Notes from Davida
Rev. Dr. Davida Foy Crabtree

As your Acting Conference Minister, I will be writing to you periodically in this medium to update you on developments in our shared life as the Missouri MidSouth Conference. Today, I want to celebrate the great spirit at the Conference Annual Gathering.

It was a joy to meet many of you, and to see you in action as you dialogued together about important issues like the Bylaws, the budget, the Shannondale carbon credit program and the future of your Conference. I see among you a desire to deepen your common life as a Conference, to envision a future that will build up the Church and the churches, to support each other in your ministries and mission. In short, I was impressed!

The specific language of the new Bylaws will have to wait until the minutes have been reviewed and approved by the Conference Council but I want to report that the fundamental structure of the Bylaws was retained and important amendments were made that address the calling, supervision and termination of the Associate Conference Ministers.

The 2014 Budget was adopted with the understanding that this Conference will only be able to afford two ACM's through June of 2014 unless additional income and gifts come in or are pledged by next spring. The key figure we need to achieve is approximately $48,000. The Conference also adopted a resolution on support of Our Church's Wider Mission and it will be up on our website soon.

There were many moments of the Holy Spirit breaking in on us during the weekend. The music by Paul Westcott, Joe Rowley and Cliff Aerie made our spirits soar, the preaching and keynote by Dick Hamm gave us much to reflect on, the poignant celebrations of ordination and church anniversaries stirred us to cherish those who lead and have led.

One Holy Spirit moment came when we were about to commission the Visioning Team and the question of its diversity and inclusiveness arose. The gathered community paused, considered, and decided to regroup. Having the right mix of people to lead us in envisioning a new future is key, and it seemed that everyone knew that. Again, I was impressed.

As I make my way among you in these few months of service, I am eager to learn about your churches, your ministries, your hopes and fears and conflicts, your challenges and opportunities. Life in the Church is rich and full, and that is why I love this work!

We Are One
Rev. Dr. Marc A. Wessels

Dear Friends in Christ,

I am pleased to share with you that the 143rd Annual Meeting of the South Dakota Conference of the United Church of Christ gathered at Custer Community Church UCC elected me as their Conference Minister on Saturday June 8, 2013 confirming the selection of the Search Committee and the Board of Directors. The theme of the gathering was, "That They May All Be One" - Mitakuye Oyasin--We are all one was based upon John 17.22.

As I accepted the call to ministry within the South Dakota Conference, I shared my passion with the congregation for the land of the Plains and Black Mountains and my eagerness to travel throughout the vast and beautiful geography. The open land, the clear night sky, the struggle for justice and reconciliation between the peoples of the Dakota region, and ministry in remote settings - on Native American reservations, in small towns and cities stir my senses and intellect, and bring forth the artist and theologian within. In my assessment I see that there are many similarities in landscape, social justice issues and challenges to productive and meaningful ministry in my first and formative ministry in Australia and this new call.

During my acceptance comments I shared the story of one of America's first astronauts, Gus Grissom who died with Ed White and Roger Chaffee aboard an Apollo spacecraft during an all plugs out launch pad test on January 27, 1967 at Cape Canaveral. Grissom was a leader in the early astronaut corps who took spaceflight and safety issues seriously. Grissom was the second American to orbit the earth and commanded the first Gemini mission and was the commander of the first manned mission of the U.S. Apollo manned lunar landing program.

One of the tasks of those first NASA astronauts was public relations - selling the American public on the space program. Like many of the other astronauts who were geared more towards technology and flying technique, Grissom abhorred the PR role of public speaking which came with the job of the Original 7 astronauts. The story is told that on one occasion Grissom and some other astronauts were touring one of the rocket manufacturing facilities to see the rockets which would orbit them into space. At that time there were numerous fiery explosive failures of rockets as they reached for the sky. Of course this was disturbing to all - but especially to those like Grissom who would be sitting atop of those rockets.

