MMS - United Church in Jamaica Partnership

In 2010 the partnership between the Missouri Mid-South Conference and the United Church in Jamaica and the Grand Cayman Islands entered a new era with the restructuring of the Jamaican Church.  The original partnership was with the North Middlesex Area Council but with the restructuring of the Jamaican church the North Middlesex Area Council became a part of the new Northeast Regional Mission Council which includes most the former North Middlesex Council and now includes the capital city of Kingston.

Click the image for a larger version of this map.

During our visit to Jamaica in early November we had an opportunity to visit some of our new partner churches in Kingston. Our first stop was at St John's church - a former Presbyterian congregation - in inner city Kingston. Pastor Silman Heines gave us a tour of the building and talked about the ministries of the congregation. He then introduced us to Sara Palmer who serves as the principle of the Mel Nathan preparatory. Mel Nathan is 18 years old and is the only Jamaican United Church preparatory school in inner city  Kingston.  Run by the congregation the school offers education for children in grades K-6. They ask parents to pay a fee of $4000 dollars Jamaican ( about $43 dollars US) per term. Many of the parents cannot afford this amount but the church still keeps and educates the children.

From St. John we traveled to North Street United Church where Rev. Nigel Pusey serves as the pastor. North Street is a former Congregational church that caught fire and burned in 2007 and was rebuilt and rededicated in September 2012 on the 175th anniversary of the congregation.  Like St. John North Street runs a prep school with 244 students. In addition to the prep school North Street also runs a community development center that includes a day care, medical clinic, bakery, wood shop, guidance school, and a cyber center with 18 computers that can be used by residents of the community.

Our next stop was Duke Street Church where Rev. Enio Davis serves as the pastor. A former DOC church Duke Street also has a community development center that they have had to close due to lack of funding. They have plans to reopen the center and offer training for people who want to work in the hotel business.

In addition to the congregations we visited the Synod Offices in Kingston as well as the Seminary where most of the United Church pastors receive their training and the International University of the Caribbean a new university that receives some support from the United Church in Jamaica.

Adding Kingston to our partnership will open new opportunities for involvement with urban ministries in the nation's capital. Next week I want to explore where our partnership is headed and opportunities for your congregation to enter into a partnership with a congregation in Jamaica and what that partnership might look like.

Please click here to see a slide show of our partnership team visit to Jamaica.

Conference Minister
Dear Covenant Partners,

The United Church of Christ, throughout its history and the shared histories of our predecessor bodies, has shown clear commitments to racial justice and equality. As Conference Ministers we feel compelled to speak out at this moment in time.

Our ancestors in faith led the movement for abolition. They were a voice of reason at the dawn of Reconstruction, when America attempted to rebuild a nation buttressed by white power and privilege. They fought long and hard during the time of Jim Crow to gain new ground in the equality of all races. They fought to end red-lining districts that forced black families into ghettos. And they walked arm in arm with our brothers and sisters of color during the Civil Rights movement.

They were willing to be jailed, persecuted, ridiculed, and even at times martyred for the cause of racial justice and equality.

Our own commitments to this movement of equality for all races are now being put to the test. In the days following the re-election of this nation's first black president, there are painful reminders of how pernicious the evils of white power, white privilege, and white supremacy remain in this great land of ours. And now is not the time for those who see with new eyes the fresh face of a richer, more diverse people to be silent. We must also let our practice and behavior reflect our commitment, by constantly examining ourselves lest we fall prey. (2Cor. 13:5)

Like the women and men who in previous times found their courage, their voice, their call to action - so must we now find ours as well. Let us hear again, and be inspired by, the words of the great abolitionist poet James Russell Lowell, who in "The Present Crisis" wrote:

"New occasions teach new duties; Time makes ancient good uncouth;

They must upward still, and onward, who would keep abreast of Truth."

Long before white men once again claim by divine right a privileged place at the expense of all others; and long before America loses the forward momentum gained in her great and interminable struggle with racial equality; and realizing that, though momentum has been gained and big steps taken toward racial justice, there is yet more light and truth to break forth in this ongoing struggle for equality: let us in this day renew our commitment to the struggle for racial justice and equality. Let us awaken to the new threats that are emerging in these days to this embrace of equality. Let us not be daunted by the long, hard road - but be invigorated by the gains made, emboldened by the costs paid already by true disciples, and energized by the promise of a vision of Shalom that many of us can see on the horizon of this new day.

