You Can Be Happy if You Decide to Be
Well, the holidays are over and you're probably feeling generally burned out by all the excess - too much socializing, too much family, too much food and drink, too much money spent and the list goes on. The holidays, while mostly enjoyable, can also bring about a real "letdown" feeling when they're over. We often feel blue, out-of-sorts, and lacking direction and focus. So what do we do to feel more "together" and "in control" after such a time? We make resolutions! You know the drill: I will lose 10 pounds in the next three months, I will be kinder to my partner, I'll stick to a strict budget, etc.
Well, I've got another one to add to your New Year's Resolutions list and that is:
I WILL BE MORE POSITIVE IN MY THINKING IN ORDER TO ATTRACT WHAT I REALLY WANT.
Did I make this idea up? I wish! No, this concept is filtering into all of our brains on a daily basis and is "all the rage" these days. It's trendy. It's fashionable. And yes, it can lead to the attainment of a fabulous wardrobe. And that's not all!
The entire concept solidified for me the other night while watching a film a colleague loaned me called, "The Secret." While very Hollywood, and at times downright cheesy, the basic message is very good. In short, it's all about "the law of attraction" which states that what we focus on in our minds is what we get. In short, what we tell ourselves about what is possible for us to attain, is what we draw to us.
For example, if we believe that all men are jerks and that they really do come from Mars, that's the kind of guys we'll attract. On the other hand, if we believe that there is a multitude of decent, kind, loving, and emotionally available men out there just waiting to meet someone fabulous like ourselves, those are the kind of guys that we'll attract.
Other great thinkers call it, "being in the flow." You know that feeling when you're doing what you love and everything is just so easy and seems to fall into place. You feel warm and fuzzy inside and feel connected to everything and everyone around you. That's what I'm talking about. That's exactly the feeling I have right now as I write this. I feel lit up inside, thrilled about sharing what I know with others, totally connected to my purpose, and knowing deep in my heart that I am using the gifts I was given. It's a fabulous feeling and a lot better for my health than a chocolate bar!
I'm sure you've had similar moments and my guess is that you want to have more of them. We all do. How can it be done, you ask? BY CHANGING OUR THINKING. You see, we learn a lot of things in school, but something sadly lacking in the curriculum is how to think properly. I feel that as a society, the majority of us suffer from what they call in 12-step groups, "stinking thinking." We are constantly telling ourselves negative things about who we are and what we can achieve. A lot of this is unconscious and we don't even realize we're doing it. I mean, who in their right mind would consciously sabotage themselves hundreds of times a day and continue to feel unfulfilled and not get what they really want out of life?
And what do we end up getting when we put such messages out to the Universe? Exactly what we put out there. In "The Secret," they say that we create our own reality through our thoughts - this is not a new idea as many famous philosophers, scientists, and mystics have been saying this for thousands of years. And yet, so many of us ignore this basic truth and keep ourselves stuck by "playing small" in life and not asking for too much. God forbid we should be successful, happy, healthy, and full of love.
I know this way of being all too well as I come from a family and a culture where suffering is almost next to Godliness. The fodder for most conversation focuses on how bad one's health is, or the horrible state of the world and how uncaring the human race is, etc. I soaked up these messages very early on and walked around with my head down, being ever so serious (I'm still working on that one), and feeling the weight of the world on my shoulders.
But lately, I've had an epiphany and that is that my suffering and focusing on the negatives doesn't help myself or anyone else live a better life, clean up the environment, stop wars and killing, or end poverty. It just ends up depressing the hell out of me (and everyone around me) and leaves me feeling hopeless and apathetic. When you're feeling depressed and hopeless, chances are you're not going to have much "get up and go" to change things for the positive on a global level.
I find that an old adage comes in very handy for bringing about the positive changes we desire in ourselves and in the world around us and that is: FAKE IT 'TIL YOU MAKE IT. Act as if you have whatever it is you want RIGHT NOW even in the face of contrary evidence. Your brain doesn't know the difference - it believes what you tell it to be true.
In this vein, I leave you with some homework to start off your New Year on a positive and affirming note:
On an index card, write down five positive affirmations to attract things you want in your life and write them as if they have already manifested in your life. For example, "I am fit and healthy. Every day I become healthier and stronger in my body and my mind."
Read your affirmations out loud once in the morning upon awakening and once before bed so they set your day and then summarize your day and soak deeply into your unconscious.
Do this for three months and see what happens! You'll be amazed.
Happy thinking!

Imagine Yourself As ...