At the end of the visit, in front of a large gathering of workers, Grissom was invited to speak in order to motivate and relate to the audience who had come to see the astronauts. Grissom, somewhat taken by surprise that he was expected to speak without preparation looked at the crowd and uttered three simple words, "Do good work." The crowd roared in approval at the concise speech. They got the point. Grissom and his peers would be riding the rockets they would be manufacturing... and it was Grissom's and the other astronaut's lives that would be in the balance between success and failure.

The response of the workers was so enthusiastic that they demanded that a large banner with Grissom's injunction be hung over the work bay where the rockets were assembled. And it was so. A large banner which read DO GOOD WORK was hung over their heads as a reminder of Grissom, the other astronauts, and the national goal to reach the Moon before the Soviet Union.

The challenge that we have as the Body of Christ wherever we find ourselves is to do good work in our ministry - to strive to be faithful disciples of Jesus and to live out the reality of his prayer that the church be one. His call reminds us of God's vision that all of creation, all humanity on this planet, indeed the whole of the universe is connected.

I have appreciated the connections which I have made here and the relationships and opportunities for ministry that we have done within the Missouri Mid-South Conference of the United Church of Christ. I have enjoyed traveling and discovering the diversity of our congregations from Memphis, Tennessee to Little Rock, Arkansas, from St Louis to St Joseph, Missouri. I am thankful for the hospitality and grace which I have received from clergy and laity alike as well as the collegiality of the MMSC staff and our Disciple of Christ partners in ministry. I want to thank you for your support as I have attempted to serve Christ through the MMSC in our congregations, in all three of our associations and in the wider church.

I look forward to working with you until July 31st, when I will leave the MMSC to undertake my new responsibilities in South Dakota. Until then I will be pleased to continue to work with you all in my various roles in numerous congregational and associational settings. Thank you for your kind letters and notes of support and encouragement as I make this professional and personal transition. May we be reminded of the reality that we are called to be one in Christ and may we encourage and support one another so that the Reign of our Living, Loving God may be realized.

Service of Healing and Blessing, St. Mark UCC Arnold

On June 2 Pastor Kim Brinkmann led the congregation in a Healing & Blessing  Service. St. Mark Relay for Life Team was taking part in the Arnold Missouri Relay For Life Event on June 7-8. The Luminaria Bags decorated the altar and sanctuary. The names of those who had fought the battle and are cancer free and the names of those who had lost their struggle with cancer were written on the Luminaria Bags. These names were read aloud and blessed during the service. The Relay For Life Team came forward as the congregation placed their hand on the person in the pew in front of them reaching the team as one body while they were blessed. The bags were then taken by the team and were placed with the other Luminaria Bags from the other Arnold teams.

Help, Hope and Healing
By Steve Carbno, Coordinator of Hope Village

Through what seemed like an endless winter, the season has finally changed!

While it hasn't been what one could call a monumental change, we have seen a few days above 70 degrees and the grass is turning green where the waters have receded. The tent is finally up and has been tested with record rainfalls. Nearly five inches in four days!

Volunteers staying at the camp have been working tirelessly to take on the task of completing the homes still on our list. Warm accommodations, great company and fine dining courtesy of our chef Jennifer have made their stay with us a pleasure. It's interesting that some of our early teams have been from California. They were able to experience springtime in North Dakota and learned the value of layering clothing to keep warm.

God has been working miracles in Minot through these folks. Not only in performing the carpentry tasks, but with meeting and connecting with the homeowners, staff of Hope Village and the people of Minot in general. One team expressed concern that after their first day they would never complete the 11 windows they were assigned. When they left they shared that not only had they completed their task, but had also sheet rocked a bedroom ceiling in another home!

As we continue our mission we look at the fact that we have over 100 homes to complete and wonder if we can get it done. With the help of God and those that travel to Minot we know with God, all things are possible!

We Need You to Volunteer at Hope Village Never underestimate the impact you can make as a Hope Village volunteer!

