Around Your Conference

Notes From Davida...

davida zip
Look, up in the air - It's a bird, it's a plane, it's our Acting Conference Minister, Super Davida!

This past weekend, I took a few days off (!) and visited Pere Marquette State Park in Illinois.  I didn't take my laptop and there was no cell signal, so I was truly "away".  I read 2 ½ books, slept twelve hours each night, hiked about 6.5 miles in the hills of the park, swam, and....wait for it... TA DA! finally did a zipline!

The zipline came sandwiched between the Saturday and Sunday hikes, so I was struck by how different the forest looks from 250' up.  Oh, I've seen forests from above, but this was a bit more intimate than an airplane.  One's view of the forest changes, of course.  And there was no lingering as there can be on the ground.  Indeed, were one to linger on a zipline, the only way onward would be by one's own muscle power, hand over hand pulling one's self along the cable until reaching the nearest platform.  And then one looks around, gets untethered from one cable and moves over to the next leg of the zipline.  This one had nine zips covering almost two miles.

In some ways, I've been on a zipline with you these three months.  I've been moving fast, learning as much as I can as quickly as possible.  I've been going in many directions, zipping back and forth across this huge territory and still not making it to Memphis or Arkansas or many of the outlying churches, to my chagrin.  I've been zooming above your surface, dropping in for a quick indepth exposure in a sampling of places.  It's fascinating perspective, and it has its illusions.  I could believe that I know you, but that would definitely be an illusion.  I could believe that I've figured out where you need to go, but that too would be an illusion.  Instead, I prefer to test things with you, to see whether any of my observations make sense to you.  Sometimes I hold up a mirror and ask what the mirror is telling you about yourselves.  Once in a while, I'll weigh in with some advice about what seems healthy and appropriate from my perspective.

fungi view And it is all about perspective.  On the ground, I took photos of fungi growing on a "mother log", and atop McAdams Peak, I took wide vistas.  From the air, I took no photos except those locked in my mind: impressions of valleys and lush landscape and hills, the whoosh of fast air, the brilliance of the sky.

Sometimes we need to catch a vision from a distance in order truly to see the patterns of life.  As churches and authorized ministers, stepping back and apart from our everyday ways is crucial.  Without that perspective, it's all too easy to misfile the past into the future, to keep doing things the way we've been doing them because they used to succeed.  With a new perspective, we often find ourselves refreshed for yet more faithful ministry and mission.

Now some have responded to my news of ziplining by telling me how brave I am.  Nope. I just don't want to stagnate.  New experiences are the stuff of life.  Growth requires risk.  Joy is integral to full engagement with life.  And so I ask: What would it be like if every church saw itself as a laboratory for experimentation, including permission to fail (since that is important to learning)?  What would happen if every church's leaders went to Shannondale on a canoe/kayak trip or to Mo-Val for the ropes course (including the 400' zipline!)? How might you invent a way to gain a new perspective on your congregational life?  It works for individuals too, as it did for me last weekend!

Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree

Acting Conference Minister

Thank You and Goodbye to our Davida goodbye

Goodbyes are as much a part of life as the seasons of the year.

The story of gain and loss, of joy and sorrow, of life and death, of union and separation, is inside each one of us. . .

The word goodbye-originally "God-be-with-ye" or "Go with God"- was a recognition that God was a significant part of the going. ~ Joyce Rupp in "Praying our Goodbyes."

Although it comes far too soon for many of us, it is time to say farewell, goodbye, "God be with you" to our Acting Conference Minister, Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree.  Davida has been a most significant part of our life together in the Missouri Mid-South Conference since she came to us from Connecticut in late May.  We have been blessed, enriched, challenged, and strengthened by her pastoral presence, wisdom and encouragement.

All in the Conference are invited in a time of leave-taking and celebration of Davida's altogether-too-short ministry in our midst.  Please place the date on your calendar:

Saturday, September 7th

2:00 to 4:00 pm

Columbia United Church of Christ, 3201 I-70 Dr. NW, Columbia, MO 65202

On behalf of the Conference Council, we hope that you will be able to join us and be present!  If you are unable to attend, expressions of appreciation and well wishes may be sent to the Conference Office to be shared with Davida on September 7th.

Festival of Sharing  Festival of Sharing

The third Saturday of October is the day that people of faith, from many different denominations all over the state, gather at the Missouri State Fairgrounds, in Sedalia. The groups and families bring money that has been raised and "kits" that have been assembled during the year. Volunteers help to sack rice, beans and potatoes for distribution to Missouri agencies. In the afternoon state agencies bring their trucks and trailers to receive the kits, rice, beans and potatoes to distribute to their clients. Kits, assembled for Church World Service, are loaded on a semi truck to continue their journey to other parts of the world.

