On Sunday, October 6, 2103, 100+ people from 10 churches in our community gathered at Buschmann Park for the 37th annual CROP Walk event.  (CROP:  Communities Responding to Overcome Hunger.)  The CROP Walk event has been held each year in Owensville since 1976, to raise awareness of issues relating to hunger around the world.  Churches of many denominations gather together to support this event, raising funds that are distributed through Church World Services to relief organizations around the world.  This year, $9038.50 has been raised so far to address these needs; the community goal was $10,000.

Sadie and Hulda rocking it at the CROP Walk.

This event, which is sponsored by the Owensville/Rosebud Ministerial Alliance, began in 1976 as a ten-mile walk.  Church members in the community would gather in Owensville, and walk ten miles south on Highway EE, then east on Bem Church Road to St. John's, Bem United Church of Christ.  They would be treated to refreshments at the church, then ferried back to town in stock trucks.  Today, the route is a bit simpler; CROP Walkers gather at Bushmann Park and walk a one-mile circuit through the city streets, ending back at the park for refreshments.  (Those unable to walk are invited to 'rock' instead at the pavilion; rocking chairs are provided.)  The walk generates funds for Church World Services, raises awareness about issues of hunger around the world, and promotes fellowship and mission work among participating churches.  Together, they work to make a greater impact on the world than they could possibly do alone.  This event is held annually on the first Sunday of October, to celebrate World Communion Sunday.