Misty Weed has come full circle thanks to you. Her journey has taken her from NEEDING volunteers to BEING a volunteer.

Weed wanted to give back to others in honor of all the help she received from Hope Village volunteers in rebuilding her home after the devastating Souris River flood of 2011. She gave back by becoming a volunteer herself.

Here's her story:

A parade of Hope Village volunteers gutted, cleaned and sanitized Weed's home, then installed drywall, flooring and cabinets. Weed's friends helped her paint colorful walls in her newly rebuilt home.

"I learned so many rebuild skills from the LDR [Lutheran Disaster Response] staff and the volunteers who worked in my flooded home. I want to give back," Weed said.

Hope Village utilizes many faith-based organizations under its collaborative umbrella. Lutheran Disaster Response coordinates the rebuild jobs, matching volunteers with work assignments.

By September, Weed and her son had moved back into their house. In January, Weed began giving back when she led a group of volunteers on the National Day of Service, tackling a painting job for another flood survivor. She has continued to volunteer though Hope Village and assist other flooded homeowners.

Weed's newly-refurbished home has memories from the many Hope Village volunteers who assisted. But more than that, her repaired home is filled with new memories of working with others and making a difference in the lives of those in need. -With reporting from Mary Carlson, Volunteer Coordinator, Lutheran Disaster Response at Hope Village.

News from CUE (Chicago, United, and Eden) Seminaries

Periodically, Chicago, United, and Eden will highlight a student or alum from one of the three seminaries. This month: Aaron Lauer from United Theological Seminary

Aaron Lauer, M.A., graduated from United Theological Seminary in 2010 but stayed to serve as a research associate for the Center for Public Ministry at United. In January, Aaron was selected for an interfaith Community Organizing Residency, through which he works with the MN Conference to expand the base of UCC congregations engaged in social justice advocacy. As a result of Aaron's efforts, one suburban congregation hosted a legislative dialogue session in April that brought together local legislators and 80 of their constituents to discuss issues of a fair economy, healthcare access and education.

Aaron will become a United student again this fall, working towards a Master of Divinity degree. Aaron grew up in Ainsworth, Nebraska, and attended Hastings College in Hastings, NE. He hopes to serve small town and rural congregations.

Are You Looking For a Way to Serve?

Shannondale Community Center's Wobus Craft Center is looking for volunteers this summer. The craft center is an outlet for local crafters to sell their creations. This part of the Shannondale ministry is free to the crafters and totally run by volunteers. The volunteers open shop each day, collect money from customers and keep the hummingbird feeders filled. Lodging is supplied, but volunteers are on their own for meals. This opportunity is great for those who have a yearning to serve, but are looking for a less physical opportunity for service. We welcome help for a week or a weekend! If this sounds like the personal ministry for you, please call the Shannondale office at 573-858-3284. Thank you!

Thank you for your prayers and support as we work together to maintain the historic ministry of Shannondale.

Conference Deacons
(posted 1/16/13)

The Conference Deacon program has been in place since September 2011.

The purpose of the Conference Deacon Program is to recruit and commission more than 60 individuals-both lay people and clergy (retired and clergy who are not currently serving in parish positions)-to visit the congregations of the Conference on behalf of the Missouri Mid-South Conference. Our goal is to have the deacons' visit each church assigned in our Conference 2 times a year in order to:

  • bring greetings on behalf of the Conference
  • offer a word of thanks for OCWM participation
  • encourage giving to OCWM and the special offerings of the UCC
  • most importantly, build relationships and strengthen the connection between the local and wider church.

This was an ambitious undertaking. Currently we have recruited approximately 35 deacons. Based on the success of this program and the requests from churches not currently assigned a deacon, we hope you will prayerfully consider the importance of this connection between the local and wider church and consider volunteering. If interested, please contact Joyce Bathke by phone at 314-409-2929 or email joyce.bathke@redcross.org .
