YEP Roundtable with Councillor McHattie
The City is Listening- by Rachael Williams
City Councillor Brian McHattie says young entrepreneurs and professionals are keys to the future of Hamilton - and their voices need to be heard.
On September 16, McHattie attentively listened to those voices at a YEP roundtable at Ora in Hess Village. The focus was municipal politics. McHattie spoke about his goals for the city and responded to feedback from young professionals.
"The young professional movement wasn't around at the time that the city was establishing their grand plans, like the Vision 2020 concept," said McHattie. "Council hopes to fashion a new vision that will be based on your ideas."
McHattie announced his decision to run for Mayor in the 2014 election. After three terms on city council, he sees Hamilton in need of some major changes.
"We've got to recognize we are at a turning point...we need to find a way to make this city richer, more vibrant and attract more investment," said McHattie.
The young professionals provided McHattie with suggestions including a youth employment strategy, investment in small business, advancement of two-way streets, more garbage cans and increased opportunities for young people to enact change.
Kevin Huynh, Vice-Chair of YEP, asked for renewed emphasis on Barton Street. Joe Popkey, Treasurer of YEP, suggested an increased emphasis on manufacturing jobs to fix the city's poverty crisis.
McHattie admits that a stronger relationship needs to be forged at City Hall. The Mayor and city councillors need to work together to turn ideas into action.
"I think Hamilton is succeeding in spite of itself...we need a city council that has a strong government relation strategy at every level," he said.
McHattie's major goals include a greater linkage of downtown and the Waterfront, advancement of light rail transit, the complete streets initiative and investment in arts and new businesses.
