Youth and Youth Leaders Recognition
at Conference Annual Gathering

The Missouri Mid-South Conference would like to recognize youth and youth leaders who exemplify excellence in Youth Ministry at this year's Conference Annual Gathering (June 7-9 at Drury University in Springfield).  We will be focusing a portion of our Saturday evening banquet on youth and youth ministry; and we are currently soliciting nominees for recognition.

We are seeking youth and youth leaders who go above and beyond what is normally expected of their position to embody Christ's teachings in the world.  Nomination form are available on the Conference website by clicking here. Nominations must be turned in by April 30, 2013; all nominations will be reviewed by the Conference Youth Ministry Covenanted Ministry Team at their May meeting.  Successful candidates are expected to be present at the Saturday evening banquet for recognition.

Registration materials for the Conference Annual Gathering will be distributed soon. We hope to see you there as we honor our youth and youth leaders!

Youth at Conference Annual Gathering!

Attention all Pastors, Youth Leaders, Youth and CAG Delegates- starting this year at the Conference Annual Gathering (June 7-9 at Drury University), there will be special opportunities for Conference youth at our gathering!

If you are unfamiliar with the Conference Annual Gathering (CAG) it is a once-a-year event focused on mission, ministry, music and more!  (as well as the "business matters" of the Conference)  This is the once-a-year "family reunion" for the 150 churches of the Missouri Mid-South Conference!

Youth (ages 14 and up) will be invited to participate in several opportunities...

Mission Trip to Joplin:  those youth (ages 14 and up) who wish to participate in a Mission Trip to Joplin will arrive on Thursday evening (June 6) with their Pastors and/or chaperones.  We will participate in some bonding and training sessions Thursday evening, stay overnight at Drury, then head off to Joplin Friday morning after breakfast.  We will spend Friday morning and afternoon working in Joplin, then arrive back at the CAG for the beginning of the event.

Youth Stewards:  the CAG planning team is looking for a team of select High School Youth to serve as leadership for this gathering.  These stewards will be given the opportunity to participate in leadership and hospitality endeavors during the gathering, and will participate in worship leadership and other fellowship and educational opportunities.  They will also receive a tour of the Drury campus by Drury staff during the weekend.  The registration fees for these stewards will be paid by the Missouri Mid-South Conference through Our Church's Wider Mission Funds (in other words, they will attend the event FREE!)  Youth Stewards must be nominated by leaders from their local congregation using this nomination form. These youth will be expected to arrive Thursday evening with their Pastors and/or chaperones; but they will not go to Joplin for the Mission Trip.  They will be participating other in leadership activities back at Drury.

In addition to these two tracks, there will be activities for the youth all weekend long.  Saturday night's banquet will feature a power point presentation from this year's Conference Youth Event at Camp MoVal, and will focus on recognition of youth and youth leaders of note.  (see separate article above)  There will be a pizza party for the youth Friday evening, as well as an ice-cream social and a 70s/80s cover band for all to enjoy.  This will be a very special weekend in the life of the Missouri Mid-South Conference; and youth, this is your Conference, too!  Hope to see you at CAG!

MMSUCC Leadership Opportunities

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Leadership Development Committee of the MMSUCC wants you to know we have several leadership opportunities.  We ask you, as Conference and Association leaders, to help us identify prospects for the following:

1. Conference Council seats (three year terms) for election at June 2013 CAG:

(i)One nominee for:  Eastern Association  (currently held by male Clergy member)

(ii)One nominee for:  St. Louis Association (currently held by male Clergy member)

(iii)One nominee for:  Western Association (currently held by male Lay member)

The Conference is seeking a highly qualified, diverse pool of candidates for the limited number of Conference Council positions. Members shall be selected so that the Council represents diverse population groups and can bring to its deliberations a variety of points of view and life experiences, as well as access to cultural, religious, educational, civic, business and economic resources.

Click here for the nomination form for prospective candidates for the Conference Council that should be completed by you (or others) or the candidate, and returned to the committee no later than Wednesday, April 10th (via LJDAyers@aol.com).   Also, we would appreciate it if you would send a separate email to the same address regarding the prospect(s) and their contact information as soon as possible.  This will be helpful in case we don't received the expected completed nomination form in a timely manner.

