Entrepreneurship Student Showcase on January 30 
Chamber members are invited to join a panel of judges at the W Booth Entrepreneurship Student Showcase on January 30 and vote for the most promising business start-up idea.

More than a dozen graduate student teams in the engineering entrepreneurship program at McMaster University will compete for a share of $4,000 in prize money to help them develop and launch their start-up company. The winning start-up idea will receive $2,000 and the second place and People's Choice winners $1,000 each.

Groupnotes and AdvanTag will be there to share their secrets to success.
The showcase will also provide a networking opportunity for Chamber members to discuss ideas, exchange know-how and identify resources. Anyone with a technology-based, start-up idea is welcome to participate. The event is being held in the Atrium at McMaster Innovation Park from 4 pm to 8 pm. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free but registration is required.

Member Profile: Ilya Pinassi of Parkway Motors Hamilton

Ilya Pinassi is the Vice President of Parkway Motors Hamilton, a family
owned and operated dealership group that has provided great cars and great
customer service to the Hamilton area for over 30 years. 

Ilya is an active member of the Hamilton community and has served on a
variety of community boards and commitees including the Hamilton Arts
Council, the Hamilton Burlington Automobile Dealers Association and the

Hire Learning Survey 
 

Workforce Planning Hamilton invites 
employers across Hamilton to complete the Hire Learning Survey.  Whether you are a big or small company, a for-profit or not-for-profit, they want to hear from you about your hiring experience and needs.  The Hire Learning Survey is the result of an extensive joint effort to provide employers, job seekers, and community organizations valuable insights into the demand-side of Hamilton's labour market. It is designed to collect information annually from the city's employers on a range of labour issues, such as labour turnover, hard-to-fill positions, recruitment difficulties and any current or future skill shortages.

Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Seeks Volunteer Community Member to Serve on its Audit Committee

 

The Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board is seeking community members with financial expertise and business knowledge to serve on its audit committee for a three-year term effective January 2014.

 

The audit committee will be comprised of three Trustees and two independent members drawn from the community at large. The primary role of the audit committee is to assist the board of trustees in fulfilling its duties related to governance and oversight.  

 

The duties of the audit committee fall under the

following key areas: the financial reporting process, internal control framework, risk management practices, performance and function of the board's internal and external auditors and the board's compliance with its obligations under legislation. The Committee meets at least 3 times a year, plus ad hoc meetings as required. A formal training course will be provided to all committee members to clarify roles and responsibilities of audit committees for the school board sector.

 

Candidate Eligibility:

* Applicants must have sufficient accounting, senior financial management or legal expertise to understand public sector accounting and auditing standards.

* The applicant must not be a current employee or officer of the board or of any other district school board or school authority.

* The applicant must not have a parent, child or spouse currently employed by the board.

Change Labs for Better Lives and a Stronger Hamilton
Jerry Koh from the MaRS Solution Lab and Geraldine Cahill from Social Innovation Generation ("SIG") will present the concept of Change Labs and their potential in supporting Hamilton's own process of renewal. Jerry and Geraldine will discuss what change labs are doing around the world and provide ideas for what change labs can do in Hamilton. This a follow-up to last October's Seeing Hamilton: When best is possible.
This event is hosted by the Innovation and Technology Committee of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce.

Featuring Brian Kon, Accessibility Expert


Brian is one of North America's leading experts on accessibility. Brian is part of the disability community with a minority heritage and comes from a family affected by various disabilities. 

 

Brian uses his personal experiences in training to engage his audience. He has researched consumer products and services from the user's perspective. He has developed training tools specifically on the AODA Customer Service Standard as well as being one of its original authors. Plus, he has developed evaluation methods for assessing the accessibility of the built environment while being cognizant that this is a changing area that has yet to be settled in the Province. 

 

Brian sat on the AODA Customer Service Standard Committee and helped author the Standard that became the first of five Standards under the Act. Subsequent to working on the Customer Service Standard on behalf of the Province, he was recruited to assist the Retail Council of Canada create an online training tool that would be used across Canada to support retailers in meeting the needs of consumers with disabilities.

The Bay Area Leadership Program - Ideas Into action was created by Volunteer Hamilton in support of observable trends in the Hamilton community related to engagement and social innovation. Collective leadership is an emergent (ten years) leadership theory and practice with a transferrable competencies required in every volunteer, academic and professional environment. The collective leadership style challenges the status quo, is based on possibility thinking, and seeks to reveal the opportunity in every situation.
