THE GRACE FUND FROM A RECIPIENT PERSPECTIVE

The GRACE Fund was established to help provide a financial bridge for families building their families through adoption.  To date, over $201K has been donated helping a whopping 52 families welcome a new family member home!  Please consider supporting a family in need of financial resources to bring their family together:  Support the GRACE Fund!

Following is the first in a series of articles sharing a bit about the impact of this fund:   From a recipient perspective, Cris writes...

For our family, GRACE Fund support is more than just money given-It is an invitation to be part of a larger adoption community.  Late in the summer of 2012, we began our adoption process with AAI, with our hearts full of all the love and joy that we just couldn't wait to pour into our new sweet boy, waiting for us a world away.                continue reading....

UPCOMING TRIP TO UGANDA & ZAMBIA
Our Program Coordinator Salem Richards will be traveling to Uganda and Zambia in the coming month. Her trip focus is to both strengthen existing program and partnerships as well as identify new opportunities. Salem's agenda includes hiring additional staff, meeting with officials, visit children's homes and partnered NGO's. Visit the Uganda section of our website to learn more about this program.

An invitation to investigate a new international adoption program will take Salem to Zambia on this trip as well. We are excited to learn about ways we may help children in this country

One of the great needs Salem has witnessed is the need for stimulating crib toys for bed-bound special needs children. Many children with special needs are confined to their cribs for very long periods of time and need extra stimulation. We would love to be able to provide crib toys to some of these children in the orphanages that we visit and encourage you to participate by contributing to funds to purchase new crib toys or if you would if you would like to donate new or gently used crib toys please contact Salem for the shipping info and types of toys needed. Items should be received by July 1.
FEATURED WAITING CHILD
Rachel is about six years old and her smile absolutely lights up the room when you interact with her. She is interested in toys but has a difficult time interacting with what is available (not much). She stares intently at you when you talk to her and then will make "talking" motions with her mouth as if to communicate, but no sound comes out. She loves to be tickled and will laugh and laugh.

Rachel loves to be held and gotten out of her bed. She spends most of her day laying in a dark room in her crib or in a stroller sitting on the porch. She eats well (being fed) and is a good size for her age. Sadly, there have been no efforts to potty train her.

She has cerebral palsy, which means her body is very stiff and she has a hard time controlling her limbs. It is difficult to tell how she is affected cognitively because CP affects her mouth muscles and she cannot speak. Some children with CP are typical cognitively and others have cognitive disabilities.

This sweet girl will certainly benefit greatly from the love of a family and some intensive physical, occupational and speech therapy. She has a lot of potential that will never be met in the small, impoverished orphanage in which she lives. Rachel's orphanage doesn't believe anyone would ever want to adopt her and will not put any more paperwork together on her file until we find a family for her. We have limited background information at this time but if we found a seriously interested family we would be able to get more information. Please contact Salem if you or anyone you know might be interested in this beautiful little girl.

FEATURED WAITING CHILD

This cute little guy is about six years old and likes to play with his peers. He can walk and run, while avoiding obstacles and he eats well and is potty trained, except at night.

He was found abandoned in 2009 and has been diagnosed with Downs Syndrome, but is otherwise healthy. He is developmentally delayed in language but does use simple words like "milk", "water", and "need potty" and understands and follows some instructions from adults.

He needs a family who can provide him with the love and support he lacked in his early lifecontact Marquita for more information!
FEATURED WAITING CHILD

This lovely girl from suffers from albinism.  Under the intense West African sun, "suffer" is not a word chosen lightly.  Her delicate eyes and skin are frequently irritated and burned, despite the efforts of a missionary who has given her sun glasses and has tried to make sure that she has a steady supply of sunscreen.  She has grown up in an orphanage and is in desperate need of a forever family.  She believed, twice now, that she had an adoptive family, but due to unusual circumstances having nothing to do with her, these opportunities have fallen through.  She is a quiet, sensitive girl with a very sweet disposition.   This child was born in June of 2002. She cannot be the oldest child in the home due to the rules of the country.   If you would like to discuss the possibility of being her parents, please contact Gay
FEATURED WAITING CHILD

URGENT! AGING OUT! This wonderful girl was born November 9, 1999. She is healthy and has no known special needs. She is happy and smart, and enjoys reading, dancing, and listening to music. She is in the third grade of a local school. She is eager to go to a family in the U.S. She must be referred to a family before she turns 14 this November; the latest a family can submit a dossier for her adoption is the end of September. The CCCWA will likely expedite her case.  Contact Ky for more info.

CHINA - ONE TO ONE PROGRAM

AAI recently applied for the One to One orphanage support program in China. This program matches our agency directly to one orphanage that we will offer financial and volunteer support. Supporting an orphanage through this program allows AAI to receive more non special focus and special focus children onto our individual list and bypasses the "shared list" experience many of the files go through.
AAI is in need of families with completed dossiers in order to be approved for this new China program.  If you or anyone you know might be considering an adoption in
China, now is the time to apply!  contact Ky for more information.

The China program has over 3,000 waiting children with varying special needs, 1-14 years of age.  Families with special needs children typically complete the adoption process in 12-18 months.
THE NANNY CAMPAIGN CONTINUES

Our nanny campaign is going well! We are so appreciative of the donations that have come in to help provide additional nannies for the children of Sele Enat in Ethiopia!

Your donation of just $30 will pay one nanny for two weeks of care. $60 pays a nanny for an entire month!  When we receive your donation, we will send a handwritten card to you, and to any mother in whose honor you are donating. Donations over $100 get a beautiful scarf as well!

You can donate online by designating "Nanny Campaign" or by mailing a check to AAI - 709 S. Peabody Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

This is such a critical time for these little ones - thanks for your support!

EIGHTH GRADER'S TRIP TO ETHIOPIA - ALYSSA'S STORY

Alyssa In March of this year, this teenager went to Sele Enat in Ethiopia to volunteer.  As is often the case, it was a life-changing experience for her and she was touched by the children she met.  Alyssa was so inspired she raised funds at her school for AAI AND made a beautiful video detailing her trip and experiences.   Check it out and share with your friends!
AAI FAMILY FEATURED IN NY TIMES: FILLING UP AN EMPTY NEST

They live in a nine-bedroom house on a farm in Tower, Minn.."  continue reading....
