Tips for mobile computing from Chamber member Factor(e)

(excerpted from presentation at the Chamber on December 10 by Adrian Duyzer, Partner, Factor(e))

The mobile world creates risk and opportunities for Hamilton's businesses.

The biggest risk is ignoring mobile completely and thereby missing out on the current - and prospective - customers to whom it is increasingly important.  Companies that move slowly risk losing touch with people who are mobile-oriented, especially young people whose primary computer is often a smartphone.

Companies are also vulnerable to changing consumer behaviour, such as the practice of treating physical retail locations as showrooms while actual purchases are made online from major e-commerce companies.  Small retail has long feared Walmart, but their biggest threat is Amazon.

But mobile brings with it many opportunities.  Companies can use it to disrupt industries, as Uber is disrupting the taxi industry.  Streamlining business operations using internal apps cuts costs and creates efficiencies.  And giving your customers a superior mobile experience improves customer loyalty.

There are many possible directions and many new technologies to consider, which can create a sense of panic, but don't worry: basic human nature is still the same, and unless your specific product or service has been made obsolete by mobile technology, your value proposition can thrive in the mobile world.  But you do need a strategy.

Art Gallery of Hamilton Shops

For the perfect holiday gifts

AGH Shops

The Art Gallery of Hamilton's Design Annex opened to much acclaim earlier this year, bringing a new wave of modern design to the city and receiving extensive media coverage, such as the spread in this month's new Our Homes Hamilton magazine. Alongside the Shop at AGH and the Art Rental + Sales programme, the Art + Design Store at the AGH Design Annex offers unique, artist-inspired personal and corporate gift selections from Canadian designers (a number of whom are from the Hamilton area) that are perfect for holiday giving. All purchases support Educational programming at the AGH.

Look out for the AGH Shops flyer in our upcoming Chamber mailing. You can also view it online here
AGH Shops Holiday 2012.

Chamber of Commerce Members receive 10% off* at both the Shop At AGH and the AGH Design Annex Art + Design Store until December 31, 2012.

*Discount does not apply to Art Rental + Sales, catalogues or sale items.
