Congratulations to our BASEF Winners

This year's Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair was another very successful event, almost 300 projects and over 400 student participants, and the new venue at Mohawk College's David Braley Athletic Centre was a great location for the fair.

As usual, there were lots of very high-calibre projects.  There was also very significant coverage by the Spectator this year, which is terrific exposure for these great students.

At the Award Ceremony, the Chamber Awards were presented by Brian McHattie, who was attending as the representative for City Council.

These projects are the winners of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce Innovation Award:

First Prize: Nicholas Mertin, Hillfield Strathallan College, Grade 8
Project: THE SXSR SIGNATURE RECOGNITION ENGINE
A signature recognition app that uses pressure sensitivity and other new technologies.

Second Prize: Lukas Bauer, Kenji Marshall, Hillfield Strathallan College, Grade 9
Project: Heads up: Attentive Driving Device
Created an innovation that senses and notifies a driver if their attention is not on the road, using face-tracking and motion sensors.

Third Prize: Emanuel Estrada Larios, Grade 10, Bishop Ryan, Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board,
Project: Fold My Clothes
Using electronics and programming to help people in everyday chores.

Roundtable: The Training System is Changing. Have your say.

The way in which workforce training is provided in Canada and Ontario is about to

undergo a dramatic change. The federal government is moving ahead with the Canada Job Grant, a skills training program that aims to give employers a more prominent role in training workers.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities a

nd Essential Skills Ontario, are holding roundtable discussions with businesses across Ontario to determine how training programs, including the Canada Job Grant, can be designed to meet the needs of employers.

This is your opportunity to collaborate with peers in business and government and play a leadership role in advancing solutions to this crucial economic issue. We want you to be at the table for this discussion.
