Rebuilding Bolenge Hospital -- Update September 2012

Bolenge Hospital, located in the city of Bolenge, in the Equatorial Province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), was built in 1928 by the Community of Disciples of Christ in the Congo (CDCC), a partner church with Global Ministries for over 100 years.  In a typical year Bolenge Hospital treats over 16,000 patients; over 50 percent for HIV/AIDS- related illnesses.  Much work is also done at Bolenge Hospital to provide early childhood vaccinations, prenatal visits, and obstetrical care as well as treatment of chronic and punctual illness and disease.

On June 13, 2006, the Bolenge Hospital experienced an electrical fire, which completely destroyed the hospital's newer main building and equipment. Community members worked hard to save the people inside the building before it was completely engulfed by flames and no human lives were lost.   The patients were brought to the homes of doctors, pastors, and others in the community, and some were relocated to nearby Mbandaka.  At first after the fire, the hospital operated out of an old building that was equipped to handle Bolenge's wide range of health needs.

A plan to rebuild Bolenge Hospital was soon agreed upon and is being implemented as resources become available.  Approximately three years after the fire, the new pediatric ward building was completed, thanks in great part to the Robert and Abby Learned Family.  This was a major triumph in the rebuilding of the hospital. By February of 2010, the pediatric ward was outfitted with equipment, beds, and medical instruments and the new ward was dedicated.

In August 2012 Reverend Sandra Gourdet, Area Executive for Africa, visited Bolenge Hospital with a delegation of visitors for the Dedication of the Maternity Ward.  The Maternity Ward will have 50 beds and is connected to the Pediactric Wing via a covered walkway.  The building has been completed and funds have been allocated to begin to furnish the Maternity Ward.  The Maternity Ward was made possible in great part thanks to the Gene and Sue Johnson Family and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of North Carolina.

Along with the dedication of the Maternity Ward, ground was broken for the third phase of the rebuilding process - the Surgery Wing, dedicated to the memory of Topper Franke.  Construction began shortly after the groundbreaking and work continues in order to complete this phase of the project.

Photos of the Week!

The 44th Annual Chicken Dinner was held at Immanuels UCC-Holstein on Sunday, October 7. The band from Friedens UCC in Warrenton entertained the hungry crowd.

Saint John's United Church of Christ, located at 4136 N. Grand Blvd, is hosting its 4th Annual Beloved Community Conference November 1 - 4th to equip people of faith to work toward a Martin King, Jr.'s vision of peace and justice in light of the November 6th election.

Renowned speaker, author and scholar Dr. Obery M. Hendricks will open at a community forum, on Thursday, November 1st at 7pm, discussing "Martin Luther King and a New Political Economy of Justice." Friday speakers include Lara Granich of Missouri Jobs with Justice, Dr. Jonathan Smith of Saint Louis University and conclude with a lunch for faith leaders with Mayor Francis Slay and President Lewis Reed of the Board of Aldermen.

Hendricks is a visiting scholar in the department of religion and the Institute for Research in African-American Studies at Columbia University and is professor of biblical interpretation at New York Theological Seminary.

The Washington Post called his book, The Politics of Jesus: Rediscovering the True Revolutionary Nature of Jesus' Teachings and How They Have Been Corrupted "essential reading for Americans." Last year he published a collection of politically and economically explosive essays under the title, The Universe Bends Toward Justice. He is a member of the National Religious Leaders Advisory Committee of the Barack Obama presidential campaign and also the Faith Advisory Council of the Democratic National Committee.

Before entering his theological career, Hendricks was a Wall Street investment executive. He received his master of divinity with academic honors from Princeton Theological Seminary, and both his MA and PhD in Religions of Late Antiquity from Princeton University.

The conference will launch 6 p.m. Thursday with a reception and 7 p.m .community forum with Hendricks as keynote. Music will be provided by Wayman Temple African Methodist Episcopal Church.

On Friday, the Faith Leaders' Institute will begin at 9 a.m. led by Hendricks. Skill-building sessions by Granich and Smith will help faith leaders use community organizing and worship liturgy to mobilize congregants to action. The session will break for a 12:30pm lunch with the mayor and president of the board of aldermen, both candidates for St. Louis city mayor in 2013.

Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., the church is hosting its annual community health fair in partnership with BJC, Children's Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, Mercy, and Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Free health screenings, flu shots, physicals, prizes and a healthy lunch will await all participants.

The weekend will close with Sunday's 10:30 a.m. Community Worship Celebration with the Very Rev. Mike Kinman of Christ Church Cathedral preaching. After worship congregants will canvass the neighborhood to get out the vote in low-turnout wards.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.sjuccstl.org, call 314.570.1901 or email sjucc@yahoo.com.

