Family Picnic" and famous Quilt Auction on SUNDAY MAY 18 2014 from noon to 5:00 p.m. Dinner served from noon to 4:00.   Outdoor food venders. Flea market;silent auction;Children's games and play area: Crafts"homemade ice cream:all kinds of booths. Our faithful quilters are aging and we are in need of a few new groups to keep this dedicated tradition going for the benefit of our special residents that  live at Emmaus in safety and harmony.