Imagine yourself as a deep-sea diver, a ballroom dancer, a professional athlete, a famous artist, or whatever you can imagine. "No, that is not me", the timid little voice inside your head escapes into your conscious thoughts. Take a moment to reflect on how many times per day your mind rejects what your imagination dreams up. It then may dawn on you as no surprise that many of us live our daily lives with self-limiting behaviors. When we come to realize that it is our own self-limiting thoughts that are creating and constraining our realities, which are keeping us from embodying our imagination, we then can start to take action and move from a restrictive mindset to one where manifesting our goals and dreams is second nature.
Seeing with new eyes and thinking with positive life-affirming thoughts, one can begin to make the shift to a manifesting mindset. Manifesting is defined as a product of change brought through the direction of consciousness. When one can start thinking with this awareness in mind, one can take an active role in accepting their imagination as a catalyst for truly realizing their dreams. Isn't this empowering? Replacing your negative emotions with positive ones is the first step in manifesting the life you desire. One surefire way of replacing negative emotions is to start by writing down positive affirmations. For instance, one can change a self-limiting thought of, "I'll never be a good public speaker" to "I am someone who speaks in public with ease and joy, someone who the world wants to hear." Or, one can change the limiting belief that, "I will never make enough money to meet all my needs and feel secure," to "The universe supports me, provides for me, and is safe." Start coming up with positive affirmations to replace old thought patterns. Write them on a piece of paper and post it where you can see it during the day. This way, you can continually remind yourself of these new thought patterns. These new beliefs will start permeating your mind and body, and you will be well on your way to creating a manifesting mindset in which you can create what you imagine. Another way to practice replacing your old thought patterns with new ones is to say your affirmations out loud in front of a mirror. This technique makes you face yourself, and saying your affirmations out loud usually brings a greater emotional response to them as they start to sound true. So, start today with changing your old self-limiting thoughts to positive life-affirming ones. You have nothing to lose but your old limitations. Try it! It is truly easier than you can imagine.

Knights of the New Years Resolution
Every January 1st we make New Year's Resolutions because we want a better year if not a great year, and it is a long-standing tradition of the holiday. Resolutions usually revolve around a long-standing want, need, or problem we have that we would like resolved. Something for example like losing weight to look better and increase your health and life expectancy. That entails things like working out, eating right, and the thing that ties everything else together ... thinking right. What you are going to learn will make this systematically automatic.
The average life expectancy of you doing things right to accomplish your resolution is about four days! Nothing got resolved because you had no resolve! Just a fleeting notion to start putting in effort. It ends before achieving effect and the next year, you are again facing off against your failure.
"This year will be different," you might say. Well, here is something to do to make it that way. Your New Year's Resolution Solution is to change your timetable. Reviewing progress you made for a year is not enough. We too easily forget and let it slip from our mind to unimportance. Give yourself instead a weekly review of your progress. In the first week you put in four days toward your resolution. That is pretty good actually! Just three days a week in a gym is enough to give people very favorable results.
Working from your success for that week, take in the mind set that your resolution is not so much a goal as it is a game. The goal is the prize that keeps you motivated, but the game is keeping at doing what you need to do in order to win that prize. Going ahead for another week will get you ahead of the bulk of players. If you don't believe it, then notice how the over-crowded health club you were in last week now seems like a very vacant facility this week.
Congratulations, you persevered when they did not! Be steadfast and stay in the game! See it as utmost importance to have unwavering commitment to the point of relentless obsession for the prize. "GO FOR THE GOLD," as Olympians would say. You have got to totally immerse yourself in the game in order to play it right. You have got to be a game enthusiast! You are on a journey, a Holy Quest! A journey to a game enthusiast means FUN!
The calendar is your game board. Don't be taken off the board. Be steadfast and stay in the game! Every week is a trip around the game board. Every seventh day is where you contemplate, analyze, figure, fix, alter, improve, refine, adapt, adopt, re-adopt, pat yourself on the back and give yourself a reward, then re-dedicate yourself to your plan of action for the following week. 52 times around the board and you are crowned King or Queen! FOR REAL!
That not only gives you your goal, it gives you royal bragging rights - tales of how you victoriously conquered your enemy and seized controlling power over your vast enchanted dominion. So, whether they are led by the archetype of oversize ogres, a maniacal wizard, or menacing dragons, matters not. You can credulously threaten that any enemy you righteously declare war on this year will also face the same fate of being permanently vanquished by your invincible heroic army of devoted and boldly brave Knights of the New Year's Resolution. What can you do to guarantee a strong future for your company?