We call on all settings of the church to maintain a vigilant voice in this struggle for racial justice and equality. We invite you to engage once again in Sacred Conversations on Race that open new doors for new understandings about race, prejudice, and privilege. We urge you to speak out when voices emerge on the landscape that threatens to turn back the clock and undo the work of those who came before us. We invite our white members, families, and churches to develop new skills as allies in dismantling white privilege and fostering new dimensions of racial justice and equality. We call upon preachers to find their voice and speak out when local and national leaders reclaim the old language of white power and privilege. And we invite us all to be in fervent prayer for that hoped-for day when all "will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

With a new hope for a new day to inspire us, we remain your humble servants in Christ,

Hurricane Sandy - Your Help is Still Needed

Friends,

My thanks to all of you for your support of disaster ministries regardless of where the disaster occurs. It is probable that all of you have seen the UCC web page created to provide information about Hurricane Sandy relief, response and recovery efforts. Yesterday, we added a Sunday bulletin insert which includes a prayer written by Jim Moos. Please share the link below with local churches in your Conference. A word encouraging people to check on the web site for information would be greatly appreciated.

Peace,

Florence

Bernice Nolte,a member of St. James UCC in Morrison, Mo., Wins the John Bennett award at Missouri School of Religion

Bernice Nolte has been a member of St. James since her husband was called to serve as pastor of the yoked churches at Pershing and Morrison. She and her husband were very active in the Festival of Sharing from its beginning. After the death of her husband she has been a faithful servant to our church's call to mission. She is instrumental in our churches outreach by leading and encouraging us with the following projects:

  • Helping sew bags and assemble school kits and health kits for Festival of Sharing and Joplin relief. She promotes the Festival at various conferences and events. She attends and works at the Festival each year.
  • She has encouraged and helped our Women's Fellowship to prepare lap blankets and quilts for the Emmaus Home in Marthasville. She is the contact person who helps our group provide extra gifts for a resident at the home.
  • Each week she quilts with the quilters and has contributed many quilts to the Festival of Sharing on behalf of our church.
  • Bernice willing helps the church with activities and projects. She helps with devotions, worship services, and is very supportive to the pastor.
  • She is diligently about sending cards, visiting in the nursing home and hospital, helping with shut-in and nursing home communion, helps with funeral dinners, and attends local and "the wider church" meetings representing our church.
  • She has been active in our CROP Walk's, Vacation Bible School and helped with Christmas programs.

Bernice is an asset to our church family and most of the things she does are done silently and without wanting to be recognized. She does these things because she feels they are the right thing to be done. Congratulations to Bernice!

Midtown Memphis Church Studies Harnessing Sunlight

Pastor Cheryl Cornish always knew her church would embrace the concept of going green. Now an unlikely source of renewable energy is rising on her church's horizon. "I think there's deep concern, especially and rightfully among younger generations, about what kind of planet they will be inheriting," said Cornish. In October, the approximately 350-member congregation of First Congregational United Church of Christ voted to begin negotiating with companies to install solar panels on top of the church's sanctuary, making it the first church in West Tennessee to consider what is

usually a cost-prohibitive project for nonprofits.

In the last few years the federal government has made solar panels more attractive to homeowners and businesses by offering substantial tax credits - as much as 30 percent of the cost - for those who purchase them.

But churches and nonprofits do not pay taxes, and therefore cannot receive that benefit. Even though the price of solar power systems has come down due to an increase in demand, it's still out of reach for most churches and nonprofits.

"Over the years this has come up from time to time," said Carla Peacher-Ryan, a 10-year member of First Congregational and also a member of the church's mission development and finance committees. "The first time anybody looked into it, it was cost-prohibitive. In the intervening years the cost of the systems has come down."

The church began talks with Lightwave Solar, a company based in Antioch, Tenn., near Nashville, which in addition to residential and commercial sales, helps nonprofits and churches finance solar power systems through investor companies.

Peter Calandruccio, director of Lightwave Solar's Memphis office, said that there are numerous options available once a company steps forward to partner with the church. What's more, Memphis is the perfect place to do it, he said.

"Tennessee gets more sunlight than most people think, and if you compare West, Middle and East Tennessee, West Tennessee and the Memphis area get more sunlight than Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga do," said Calandruccio. "That's based on..." Click here to continue reading online...

