Gestational Diabetes Webinar- Moving from Evidence-Based Guidelines to Practical Application

Date and Time:

Description: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy in the United States. Controversy exists regarding GDM screening and diagnosis; however, medical nutrition therapy, glucose monitoring, physical activity and if necessary, medication are the most accepted management strategies. Other important issues in GDM include weight management, food safety and cultural considerations. This webinar will discuss the definition, diagnosis and management of GDM, and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' evidence-based GDM nutrition practice guideline. Through the use of case studies, the participant will learn how to incorporate the Nutrition Care Process into various practice settings.

Hungry and Overweight: How is it Possible? Webinar

Date and Time:

Tuesday, Feb 26, 2013; 2:00pm-3:00pm
Description: Gain a good understanding of the factors that contribute to children being simultaneously hungry and overweight and learn how food insecurity affects children. Learn about services available to families and be inspired to get involved in hunger programs in your community.
This webinar is the first in a series by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation and Kids Eat Right as part of the Future of Food project. It is planned with Feeding America through an educational grant from the National Dairy Council.

Building a Healthier Future Summit 2013

Date and Location:

March 6-8, 2013; Washington, DC

Description: In March 2013, the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA), which works with the private sector and PHA honorary chairwoman First Lady Michelle Obama to solve the nation's childhood obesity crisis, will bring together more than 1,000 leaders from public, private and non-profit organizations, all committed to solving the childhood obesity crisis in America.

Epidemiology and Prevention/Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Metabolism 2013 Scientific Sessions

Date and Location:

March 19-22, 2013; New Orleans, LA 

Description: The primary goal of the EPI/NPAM Spring 2013 Scientific Sessions is to promote the development and application of translational and population science related to the prevention of heart disease and stroke and promotion of cardiovascular health.
The Councils on Epidemiology & Prevention (EPI) and Nutrition, Physical Activity & Metabolism (NPAM) jointly plan the EPI/NPAM Spring 2013 Scientific Sessions. The sessions focus on obesity, nutrition, physical activity, genetics, metabolism, biomarkers, risk factors, subclinical disease, clinical disease, healthy populations, and global health and prevention clinical trials. The program also highlights strategies to translate advances in basic and clinical science into efforts to promote cardiometabolic health in both the clinical and population setting.
The program includes presentations of new high-quality, high-impact research; and, it is organized around oral, moderated poster, and poster abstract presentations, with special translational science lectures and debates on current issues relevant to cardiometabolic health and preventive cardiology.

Grant Opportunities

Time-Sensitive Obesity Policy and Program Evaluation (R01)

 

Award Note:
The number of awards is contingent upon NIH appropriations, and the submission of a sufficient number of meritorious applications.

Deadline: February 11, 2013; March 14, 2013; April 11, 2013; May 13, 2013

Summary: This FOA issued by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK); the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI); the National Cancer Institute (NCI); the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), encourages research grant applications from institutions/organizations that propose to conduct exploratory/developmental clinical studies that will accelerate the development of effective interventions for prevention or treatment of overweight or obesity in adults and/or children. Exploratory epidemiological research with a goal of informing translational/clinical research will also be supported within this program.

Award Note: Direct costs are limited to $275,000 over an R21 two-year period, with no more than $200,000 in direct costs allowed in any single year.

Award Note: Because the nature and scope of the proposed research will vary from application to application, it is anticipated that the size and duration of each award will also vary. Although the financial plans of the IC(s) provide support for this program, awards pursuant to this funding opportunity are contingent upon the availability of funds.

Summary: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA), issued by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR), NIH, and the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, CDC, encourages Research Project Grant (R01) applications that propose to: (1) conduct evaluation research on obesity-related "natural experiments" (defined here as community and other population-level public policy interventions that may affect diet and physical activity behavior), and/or (2) develop and/or validate relevant community-level measures (instruments and methodologies to assess the food and physical activity environments at the community level). The overarching goal of this FOA is to inform public policy and research relevant to (1) diet and physical activity behavior, and (2) weight and health outcomes of Americans.

Summary: This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) issued by the National Institute of Nursing Research encourages R01 applications to improve health outcomes for women, infants and children, by stimulating interdisciplinary research focused on maternal nutrition and pre-pregnancy obesity. Maternal health significantly impacts not only the mother but also the intrauterine environment, and subsequently fetal development and the health of the newborn.

Call for Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo Abstracts
Do you have new research or a successful program or project you would like to showcase? This is your opportunity to provide insights that lead to action for your colleagues. The Call for Abstracts for the 2013 Food & Nutrition Conference & Expo, October 19-22, in Houston, Texas, is now open.

Submit online by February 21 for either a poster or a Research and Practice Innovation session (10-minute oral presentation). All abstracts are peer-reviewed.
