Community Supported Art. Buy Local Gets Creative.
Community Supported Art (CSA) is intended to support local artists in the creation of new work, to establish relationships between artists and art lovers, and to launch an exciting new model of art distribution. Modelled on the concept of community-supported agriculture, which allows people to purchase a share of the local harvest of fruits and vegetables, CSA enables people to purchase a share of their city's "creative harvest," and proudly build collections of local art at an accessible price point.
Hamilton-based art service organization CoBALT Connects is brining CSA to the Hamilton-Burlington community, following the example of more than 30 American cities which have successfully adopted Community Supported Art programs. This is the first program of its kind to launch north of the border.
Four curators were selected to take on the task of each curating a CSA "share." The curators are among the most respected in their fields, and each brings his or her own tastes, specialties, and expertise to the program. The 2013 curatorial panel includes Melissa Bennett (Art Gallery of Hamilton), Ihor Holubizky (McMaster Museum of Art), Andrew Hunter (Art Gallery of Ontario), and
Emma Quin (Ontario Crafts Council). The program culminates with a "pickup party" in December 2013. Visit communitysupportedart.ca for more information, and to purchase a share from the limited quantities available.
