Casino Survey
Hamilton Chamber members would have received an email on January 30 with the Chamber's casino survey. The survey will close effective end of day this Friday February 15. It is important that we receive as high a response rate as possible - the Hamilton Chamber has not yet taken a position on the casino. We need to hear from a large majority of our members on this issue so we can make an informed decision on whether we can take a position or present information to City Council on behalf of our members. Thank you for taking the time to complete the survey. If you did not receive an email as a Chamber member, please contact Whitney at [email protected] or 905-522-1151 ext. 100.
Also, tonight (Wednesday February 13, 5-6pm at the Waterfront Centre) the Hamilton Chamber will be hosting a meeting for our Chamber members only. We will discuss the casino issue and have an opportunity to dialogue together as a membership. RSVP to Whitney at [email protected]. |

Chamber hosted Mayor Bratina on February 5 for a breakfast session with members
Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina addressed the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce on February 5, 2013 at an event sponsored by Union Gas (access an unedited 30 minute audio recording below). The Mayor spoke on a number of business topics related to progress and prosperity in the City of Hamilton. On the subject of revitalizing downtown Hamilton and adjacent neighbourhoods (the focus of The Renew Hamilton Project), Mayor Bratina provided the following key comments: * Continued economic growth in downtown Hamilton is key to a sustainable city - in recent years, downtown Hamilton has added approximately $1 million in new tax revenue * Land values in downtown Hamilton continue to trend upward at a remarkable rate - in some cases three to five fold * Hamilton issued a record breaking $1.5 billion in building permits in 2012, including a growing number of projects in downtown Hamilton * All day, two way Go train service between Hamilton and Toronto is a critical component of our city's economic future * People walking to work in downtown Hamilton is the 'ultimate congestion buster' * Additional revenues are required to realize a light rail transit system servicing downtown Hamilton - the Mayor is proposing a 1% increase to the provincial sales tax with a portion going to Hamilton to fund infrastructure costs, including LRT * The decision to support a casino in downtown Hamilton needs to be based on calculating the net benefits to the city through weighing the social costs against new revenue and city building opportunities * Cultural activities and 'boutique' developments do not generate sufficient employment and municipal tax revenues needed to revitalize downtown Hamilton - the Mayor believes that significant urban renewal requires large scale, big budget developments * The new McMaster University Downtown Health Campus (now under construction at Main and Bay) will have a significant impact on the core * Continued attention needs to be given to increasing the economic value of the north side of King Street East near Gore Park - this area generates a fraction of the taxes provided by enterprises west of James Street * Effort needs to be given to creating more living wage jobs in the James Street North area for residents in the adjacent Beasley neighbourhood Mayor Bratina pointed to examples of innovative renewal projects in downtown Hamilton, including the adaptive reuse of the former red brick federal building at Main and Caroline (a Vrancor project). New Corporate Partner Logo Banner debuts at 2013 Events.
The Chamber has created a Corporate Partner Logo banner that has been displayed at all the Chamber events since January. Throughout the year, the Chamber hosts 35-40 signature events such as the Outstanding Business Achievement Awards, President's Golf Tournament, Economic Forecast/President's Panel and many more. In total the Chamber hosts on average 50-60 events per year. This banner would be displayed at those events.
Due to its popularity, we are creating a second banner. Any member who wishes their logo to be included for this year long initiative, can contact Patricia Boulton at Cell: 905-818-1173 or e-mail [email protected] for details and pricing.
