UH Archaeologists Find 2000-Year-Old Roman Footprint

Rarely do archaeologists literally walk in the footprints of the ancient people they study. But recent excavations by a University of Haifa team of the ruins of a Hellenistic city in the Golan Heights of northern Israel yielded t he 2,000-year-old imprints of Roman soldiers' boots.

The hobnailed boot impressions were left in the still-wet mortar of the fortifications at Hippos, situated just east of the Sea of Galilee, according to an article published earlier this month in Popular Archaeology by Professor Michael Eisenberg of the University of Haifa Archaeology Department.  Read more

Blaming All Your Soda and Beer Drinking on    Those Salty Snacks?   Not So Fast.
In a recent study conducted by Prof. Micah Leshem of the University of Haifa Department of Psychology, , no correlation was found between salt intake and an increased sense of thirst or more drinking of water - "Tavern owners can reduce the amount of salt in their bar snacks without fear of a cutting down their customers' consumption of drinks," says Prof. Leshem.

"Based on the notion that the consumption of salt increases thirst, the concern has arisen that it also leads to an increased consumption of sugary drinks. However," Prof. Leshem reports, "our study found little support for the assumption that salt invariably increases drinking."  Read more
Will Continued Development of Israel's Natural Gas Resources Lead to the "Dutch Disease"?

Continued development of the Tamar & Leviathan gas fields at the current rate, and, in particular, the country's transition to being a significant gas exporter might incur the "Dutch disease" over Israel's economy -- with the economy being over-proportionately based on the export of natural gas, while significantly impairing the competitiveness of other business sectors.

These conclusions are based on preliminary results of a new study conducted at the Natural Resources and Environmental Research Center (NRERC) at the University of Haifa, the findings of which were presented in detail at a conference on "Natural Gas and the Israeli Society," held in late June at the University of Haifa.   Read more

Approximately 30% of the population suffer from fatty liver disease, the commonest liver disease in the Western world. The disease can lead to inflammation and cirrhosis of the liver. A joint study by the University of Haifa and the Tel Aviv Medical Center has found that gym training, and not only aerobic exercises, can help reduce liver fat. Read more.
With Chameleons -- the Eyes Have It
Famed for their ability to change color, chameleons have yet another mind-boggling talent: their eyes appear to swivel completely independently. This means that they can simultaneously track two completely different views of the world, which is quite impressive from our primate perspective.

Gadi Katzir from the University of Haifa explains that this phenomenon is more common than we may realize: many fish and birds also have independently wandering eyes, with each eye connecting to the opposite half of the brain - meaning that the left half of the brain should only know what the right eye is seeing and vice versa.
