Pier 8 on the Harbour is the next opportunity as Hamilton's revival gathers more momentum On Monday night, Waterfront Trust Executive Director Werner Plessl, and Chris Phillps, senior advisor in the City's Planning and Economic Development department, told the Hamilton Chamber's Young Entrepreneurs & Professionals (YEP) Divison that the transfer of the Pier 8 lands (the area west of the HMCS Haida to the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club) from the Harbour Commissioners to the City is a unique opportunity to reconnect Hamiltonians to our waterfront and to build the residential and commercial developments to drive economic development and long-term prosperity for Hamilton. Phillps and Plessl were the guests at this month's YEP Roundtable, an event which provides the opportunity for young professionals to meet with more established members of the business community in an informal setting. They presented a comprehensive history of the waterfront, the background of negotiations between the City and Harbour Commission, and some of the visions for the waterfront. The Waterfront Trust operates numerous attractions, including the Williams Fresh Café franchise at Pier 8 on the waterfront, the Discovery Centre, the tour boats The Hamiltonian and The Harbour Queen, the waterfront trolley, Scoops Ice Cream, the fishing derby, and the Tall Ships event. Plessl spoke of the passion that drives his work at the Waterfront Trust - noting that he and his twin brother both hold civil engineering degrees. As the waterfront further develops, he said, it will help to anchor an expanding business corridor connecting the Downtown to the waterfront with James Street as the primary connector. The work that he and others have done so far is invaluable to all of the estimated one million visitors per annum who come to walk, play, fish, or eat at the waterfront in Hamilton. During a lively Q&A session, YEP members asked about how the plans will fit into a vision of the waterfront for everyone. As a final question from the YEP Chair, Derek Doyle, Phillips was asked for a lasting piece of advice. He referenced the new McMaster family health campus and noted that all parties involved have been cooperating admirably. "It's important for everyone to work in partnership to build a better Hamilton," he said. - article by Elisabeth Chernichenko, YEP Division