2.)Deacon positions (openings available immediately).

Please see the ad within this eCourier under Job Opportunities. We have divided each association into multiple groupings. It is our goal to have two (2) deacons for each of the groupings in each association. Please contact Joyce Bathke (Joyce.Bathke@RedCross.org) with deacon suggestions and for information regarding the current roster.

Please prayerfully consider who might be prospects to serve in these very important roles in the life of our church.  We appreciate any assistance and guidance you can give at this time.

Thank you,

Laura Dierberg Ayers

314-795-9322 (Direct)

Thank You

The Conference recently sent an email on behalf of Immanuel UCC requesting possible donors for a member of their church community. Please see the words of thanks below. Also please note, the church is paying for the test kits on their own, so any donations to Immanuel are being accepted to help alleviate their cost. Thank you for your kindness.

"As a follow up to our plea for individuals to be tested for becoming donors of stem cells for Zachary Gaines, I would like you to know that we sent samples to be tested from 77 individuals from MMSUCC and Immanuel Church. We have not received results yet. So far the cost to Immanuel has exceeded $9,000. The response from the church and churches was tremendous. Thanks to all."

Tom O'Connor, Interim Senior Pastor.

Thank You to Camp MoVal Workday Volunteers

Last Saturday, over fifty people came to Camp MoVal to assist us in our annual Lenten Workday, preparing the camp for our upcoming summer camp season and helping us maintain this sacred space for all to use. I would like to personally thank the following Churches for sending out volunteers, Zion UCC in Union, St. John's Bem, and Emmanuel UCC in Holstein, St. John's in Chesterfield, St. John in St. Charles, Pilgrim UCC in Labadie, St. Lucas UCC, St. Peter's UCC Washington, Hope UCC in St. Louis, Immanuel UCC in Ferguson and Eden UCC Afton.

With the assistance of these people, we were able to accomplish projects like cleaning the pool, replacing screens in all the buildings, re-supplying firewood, installing a new basketball goal, cleaning and organizing the maintenance building, cleaning and getting Tambo Village ready for the summer season, trail maintenance, a tremendous amount of site cleanup and much more. There is still more to do, but we have already accomplished so much. Again, thank you for the MoVal staff and myself for a job well done.

Photo of the Week!

Despite the spring storm of the century we still had about 200 in worship at St. Martin's Dittmer and went ahead with our planned confirmation of ten new members. I was proud of the creed that this year's class helped me write for their confirmation worship... - Rev. Scott Lohse

*STATEMENT OF FAITH

(This year's class formulated their creed by creating a poetic analogy for their faith by comparing various mundane objects to what they know about God)

We believe that God is like an engine which is the heart of a machine. God started the breath of life flowing to all parts of the creation at the very beginning and keeps the church going fueled by the faith of believers.

We believe that God is like an orange which is a delicious surprise wrapped in a package. When you peel it and open it there is a sweet and refreshing gift inside. God also waits to surprise and refresh the believer as soon as we remove the layer of separation between earth and heaven with our prayer, praise and discipleship.

We believe that God is like a hair dryer whose hot wind cannot be contained but blows wherever it pleases. God's word also promises that those who trust in God won't be blown away or blown around.  Rather faith helps us to stand firm no matter which way the wind blows.

We believe that God is like a chair which is a place to rest also known as Sabbath. Resting in God means to put aside everything else in life which might distract us and to gain perspective.

We believe that God is love and love can sometimes be like fireworks. Love should be handled with care and respect. Love should be shared and enjoyed as we oooh and ahhh at the color, sparkle and pop which it gives to life.

We believe that God is present in everything and everywhere not just holy and sacred places. God is present in heaven and on earth; in church and in school; at home and away from home; in you and in me; in the present time; in the future; both now and forever.  Amen.

