Allen's Message to You
Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees. Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "be strong, do not fear! Here is your God.
Isaiah 35:4
To the Churches that have supported our work together this year:

In this busy Advent and Christmas Season, I want to take a moment to remember you, because you have been faithful in difficult times and because your efforts are making possible an abundance of good works and ministries that can already be seen breaking forth among us.
Exuberant thanks for your faithfulness to the ministry we share in the fellowship of Jesus Christ! Thank you for representing the mission we all share through your own local acts and expressions of faith in your neighborhood of service. More than anywhere, the ministry of our local congregations shows our neighbors who the UCC is and what unites us as a church. Thanks too for sharing the gifted leaders and workers who are called from your congregations throughout the year into leadership in our Conference and its Associations. And finally, thank you for your financial support for Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM), which is the sole support for the work done in the Conference office, wider church and Global Ministries of the United Church of Christ.
These past three months, I have been in conversation with many people in the churches of our Conference. I have heard about many good things we are doing, I've also heard about issues that have challenged us to re-discover our common sense of mission as a people of the Gospel. Some have talked about broken relationships of trust, some about regional differences and disparities, some about issues of justice, and some about issues of faith. Among them, there were a few angry voices, but mostly I heard a longing to re-ignite the kind of unity we find within a family, where differences persist but the desire for fellowship in Christ's love is greater than anything that can ever separate us.
And so, I'm feeling thankful for you today, because the faithfulness that lives within this Conference is powerfully strong, and the witness we bear is greatly needed. Please pray for a growing unity among us, for growing trust in one another, and for support of our common work as partners in the Gospel. In the past few years, we've had some difficult days. The road ahead will surely be challenging, but the possibilities are limitless. We greatly need the support of every one of you to help us provide the resources we need to care for one another and engage in a common work of ministry together.
May Christmas blessings fill your hearts.
Allen

Haste, Haste
Have you noticed that soon after Thanksgiving each year, as the autumn days shorten, people seem to increase their speed - walking, driving or even talking? It may be because it is getting colder outside and we want to stay warm, or that less daylight causes us to have less time to do as much, but I theorize that it is something else. Our culture seems to push us to move faster in order to cram in as much Christmas shopping, decorating and food preparation as we possibly can before December 24. By ten days before Christmas, almost everyone I speak with can't help but exclaim, "There is not enough time in the day to get everything done for Christmas!"
I get caught up in this too, but when I recall the most memorable moments of Advent they are the quiet times when serenity crept in - even for a few moments, when my fast pace and rushing mind slowed for a bit. Church services, singing carols, serving a meal to the homeless or visiting shut ins can do this. Even sitting down for a cup of tea in the midst of a hectic day slows the pace.
I have had conversations with some people who have been wishing the conference would move faster, and change sooner to show a new way and offer different options. While we are conscious to make change happen in good form, we are ready for some implementation. Early in 2014 the conference will be seeking names to create lists of people with gifts to offer the conference - not so much the financial ones, though those are needed too, but the gifts of expertise and knowledge. We will invite names of people by areas of ability and interest, then connect those with the ability to those with the need. Contemplate your gifts as you wrap your Christmas gifts for your family, then watch for our invitation early in the New Year.
The carol, What Child is This, has the phrase, "Haste, haste to bring Him laud, the babe, the Son of Mary". May our rushing and hectic pace be devoted to bringing praise and honor to the newborn Christ child, our Savior. May you experience a serene Christmas.

This is the church for which we strive, the church of the warm heart, the open mind, the adventurous spirit;
A church that cares, that heals hurt lives, that comforts old people, that challenges youth, that knows no division of culture or class, no frontiers, geographical or social
A church that interprets the truth in terms of truth A church of the people, high as the ideals of Jesus, low as the humblest human
A working church, a worshipping church, A church that inspires courage for this life and hope for the world to come;

Get Real, Finding Your True Self in Jesus at Camp Moval
The 2014 Outdoor Ministry theme is "Get Real, Finding Your True Self in Jesus." Campers and participants will explore the teachings of Jesus and how Jesus himself is a role model and what it means to be a true friend. Please see the Outdoor Ministry Program Schedule - use it to plan your summer and how you would like to spend this upcoming summer at Camp MoVal.
The camp brochure will be mailed to campers and churches in mid-January and registration will start February 1. Please do not forget about our new age group bracketing and age relevance for attending programs. Starting in 2014, grade level requirement will be the grade campers are going into. We know that for many years this has been a confusing issue and we want to use standard approach to grade levels. There will also be a transition in the summer of 2014 for high school seniors as we create new programs for college students and young adults.
Also, do not forget that Camp MoVal will be going through the accreditation process with the American Camp Association during the summer of 2014. Camp MoVal is also looking for a variety of qualified staff to fill its summer camp staff positions. If interested or need more information, please contact Jeremy Force, Outdoor Ministry Director.
There are still some available dates if you would like to have someone from Camp MoVal come and share with your church, cluster or association. If you would like to schedule a visit or have any questions, please call the camp office 636-583-2730. You can also find us on the web at www.campmoval.org or follow us on Facebook.

Miraculous Birth
Newborns draw our attention especially around Christmas time - they remind us of the Christ Child. Newly-born ideas and projects are also especially poignant this time of year when they bring hope and healing. New miracles are birthed in December with Our Church's Wider Mission (OCWM) giving:
- A newly initiated free dinner for people in need not only brings large numbers and special conversations around the meal, but new worshipers to advent services.
- An Egyptian mother has long dreamed of opening a small store supplying staples for her community. She has received a micro-loan and her store is now open. Sales allow her to send her daughter to school.
- A recently widowed member has found solace in grief counseling and a Blue Christmas worship service.
Celebrate the miraculous births you have enabled through your generosity.
Our Church Works Miracles!
OCWM: creating miracles every day.