Visit their website to see how you, your church or workplace might contribute.  Also take a moment to click on the Donate button and see the many different organizations that need our help, such as The Rainbow Network, Patch, Foods Resource Bank, Bread for the World and more.  Start a challenge at your church or office.  Be a leader, be the difference, change begins with you!

All MMSUCC and Mid-America Region clergy are welcome.  If you are a lay person, please encourage your church to send your pastor to this worthwhile annual event.  It not only promotes spirituality, but also contributes to our continued partnership with the Disciples of Christ.

The theme of the retreat is "Honest to God Prayer: Being Still while in Motion" and will be led by Kent Ira Groff. Kent is a spiritual companion for journeyers and leaders, a retreat director and a writer poet living in Denver, Colorado. Honest to God Prayer is his tenth and newest book. Dr. Groff is founding mentor of Oasis Ministries for Spiritual Development, Camp Hill, Pa. With experience as a pastor of congregations, a chaplain, and a seminary teacher, he describes his work as one beggar showing other beggars where to find bread.

The annual PIM retreat is a fabulous place to relax, renew and rejuvenate your mind, body and soul.

FEMA Guide for Developing Emergency Operations Plan for Houses of Worship   FEMA

Does your church have an emergency plan in place for an earthquake, tornado or fire?  Would your church know the proper steps to take if a shooter entered the building?  What if a bomb threat occurred during worship?  While these may not be pleasant topics of conversation, they are topics which need to be discussed and are part of our reality in 2013.

On June 18, the White House released guides for developing high-quality emergency operations plans for schools, institutions of higher education (IHEs) and Houses of Worship. These guides align and build upon years of emergency planning work by the Federal government and are the first joint product of DHS, DOJ, ED and HHS on this critical topic. The guides are customized to each type of community, incorporate lessons learned from recent incidents, and respond to the needs and concerns voiced by stakeholders following the recent shootings in Newtown and Oak Creek and the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. Schools, IHEs and Houses of Worship can use them to create new plans as well as to revise and update existing plans and align their emergency planning practices with those at the national, state, and local levels.  Click here for the 38-page booklet, which outlines steps to implement various emergency methods.

The Little Free Library at Grace UCC, St. Louis   little library

The Sunday school class at Grace United Church of Christ in St. Louis  has just opened a Little Free Library in front of their building. It is a little structure (30x22 inches) that houses books for every age to be borrowed by anyone in the neighborhood. The Little Free Library is a movement that was started in Wisconsin to strengthen neighborhood connections and promote literacy.

There are currently Little Free Libraries all over the world. The idea is that people can take books and return them or pass them on to friends, and add books they would like to share. It can get people to meet their neighbors and share ideas. You can check out the website at littlefreelibrary.org.  They have registered and sent their information to the organization and will soon be added to the world wide map.

kids The kids at Grace built their library out of recycled and reused materials to fit the UCC's Mission 4/1 Earth initiative. They are very proud of it and had fun with it too.  Come by to check it out and consider a Little Free Library of your own!  Their address is 4025 Wilmington Ave., St. Louis, MO 63116 and are Little Free Library charter #7760.

What a great idea!  Thanks and congrats to Grace UCC for sharing such an inventive and useful project. Is your church creating a project for the greater good?  Is your church doing something really cool that the rest of our Conference can learn from?  Email us your ideas, pictures and stories for the eCourier.
From the Heritage Files heritage

Recently a fellow member of the Washington Historical Society approached me and asked, "Do you recognize this stationery?"  I immediately identified it as a piece of seminary stationery used when the seminary was located at Marthasville.  I asked for a copy and showed it to Michael Boddy, Eden Archivist, who indicated that such a sample was not in the archives.

In case you can't read it, the English script in the section on the right of the letterhead says "College of the German Evangelical Synod of the West."  Above the globe is a quote from Psalm 11:10 "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding.  His peace endures forever."

In the center, beneath the illustration of the seminary building, the words are written in German.  Translated they read:  Seminary of the German Evangelical Church Society of the West, at Marthasville, Warren County, Missouri.

To the left, below the cross, cup and Bible, are more German words which read:"Seminary of the German Evangelical Church Society of the West.Above that, reference is made to the Augsburg Confession, Luther's Catechism and the Palatinate Catechism also known as The Heidelberg Catechism.

On the Bible are inscribed the words "Holy Bible" and citations to two Bible passages: Ephesians 4:3 which reads: "...making every effort to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace," and Matthew 28: 18-20: "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you.  And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

Above the cross is found "Ev. Joh.10,16."  In the NRSV this text reads:  "I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold.  I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice.  So there will be one flock, one shepherd."  The map reveals the location of the College and Seminary. The college was closed during the Civil War so this stationery dates to about 1860.  Later the seminary was moved to Normandy where it became known as Eden Theological Seminary.
