Welcome Huzaifa!
The Hamilton Chamber would like to welcome our new Policy Analyst, Huzaifa Saeed.
Huzaifa is a recent graduate of McMaster University with a Honours BA in Political Science and Sociology. In his past life, he was heavily involved with all facets of student life at McMaster, holding over thirty volunteer and part time leadership positions; culminating in a stint last year as the Vice President Education of the McMaster Students Union representing over 20,000 students at all levels of government. While he only transplanted to Hamilton five years ago, his experiences and personal values made him fall in love with Hamilton, making it his new home.
From working part time jobs all over the city, interacting with community stakeholders and citizens as a student representative and working on municipal policy issues with the MSU he began to develop and understanding of the socioeconomic structure of the city, some of the challenges associated with it, and potential solutions. Some of these areas of interest include Youth Retention, Innovation & Knowledge Clusters, Startup Ecosystem and Economic Development.
The Chamber of Commerce is a perfect fit for him to help build Hamilton into a city of the future through the realization of membership goals and priorities.

Mikelsons is a long-time resident of Hamilton, who is very committed and involved in the Francophone community. Originally from New Brunswick, but residing in Hamilton since 1960, Ms. Mikelsons was instrumental in the move of Collège Boréal to its new downtown location - a very beneficial initiative for the College, with the number of programs and students increasing since the move to the Standard Life Building. Claudette Mikelsons is also responsible for various programs and services offered at Collège Boréal in Hamilton, such as French as a Second Language. Collège Boréal offers corporate training in French language courses, which are available on site at the employers' place of business. Clients vary from small businesses to large companies and government agencies. Other local services supervised by Ms. Mikelsons: - ACE (Accès Carrière Études): Grade 12 equivalency offered free of charge and funded by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities
- Employment OPTIONS Emploi: Employment services for job seekers and employers looking for qualified skilled workforce.
- LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada): a program funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada for permanent residents. A Francophone childminding centre is also available on site for students registered in this program.
- OSLT (Occupation Specific Language Training) for immigrant professionals in the healthcare field, entrepreneurship and sales. This program funded by Colleges Ontario and Citizenship and Immigration Canada is free of charge to immigrants who meet eligibility criteria.
"The key to Collège Boréal' success is its daily commitment to offer relevant and valuable services to its diverse clientele," says Claudette Mikelsons. "Excellence, expertise and community work is a signature that we are proud of. Our significant growth is certainly the result of our commitment to excellence and our involvement in our community. We take pride in being the Francophone community college in Hamilton."

CareGo Develops New Automated Kiosk
CareGo, a supply chain logistics company known for creating smarter ways to move and store goods, has developed an automated check-in kiosk for truckers arriving at its main steel storage facility in Hamilton, Ontario.
The kiosk resembles an automated teller machine. A truck driver picking up or delivering a shipment at the Longwood Road facility simply keys in a reservation number at the kiosk, instead of walking to the customer service office to have the order processed manually.
"Successful supply chain management is all about making the process work faster and better to reduce costs for clients," says Walter Krancevic, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at CareGo. "With automated check-in, we can process two more trucks per hour, which is a 25 per cent increase."
Krancevic said truck carriers like the new system because drivers spend less time waiting. Kiosk data is also linked to customer web portals so a company knows exactly when its product is delivered or picked up.
CareGo developed the kiosk to improve efficiency at its own facility but will also sell the system to others. "In fact, even before we finished our own, we promised one to a major steel client," Krancevic said.
The company's Longwood Road facility stores steel coils, pipe, bar and plate for clients across North America and is Canada's largest steel transload facility, with a CP rail line running right through the warehouse.