Longing For Cucumbers

When the people of Israel, going through the desert, were fed with manna from heaven, they got tired of the same thing everyday and began to wish they were back in Egypt, where - among other delicacies- they used to eat cucumbers (See Numbers 11:4-6).

When the Pilgrims, after that first, deadly cold winter, finally in the spring saw the Mayflower returning to England, many thought of going back on the ship. But they remembered the words from Hebrews which had given them the name of "Pilgrim":

These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city

-Hebrews 11:13-16 KJV

We cannot go back to Egypt and cucumbers or to England and the old ways. We are looking for the City of God.

PIPHANY - JOURNEY WITH VISION

St Paul United Church of Christ, Hermann, Missouri

ADD AN ECUMENICAL TRADITION: THE MORAVIAN LOVEFEAST

  - Rev. Dr. Michael Bone, Zion, Union - Bring an old tradition into your congregation's celebration of Christmas - the origins and practice of the Moravian Lovefeast, particularly during the Christmas season.

BECOMING AN EPIPHANY CHURCH

- Rev. Dr John Bracke, retired Professor of Biblical Studies

Explore how the Epiphany Season might offer congregations a way to hold together being an Epiphany Church and acting like an Epiphany Church. We will explore the kinds of visions of church that emerge from the lectionary texts for the Epiphany Season (Year C) consider a planning model that might allow a congregation to act creatively upon its vision of being an Epiphany Church.

THE WISEMEN: AN EPIPHANY

- Dr Marc A. Wessels, Associate Conference Minister

Rediscover and reclaim the traditional story of the Wise Men through artwork and prose. Participants will be challenged to consider how we celebrate these symbolic figures and their vision in the season of Epiphany. Participants are encouraged to bring images and figures of their own Wise Men from their family or church mangers.

EPIPHANY - MAKE IT A BANNER SEASON!

 - Linda Heck, member, St Paul, Hermann

This workshop explores the themes of Epiphany and encourages the creation of banners for the worship community. Come and explore the richness of symbols and materials utilized at St Paul to create banners. Consider how banners can be used as a form of artwork to reinforce the themes of the liturgical period following Christmas known as Epiphany.

EPIPHANY: AN EPIPHANY EPIPHANY

- Rev Cliff Aerie, MMSC Artist in Residence

Make a first-hand opportunity to experience a liturgical drama that invites the entire congregation to follow the Three Wise Men on their quest for the Christ Child. Participants will receive scripts, provided production notes, costume ideas, staging instructions, and discussion starters for theological reflection. You too can present this in your church on Epiphany Sunday.

A creative Epiphany-themed worship will close our time together!

We Need Your Photos for the Music Photo Album

The creation of a Missouri Mid-South Conference "Music Photo Album" is underway. We are asking each MMS congregation to share 5 random pictures of their church and congregation. To be easily recognized, send 1 picture of your church sign which includes your church name, and 1 picture of your church building. The other 3 pictures are totally up to you, so your congregation can showcase your church's unique qualities and spirit. The pictures will be arranged randomly in a computer photo album and then put to music. The hope is that this project will be completed by the 2013 Conference Annual Gathering. Currently, only 3 congregations have provided pictures which have been used to create an example video of this project. Anyone can see the short video by following the internet link provided at the bottom of this article. We cannot stress enough that to make this project a success EVERY congregation MUST be represented. Pictures can either be mailed to the Missouri Mid-South Conference office or emailed directly to Rev. Dr. Doug Kaufman. Both the snail mail and email addresses are provided at the end of the video. Please spread the word about this project because we want each MMS church represented.

Thanks so much! Keep The Faith.

Rainbow Scarf Project: Help the Church Stand Against the Bullying of LGBTQ Youth

Calling all knitters, crochet artists and weavers! We need you to help us fulfill a dream: turn General Synod into a landscape of bright colors to raise awareness about LGBTQ teens endangered by bullying-and the related risk of suicide. With your help, we're confident we can distribute 3,000 brightly-colored scarves to delegates and guests when General Synod meets June 28-July 2, 2013, in Long Beach, California.

Each person at Synod who accepts a free scarf will sign a pledge to take an action against violence. Resources and workshops on how to prevent violence against LGBTQ teens, women, elders, people of color and others will help individuals and congregations take practical steps in their community, and we'll keep the momentum going after Synod adjourns.

Steps to help:
Make a scarf (as many as you can!)
▼ about 60 inches long ▼ about 4-6 inches wide ▼ any pattern you like
Use Red Heart Super Saver Color: "Primary."

So help us bring the rainbow to Long Beach! If you join our Facebook page we'll keep you informed about steps your church can take to protect youth from bullying! Want to learn more? Email rainbow@ucccoalition.org.
Click here for additional information and where to send your scarf.
