Welcome Keanin!

Board and staff at the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce would like to welcome our new President and CEO, Keanin Loomis.

Keanin comes to us from his position as the Chief Operating Officer of the Innovation Factory, located at McMaster Innovation Park.  A graduate of the University of Waterloo and College of William & Mary School of Law, he practiced law in Washington, DC before moving to Hamilton in September 2009.

Keanin will be focusing on certain priorities, including the five policy priorites from the 2012 Economic Summit (transportation, advanced manufacturing, health sciences, education and the creative industries), and developing the Chamber's public policy positions.
Renew Hamilton in the Community

The Renew Hamilton Project - an initiative of the Hamilton Chamber - continues to document the story of regeneration occurring in downtown Hamilton and adjacent neighbourhoods. The goal is to promote the vision of a revitalized urban centre that contributes to making Hamilton one of Canada's top midsize cities.  Last week we interviewed Julian Smith (pictured above), executive director of Willowbank, an independent educational institution located in Queenston, Ontario that offers a seamless integration of academic and hands-on training in the heritage conservation field.  Smith was in town to present a lecture at The Pearl Company. He talked about the importance of preserving our "shared cultural landscapes" - the tangible and intangible assets that define Hamilton as a unique and special place - and the need for resident-led community planning. These are among the actions that help attract people and investment in the modern economy.  CLICK HERE to listen to the full lecture

People Make Places Training Session

Gil Penalosa, executive director of 8 to 80 Cities, was a big hit at last month's Hamilton Economic Summit.  His core message - we need to create walkable cities that meet the needs of citizens and visitors of all ages - resonated with delegates eager to see Hamilton become a leading "people first" community.

Want to take the next step and get actively involved in reimagining local parks and public spaces?  Plan to attend the People Make Places Training Session hosted by 8 to 80 Cities in Toronto on July 19.  It'll offer fun, hands-on learning and practical tactics that can be easily applied in any neighbourhood or business improvement area.
