Province of Ontario - Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review 2012

This past Monday, Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan delivered the Province's Economic Outlook and Fiscal Review 2012.  Key highlights from the update included:

* Projected deficit for fiscal 2012-2013: $14.4 billion (down $400 million from original budget forecast)

* The deficit is set to be eliminated by 2017-18, as previously forecast
* Ontario's debt is now $272 billion, up from $257.5 billion last spring
* Ontario's GDP is forecast to grow at:

o 2.0% in 2012
o 1.9% in 2013

o 2.3% in 2014
o 2.4% in 2015

The Ontario Chamber of Commerce provided some comments about the update including:

* Ontario's large debt ($272 billion) and deficit ($14.4 billion) threaten our economic recovery

* We urge the government to return to fiscal balance
* In spite of the challenges posed by its minority status in the legislature, the government must pursue aggressive cost-cutting measures. This includes a much-needed broader public sector wage freeze
* Returning to fiscal health is only half the battle. The government must also find creative ways to grow the economy.

Federal Marine Terminals (FMT) received the inaugural Environmental Recognition Award from the Hamilton Port Authority (HPA)
This annual award was created to recognize and reward a Hamilton port partner's contributions to respecting and protecting the natural environment.

"Federal Marine Terminals has the largest footprint of any tenant on port property, and the company is a leader when it comes to environmental protection," noted Bruce Wood, HPA President and CEO. "Environmental stewardship is central to our mission at the port, and we are always pleased to work with port partners like FMT who share this commitment."

FMT is an active participant in the North American environmental improvement program Green Marine, achieving level 4.3 (out of 5.0) in 2011, in the following areas: greenhouse gases, water and land pollution prevention, and conflicts of use with neighbouring population. The company has a comprehensive environmental policy in place that addresses key aspects of Green Marine, including a stormwater and spills prevention management policy.

The HPA Environmental Recognition Award recognizes environmental leadership by allocating funds to an environmental agency or project, as nominated by the winner. FMT has chosen the Hamilton Air Monitoring Network (HAMN), which since 2003 has been carrying out ambient and point source air quality monitoring in the Hamilton area.
Paul Gourdeau, President of FMT, said: "We are honoured to be the first recipient of this award. As a company, we are continuously looking for new ways to reduce our environmental footprint and have a team at our headquarters dedicated to ensuring we operate our businesses in a sustainable manner. We look forward to allocating the award funds to HAMN, which is an important project because of the role it plays in helping to determine where progress is being made and identifying air quality issues in the Hamilton area."

CareGo - the innovators

CareGo, an international supply chain logistics company based in Hamilton, is expanding its offices to a site in north Burlington.
"We're proud to be a Hamilton success story," says president and CEO Demetrius Tsafaridis. "Earlier this year we expanded operations to England and now we're growing regionally as well."

CareGo's engineering and information technology staff will come together under one roof for the first time at 3600 Dundas Street, Suite 201. "These are the departments that drive innovation for our customers and having them under one roof will be extremely valuable," Tsafaridis said.

The new location will include executive meeting and office space, giving more options for clients and staff traveling from the greater Toronto area. "Our headquarters will remain in Hamilton at Longwood and Aberdeen but the new location is right off the 407, which is more convenient for people coming in from east of Hamilton."

It's a big year for CareGo: In May, Tsafaridis' six related companies in supply chain management and logistics re-branded under one name, CareGo. In June, CareGo finalized a multi-year project to install its automated warehouse technology at the Port of Liverpool. A new web site, www.carego.com, launched earlier this month.

"We're growing - in 2012 we've expanded by 16 people, including some new graduates from Mohawk College and McMaster University," Tsafaridis said. The company has 120 employees.
