Renewal Projects Pay Off
As the number of adaptive reuse projects continues to grow across Hamilton, market watchers are asking: Does heritage renewal provide a sufficient return on investment? This question was front and centre at the Economics of Heritage Preservation, an invitation-only event held last week at the Hamilton Club. It was organized by the Heritage Hamilton Foundation and Friends of Auchmar in cooperation with Renew Hamilton, an initiative of the Hamilton Chamber.
The lead off presentation by Dr. Robert Shipley, a heritage specialist at the University of Waterloo, offered encouraging news for would-be investors. His pan-Ontario research, captured in a study titled the Lazarus Effect, shows that long-term financial returns from adaptive reuse projects are routinely higher than new builds. He calls it the "renewal premium" arising from pent up market demand for cool spaces, such as warehouse, church and factory conversions. The evening was moderated by urbanist Martinus Geleynse and featured six other speakers representing a variety of heritage renewal projects in communities ranging from Toronto and Ottawa to London and Grimsby. Organizers are exploring a follow up event that will dig deeper into the economics of renewal.

Member Profile: Amy Ballinger,
Moksha Yoga Hamilton
Amy has devoted the last decade of her life to learning, practicing and sharing yoga. She has travelled to many different countries to study and teach yoga, and has had the privilege of training with some of the world's most renowned Instructors. In 2007 she co-founded Moksha Yoga in Winnipeg, and since then has been part of the growth of the Moksha Yoga across Canada and the United states. At the end of 2010, she opened Moksha Yoga Hamilton in Dundas and plans to open another location in Stoney Creek in the near future. Amy's favourite thing about living in this region is the access to trails and outdoor activities. She believes that yoga is the perfect compliment to all other sports and activities (like running, biking, golfing, etc) so that you can continue to enjoy them (and excel at them!) injury-free for many years to come. She also believes that yoga is necessary for those who have busy and stressful lives, as it helps to reduce stress, calm the nervous system and improve mental clarity. Moksha Yoga Hamilton offers hot yoga classes in a variety of styles, including specialty classes for stress reduction, yoga for runners, and yoga classes that incorporate light free weights. Classes are open to everyone (even those brand new to yoga!) because Amy firmly believes that the benefits of yoga are accessible to all, and that the benefits of practicing yoga are limitless! You just have to try it for yourself to find out!

Experiential Learning; A Relevant Learning Approach to Organization The Human Resources Committee invites you to join them for their next meeting on Wednesday, December 4 at 8:00 a.m. at McMaster Innovation Park (175 Longwood Road South). The guest speaker will be Mickey Walker of Mickey Walker Consulting, who will discuss Experiential Learning:
Experiential learning is often mis-labelled as merely an energizer, a game or an ice-breaker. However, experiential learning comes in many forms and when it's done well - can deepen organizational awareness, helping leaders make connections that often go unexplored or unnoticed. By examining a metaphor we will experience the relevancy of experiential learning as a valuable learning approach. This will be an interactive session. Please let Whitney know you will be attending: w.simmons@hamiltonchamber.ca.
