Chamber Aids Innovative Employment Project

Hamilton Chamber members and staff helped the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and its partners advance the design of a proposed online information system intended to boost labour market participation. The Community Employment Pilot project is examining the feasibility of mapping determinants of unemployment - economic, cultural and social among others - at the local level.  The system, now being developed in Hamilton and three other pilot communities, would enable neighbourhood organizations and practitioners to target services to high-need Ontarians who face complex challenges to obtaining employment. "In Hamilton, this system would help create and deploy tailored-made career education and employment supports at the neighbourhood level," said Chamber participant Richard Allen. "It would be an added resource for existing neighbourhood development initiatives focused on improving access to opportunity for all citizens." This innovative project also holds promise for Chamber members reliant on local talent. Said Allen: "We all benefit from the development of a deep and reliable labour market."  Phase one consultations have wrapped up and the Ministry is now reviewing requirements going forward, including web-based technologies and cost effective sources of local labour market information.  Look for an update here later this year.

$8M Federal-Provincial Infrastructure Investment for Cargo Development at Hamilton International Airport

This January, the Federal and Ontario governments joined with Hamilton's Municipal Government and TradePort International Corporation to announce a $12M infrastructure investment for cargo development at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport, the third largest cargo airport in Canada.

This investment will develop on-site infrastructure to expand cargo operations at the airport, creating jobs and driving economic development for the City of Hamilton and greater region.

John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport and its partners are responsible for over 2,000 direct and indirect jobs and over $21 million in federal and provincial taxes each year.

It is estimated that this project will add 50 immediate jobs through the infrastructure development phase, and once construction has been completed it is expected over 400 jobs will be generated through direct and indirect economic activity.