Got Cookies?

The Jazz Nativity is coming next month. The planning committee recognizes that many churches and individuals would like to contribute something but may not be able to do so monetarily. How about cookie baking? We want to have punch and cookies after each performance and that means a lot of cookies! Sundays, December 2 and 9,
10:45am-11:45am

During the Advent season, we hold many Christmas traditions dear to us that are all a part of "The Christmas Story." The story of the birth of Jesus is well-told & well-known to Christians. In this study we will explore the Biblical roots of Christmas, and listen deeply to how the different gospel writers tell (or do not tell!) different stories of Jesus' birth. Through this careful listening we will seek to refresh and expand our thinking about what it means to await the incarnation of Christ in our world even today. Join us on December 2 and 9 as we explore the Biblical roots of Christmas, led by Rev. Dr. Deborah Krause, Academic Dean and Professor of New Testament at Eden Theological Seminary.

UCC Musicians Association

Dear Pastors,

I hope your fall is off to a great start. For many, planning for the Advent/Christmas season is well underway. I also hope you will take the time to consider one more item  - choosing the right Christmas gift for your congregation to give your church musician to say "thank you" for all he/she contributes to the worship life of your church. A great gift for your musician - one that will keep on giving throughout the year - is a membership in the United Church of Christ Musicians Association.

UCCMA is an organization started by UCC musicians and organized for the purpose of mutual support and encouragement in the ministry of music. Members receive our e-mail newsletter every other month, containing the latest information concerning UCCMA, and our journal Worship, Music and Ministry, containing professional and practical articles on church music ministry, three times each year. Please visit our website at www.uccma.org. for more information.

In addition to the above, we also offer local workshops and a four-day, biennial conference featuring outstanding leaders, creative worship, numerous workshops and music reading sessions. Our next conference will be held in Seattle, WA, July 14-18, 2013.  We hope you will encourage and help your musician to attend this fine event. Being an UCCMA member will ensure your musician receives all the information about these workshops and conferences.

We also hope you will plan to attend, as the theme of the conference will be Worship and Music on the Edge, with emphasis on enlivening worship with creative arts. Our keynote presenter is Dr. Marcia McFee, author of The Worship Workshop and creator of The Worship Design Studio.

The dues for a one-year membership (July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014) is $50, but, as a special Christmas offer, we will add six months to the membership (from January 2013 to June 30, 2013).  A  two-year membership costs $90.00, a savings of $10.00.  We look forward to being able to include your musician in our membership. This offer extends through January 7, 2013.

Please use this membership form. Feel free to e-mail or phone me with any questions. I would be happy to speak with you!

A Little Help Goes a Long Way

In response to the desperate need for personal care items Friedens UCC in St. Charles took up a collection Sunday, November 18.  This is a tradition that started 6 years ago to the tremendous gratitude of a food pantry they regularly support, "F.I.S.H."  Friedens asks that other congregations contact their respective food pantries to see if this type of ministry will help them as it has helped F.I.S.H.

Please Join Us

You are invited to attend the Eden Choir Christmas Concert on Wednesday December 5, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the Wehrli Chapel.  Come, hear and sing the music of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. You're sure to see old friends and be filled with the spirit of the season! Fellowship and refreshments will follow.

We Need Your Photos for the Music Photo Album

The creation of a Missouri Mid-South Conference "Music Photo Album" is underway. We are asking each MMS congregation to share 5 random pictures of their church and congregation. To be  easily recognized, send 1 picture of your church sign which includes your church name, and 1 picture of your church building. The other 3 pictures are totally up to you, so your congregation can showcase your church's unique qualities and spirit. The pictures will be arranged randomly in a computer photo album and then put to music. The hope is that this project will be completed by the 2013 Conference Annual Gathering. Currently, only 3 congregations have provided pictures which have been used to create an example video of this project. Anyone can see the short video by following the internet link provided at the bottom of this article. We cannot stress enough that to make this project a success EVERY congregation MUST be represented. Pictures can either be mailed to the Missouri Mid-South Conference office or emailed directly to Rev. Dr. Doug Kaufman. Both the snail mail and email addresses are provided at the end of the video. Please spread the word about this project because we want each MMS church represented.

Thanks so much! Keep The Faith.
