NEW IRIS PUBLICATION ON INVASIVE SPECIES

How well does existing legislation at the federal and Ontario levels address invasive alien species?
In November, IRIS's Andrea L. Smith, Dawn R. Bazely, and Norman Yan had their article, Are legislative frameworks in Canada and Ontario up to the task of addressing invasive alien species?, published in the Biological Invasions journal. This article examines how well existing legislation at the federal and Ontario levels addresses invasive alien species threats, and thus contributes to the international Convention on Biological Diversity commitments. The answer: invasive alien species was not the central focus of most legislation.

Faculty and Students Welcome!
IRIS is currently going through a charter renewal process which includes a site visit with our external reviewers. Faculty and Senior Fellows are invited to participate in this visit on January 16th, from 1:30 p.m. - 2:15 p.m. and students from 2:30 p.m. - 3:15 p.m., both in 305 York Lanes. In addition, IRIS Executive members will meet from 11 a.m. -noon. We will be displaying testimonials, posters and other research outputs, both physically and in a PPT. You can drop them off at 9 am if you haven't brought them by already.

Building a Barrier-Free University
IRIS is participating in Inclusion Day!
Danielle Tucker, lead author of the study and a Master's student of Critical Disability Studies, will provide a 15 minute presentation of the 2012 IRIS report's primary findings of community member perceptions of accessibility at York University, followed by a roundtable discussion on how to challenge existing built barriers and ensure future construction incorporates an expanded idea of 'bodies in space'. Danielle's presentation is at 2:30 pm in 242 York Lanes.
York University's Centre for Human Rights is hosting its 5th annual Inclusion Day Conference. This one-day conference will include sessions where participants will have the opportunity to explore the concepts of inclusion and belonging through a human rights lens. Keynote speakers, session presenters and workshop facilitators will have the opportunity to engage attendees in critically analyzing notions of space and the bodies that are/are not included. JAN. 27 & 29: IRIS DIRECTOR SEARCH

One-hour sessions with short-listed candidates
All members of the IRIS community are invited and encouraged to attend a one-hour session with each of two short-listed candidates for the position of IRIS Director. At each session the candidate will speak for up to 20 minutes about his or her vision for IRIS followed by a question and answer period. Those attending will have an opportunity to provide confidential feedback for the Search Committee's consideration.

Centre of Excellence in Responsible Business (COERB) Events
To kick off the year, COERB has lined up two CSR talk by two major banks. On January 28, at W254 Schulich from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Rachel Guthrie, Senior Manager, Corporate Responsibility, TD Bank Group
will speak on Measurement and Metrics in CSR.
And on January 29, at W132 Schulich from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Kaz Flinn, Vice President Corporate Social Responsibility, Scotiabank will speak on Making a Difference - The Scotiabank roadmap to CSR and greener living. We hope to see you there!

GREENING IDEAS FOR APARTMENT BUILDINGS

Students examine engineering solutions to apartment building
 Each year, UofT students in the Engineering Strategies and Practice course are given real world problems to solve. York University Librarian and IRIS member, Peter Duerr, submitted a proposal for his apartment buildings in December 2012. Two teams were selected to handle the proposal to find solutions for either a solar panel installation or a green roof. The overall goal was to increase energy efficiency of the building and/ or have a system to generate energy in an environmentally friendly fashion.

PETER VICTOR INDUCTED INTO THE CLUB OF ROME

IRIS Senior Fellow recognized for Managing Without Growth book

Last month, YFile featured Faculty of Environmental Studies professor, and IRIS Senior Fellow member, Peter Victor, in the article, "FES professor inducted into Club of Rome". Peter Victor is the former dean of York's Faculty of Environmental Studies and is known as a leader in the field of environmental studies, specializing in ecological economics. The Club of Rome is a non-profit global think-tank that addresses a variety of international political issues, proposes practical solutions, and encourages public involvement. Victor's most recognized achievements include the the publication of his 2008 book Managing Without Growth: Slower by Design, not Disaster; which focuses on alternatives to economic growth.
