Minimum Wage Hikes Unaffordable for American Samoa Cannery

 

The parent company of a recently opened tuna cannery in American Samoa says it cannot afford future minimum wage increases.

 

Tri Marine International's Samoa Tuna Processors plant was officially opened in American Samoa in January, and currently employs about 500 people, with the minimum wage for cannery workers set at $4.76.

South Korean Tuna Exports Surge

 

South Korea's tuna exports rose 42.1 per cent on-year in 2014 thanks mainly to more fish caught by local fishing vessels.

 

According to the Korea Customs Service (KCS) data published last week, tuna exports reached 200,000 tons last year, up from 141,000 tons in 2013, reported Yonhap News Agency.

 

Taiwan Fishing Firm Delivers First Load of Tuna Harvest in PNG

A large foreign fishing company has delivered to the shores of Papua New Guinea its first load of certified skipjack tuna, harvested from the Pacific Island Nation (PNA) waters.

 

Fong Chun Formosa Fishery (FSF) Company said its first load of Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified skipjack tuna was delivered to Papua New Guinea for processing on Sunday.
