Chamber announces new President and CEO

The Board of Directors of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce is pleased to announce that it has hired Keanin Loomis as its new President and CEO. He will be taking over from Interim President and CEO, Richard Koroscil, on June 3.

Loomis, 38, is a graduate of the University of Waterloo and The College of William & Mary School of Law in Williamsburg, VA. He practiced law at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, LLP in Washington, DC before moving to Hamilton in September 2009.  He was instrumental in the founding of Innovation Factory, located at McMaster Innovation Park, and serves as its Chief Operating Officer.  He has been very active with the Chamber of Commerce, serving for the last three years on the Hamilton Economic Summit Advisory Committee and the last two years as the Chair of its Innovation and Technology Committee.

"Keanin brings to the table a range of experiences and a great knowledge of the Chamber's operations and membership.  He has forged a broad network and is highly respected in the city.  We were most impressed with his deep understanding of everything that is going on in the community," said Louise Dompierre, Chair of the Chamber Board of Directors and President and CEO of the Art Gallery of Hamilton.  "Additionally, because of his energy and vision, we also get an individual who will continue to provide dynamic leadership on behalf of Hamilton's business community."

"I am truly humbled by the Board's confidence and am privileged to lead this distinguished institution at this very moment, when Hamilton's future has never been brighter," commented Loomis. "David is a good friend of mine and had the organization heading in an exciting direction.  I look forward to working with all the Chamber's members and stakeholders to pick up where he left off and continue to lead this organization as a pillar in this great community."

Richard Koroscil the Chambers Interim President said "I am delighted to be handing over the reins of the Chamber leadership to Keanin, he will bring a new energy and innovative thinking to the Chamber and to our community.  He has and will continue to be a strong community builder in this new role."

Loomis will be playing a role in next week's Hamilton Economic Summit, moderating a panel of young professionals talking about innovation and the art of the possible.  The event is happening on May 9th at the Careport Centre at McMaster Innovation Park.  More information on the summit can be found at hamiltoneconomicsummit.ca.

Emerging Stronger? What Ontario Budget 2013 Means for Business
The OCC has released their discussion of the 2013 budget.  Read more here.

Summary:
Overall, the Budget is a mixed bag. Some measures will improve our overall competitiveness. These measures include:
  •     holding the line on Corporate Income Tax rates;
  •     extending the Capital Cost Allowance for Manufacturers;
  •     making progress on Pooled Registered Pension Plans (PRPPs); and,
  •     implementing new investments in transportation infrastructure.
Some measures are disappointing:
  •     there is still no clear plan on how government will cut costs and meet rising demand for services;
  •     government is interfering in auto insurance;
  •     and, nothing addresses the government's exposure to an inevitable hike in interest rates.
The bottom line? The plan for long-term transformation and spending constraint is unclear.

Renew Hamilton Returns to Economic Summit

The Renew Hamilton Project - an initiative of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce - will perform an important role at the sixth annual Hamilton Economic Summit (HES) on May 9.

"It's a partnership that's grown over time," said project director Richard Allen.  "We're an outcome of previous summits that's expected to help advance urban renewal as a major component of Hamilton's economic future.  So it's essential to keep summit delegates informed and invested."

At this year's summit, Renew Hamilton will host an hour long presentation titled People First: A Downtown Hamilton for All.  The goal is to share evidence of the economic benefits derived from creating a human-centred downtown that responds to the complementary needs and interests of multiple stakeholders, including residents, workers, business owners, students and visitors at all stages of life.

"A people first downtown attracts investment and produces an upward spiral of prosperity," said Allen, emphasizing the importance of intensification, complete streets, light rail transit, culture and the adaptive reuse of existing buildings. "Downtown Hamilton is clearly moving in this direction and reaping early rewards.  It's critical that we stay the course and put people first in all our urban design decisions."

The Renew Hamilton presentation will kick off with a talk by Gil Penalosa, executive director of 8-80 Cities, a world leading not for profit organization devoted to promoting urban environments that function for people of all ages. This will set the stage for a discussion featuring panelists Le'Ann Seely, City of Hamilton; Scott Warren, Global Spectrum; and Leslie Woo, Metrolinx.  The panelists will share examples of local projects that are contributing to a vibrant, multi-generational downtown.

Said Allen: "HES 2013 is devoted to innovation and possibility - we're showing these economic strategies at play in downtown Hamilton and adjacent neighbourhoods."

 Kitchen Fitters is promoting Hamilton's Ugliest Kitchen Contest
on their Facebook page. Like the page, post your ugly kitchen photo and tell your friends to 'like' the page and then your picture. You could win a refaced kitchen worth up to $5000. Open from April 8th - June 8th.
WHAT IS A REFACED KITCHEN? A kitchen that requires new cabinet doors, hinges, handles, new boxes and additional moldings. Pick your style, your colour and voila, you have a 'new' kitchen.
WHAT REFACING IS NOT: Tearing out your old cabinets and replacing them with New cabinets. That's a NEW kitchen. NOT a refaced kitchen.

For more information on the company and the contest, visit www.kitchenfitters.ca.