On Grieving a Companion Dog

By Rev. Marc A. Wessels

A family member of one of our church members recently experienced the loss of their dog which got me to thinking that one of the greatest joys of my life has been the pleasure of the company of an Irish Setter or two. I first fell in love with the breed while a child, when I met my first Irish Setter, whose name was Holly. She was a beauty to behold with great rich mahogany color. Her attitude was friendly and engaging to strangers like me. Holly was full of energy and life. It was therefore easy to be smitten by her and her breed. Later in childhood I read about an Irish Setter in Jim Kjelgaard's book which was later made into the Disney movie, "Big Red". Like the young boy, Danny, who upon laying his eyes on Red determines that no other dog will do to walk by his side, I promised myself that one day I would have an Irish Setter for my own. Little did I realize then that one never owns an Irish Setter - it is they that have a claim on you.

Over the years Irish Setters have been a blessing to me and those fortunate enough to enter into my experience. As a parish minister my setters travelled to my office and greeted all visitors. Children rushed into church on Sunday mornings and headed not for Sunday School classrooms or into the sanctuary but into my office to see the setter(s) in residence. Little hands offered dog biscuits and gentle licks were given in reward for the kindness of the children and their thoughtful parents. I remember a particular setter, an old retired national champion named May who came from a very limited socialized experience beyond the home and the show ring. When I adopted her ...

Dear Disaster Recovery Volunteers:

We are pleased to announce the opening of two opportunities for your group to participate in disaster recovery related to Hurricane Sandy.

Knowing of your group's particular interest in Hurricane Sandy recovery, we want to give you a heads-up before the forms 'go live' so you can be prepared to register your group. You can access these registration forms and information at http://www.ucc.org/volunteer/disaster-recovery-volunteers/ beginning tomorrow morning, Friday, March 22nd at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time

Opportunities now are available in Atlantic City, NJ in partnership with the Fuller Center for Housing.  This community is ready to embark on the repair/rebuild stage of disaster recovery.  The minimum age is 16 years (with some limited projects for volunteers age 14).  Registration Information

Opportunities for service (and group housing) now also are available in New York City in partnership with New York Cares with housing at a local UCC church.  This opportunity engages volunteers in the continuing muck out/mold remediation stage of disaster recovery. Volunteers at this location will not be doing repair/rebuild.  Also note: although disaster-related projects are assigned with priority, groups serving here also may engage in non-disaster-related volunteer projects with New York Cares.  Those particular project assignments are made one-month prior to the date of service.  The minimum age for this location is 18 years.  Registration

The length of time between destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy in late October of 2012 and today when impacted communities still are hovering between the continuing clean-up stage of recovery and the housing repair/rebuild stage illustrates the need for the commitment to long-term disaster recovery.  The recovery process takes a long time. The sustenance of faith feeds a commitment to accompany people through the long-term process of disaster recovery.  Thank you for that commitment of faith.

Your national staff and conference disaster coordinators continue to connect with long-term recovery committees that have formed locally in impacted areas.  We will continue to post opportunities for service here as they become available.

Blessings,

Mary Schaller Blaufuss, Executive for Volunteer Ministries,
United Church of Christ

Florence Coppola, Executive for National Disaster Ministries,

Job Opportunities

Conference Deacons

The Conference Deacon program has been in place since September 2011.

The purpose of the Conference Deacon Program is to recruit and commission more than 60 individuals-both lay people and clergy (retired and clergy who are not currently serving in parish positions)-to visit the congregations of the Conference on behalf of the Missouri Mid-South Conference. Our goal is to have the deacons' visit each church assigned in our Conference 2 times a year in order to:

  • bring greetings on behalf of the Conference
  • offer a word of thanks for OCWM participation
  • encourage giving to OCWM and the special offerings of the UCC
  • most importantly, build relationships and strengthen the connection between the local and wider church.

This was an ambitious undertaking. Currently we have recruited approximately 35 deacons. Based on the success of this program and the requests from churches not currently assigned a deacon, we hope you will prayerfully consider the importance of this connection between the local and wider church and consider volunteering. If interested, please contact Joyce Bathke by phone at 314-409-2929 or email joyce.bathke@redcross.org .
