"It's a dream come true," said REfficient CEO Stephanie McLarty while pointing out features of her company's new headquarters in the historic Hamilton Port Authority building at the foot of James Street North. This upward move speaks volumes of the young company's growth prospects as a leading technology seller and its long-term commitment to our city. YEP Roundtable: Closing the Deal
One of the major keys to ensuring you close that sale for your company is having the right attitude. If you go into the meeting with the wrong attitude your client will know it and it will become that much harder to convince them to buy your products or services. That was one of the pieces of advice delivered by Lisa von Massow, Principal and Owner of Sandler Training & Endurance Partners Inc. at the latest YEP Roundtable at the Seedworks Urban Offices.
She added that salespeople also need to prepare themselves for rejection and not to take that rejection personally. Von Massow said that salespeople should not confuse themselves as an individual with their sales role and not take rejection personally.
Von Massow's co-speaker, Joe Popkey, a Commercial Account Manager with RBC and YEP Treasurer, also said that another key to keeping a positive attitude is to have a plan. You need to set daily, weekly and monthly quotas for yourself and schedule meetings a week or two ahead in order to reduce the stress of trying to find clients and meetings at the last minute.
Popkey also said that researching and getting to know your client is also key. You need to know enough about your client to target your services to their specific needs. Von Massow said that salespeople need to remember that not everyone is a potential customer and to target the ones that are best suited to your services.
Popkey also said that you need to get all the decision makers there at the same time to make it easier for everyone's questions to be answered. However, Popkey said that you should never rush the sale. You need to take people through the process step-by-step even if it takes multiple meetings.
Von Massow and Popkey recommend that salespeople should always ask for introductions or referrals and to not be afraid to make the request before the sale is completed. Von Massow said that the most successful salespeople have a weekly "ask for an introduction" quota. This system often results in new sales leads and helps them keep that positive attitude they need to succeed.

Experiential Learning; A Relevant Learning Approach to Organization The Human Resources Committee invites you to join them for their next meeting on Wednesday, December 4 at 8:00 a.m. at McMaster Innovation Park (175 Longwood Road South). The guest speaker will be Mickey Walker of Mickey Walker Consulting, who will discuss Experiential Learning:
Experiential learning is often mis-labelled as merely an energizer, a game or an ice-breaker. However, experiential learning comes in many forms and when it's done well - can deepen organizational awareness, helping leaders make connections that often go unexplored or unnoticed. By examining a metaphor we will experience the relevancy of experiential learning as a valuable learning approach. This will be an interactive session. Please let Whitney know you will be attending: [email protected].
