Hamilton Chamber thanks KPMG for presenting Health Sciences Forum

 

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce would like to thank KPMG LLP (KPMG) for presenting the Health Sciences Forum, last Thursday November 1. Over 120 guests from the private and public sectors met to: 
  • Build greater awareness of Hamilton's robust health sciences sector, its role in local and larger economies, and the business opportunities it brings to Hamilton
  • Explore deliverables that resulted from the last Hamilton Economic Summit
  • Position Hamilton as a leader in health sciences and as an incubator for new business opportunities

We would like to thank moderator Mark Walton as well as panelists Janet Davidson, Dr. Bill Orovan, Dr. Kevin Smith and Murray Martin for their insights.  At the Forum, we launched a new video highlighting Hamilton's health sciences sector.  We would like to acknowledge Double Barrel Studios for their work on the video as well as Hamilton Economic Development and KPMG for contributing to the production.  The video is now available as are the presentations from the forum.   


 
Economic Forecast Panel announced for December 3 event
 
We are pleased to present the 2013 Economic Forecast, which will be hosted at LIUNA Station on Monday December 3, 2012, beginning with a reception at 5pm followed by dinner at 6pm. 
 
The Forecast will cover topics ranging from 2013 economic projections for Hamilton, Ontario and Canada, infrastructure investments, cultural industries including an overview from Global Spectrum who are taking over the operations of Copps Coliseum and Hamilton Place in 2013 and IBM Canada's smart cities initiative.  We have a tremendous line-up of speakers including:

Bruce Kuwabara Honoured

 

Architect Bruce Kuwabara, who was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada earlier this year, was honoured at the Conversations with Christopher Hume and Guests event held on October 30 at Liuna Station.

Mr. Kuwabara was born and raised in Hamilton, and was the lead design architect for the redevelopment of the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

The tribute was led by the Hamilton/Burlington Society of Architects and included remarks by society member Ken Coit, an urban design and heritage specialist with the City of Hamilton.  Ken reflected on Mr. Kuwabara's passion for community building, creativity and support for the next generation of Canadian architects.

Rebecca Beatty, vice chair of the HBSA and Louise Dompierre, chair of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, presented Mr. Kuwabara with a framed poster created by Graham Crawford of the HIStory + HERitage storefront museum on James Street North in downtown Hamilton.

Hamilton Hive Hits Provincial Stage

 
Ryan Moran, Chair of Hamilton Hive - an umbrella organization representing young professional groups across our city - participated on a next generation leadership panel that last night opened the ninth annual Ontario Economic Summit in Niagara-on-the-Lake.  The discussion was moderated by John Tory, Chair of Toronto-based CivicAction and focused on exploring the role young leaders play in helping Ontario emerge stronger.  Moran emphasized Hamilton Hive's strategic ties to the Hamilton Chamber and a shared commitment to advancing small business, entrepreneurship and collaboration.  "It's ok to feel uncomfortable," he said, referring to the process of creating innovative start ups and driving community change.  The other panelists were Emilie Cushman, Kira Talent; Andrew Graham, Emerging Leaders Network; Kunal Gupta, Polar Mobile; Michael Nitz, SHIFT; and Jane Wu, Penyo Pal. The summit, which is organized by the Ontario Chamber of Commerce and runs November 6-8, has attracted a capacity gathering of 200 delegates, including Hamilton Chamber President and CEO David Adames, and board members Rami Reda and Joe Accardi.

The Hamilton Chamber of Commerce will host FREE Networking and Information Session on Nov 21, 2012 at 9:00 am.
 
The information session will cover free services available for local employers through the following two programs:
 
1- Free Workplace ESL classes
2- Employer wage subsidies
 
Senior representatives from community partners and service providers will be available to provide detailed information and to answer your questions.
 
Local businesses from Manufacturing and Healthcare industries are encouraged to attend this event and learn about other benefits including free HR services.

Tribute to the Honourable Lincoln Alexander:

 

The Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra will perform a concert to honour the remarkable life of the late Lincoln Alexander on Tuesday, November 20th.   The Lincoln Alexander Memorial Concert will be held in the Virtue-Fitzgerald Centre for the Arts at Hillfield Strathallan College at 7:30 p.m.

 

"Linc was one of our biggest fans.  He loved jazz, and was always very supportive of the band.  In fact, for our Corktown performances, Linc pretty much had his own table," said conductor and saxophonist, Darcy Hepner,

 

"For the November 20th performance we are programming some of Linc's most requested, favorite music and our guest vocalist will be the dynamic Sophia Perlman," Mr. Hepner continued.

 

The Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra is one of Canada's premiere jazz ensembles and is an assembly of a veritable who's who among Canadian jazz musicians.  For the Lincoln Alexander Memorial Concert the Darcy Hepner Jazz Orchestra will be performing music from the libraries of Thad Jones, Bob Brookmeyer and Henry Mancini as well as a tribute to the Great American Songbook, including selections from the band's recent CD, Blues in Another Minute.  

 

The Lincoln Alexander Memorial Concert is November 20th at the in the Virtue-Fitzgerald Centre for the Arts at Hillfield Strathallan College, 299 Fennell Avenue West, Hamilton. 

 

The performance starts at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets for the special memorial concert are $20 per person, and are available at the door, or at the HSC campus store, phone 905-389-1367 x 112.
