Meet the Staff!
We've been introducing you to our staff over the last few months. Here are:
Lacy Gibson
Lacy has been working with the Library for just a few weeks. She is really enjoying her interactions
with the patrons and helping people find what they are looking for. Lacy is married to Chad - for seven years, this month - and they have a 5 year old son named Chace. Their family also includes two dogs, Lula and Doctor.
When not at the Library, Lacy enjoys time with her family; baking, watching movies, and having fun!
Lacy graduated from Greensburg Community High School in 2005. She loves Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and Doctor Who (perhaps, this is where her dog gets its name!)
Regan Horan One of our student pages, Regan has been with the Library for a little over a year. She says that the best part of her job is the people she works with. Regan lives with her aunt and uncle and has seven sisters, ranging in age from 13 - 26 years old. She is a senior at Oldenburg Academy, where she plays basketball and is involved in many clubs. She loves a good book and is a big fan of NCIS.
Kelly Meyer
Kelly has been with the Library since July of 2014. When asked what she likes best about her job, she said, "Definitely, getting to work with the amazing staff we have!"
Kelly likes to spend her free time photographing nature, spending time with some great friends and traveling. She likes to visit different and exotic places, a hobby that she says she rarely gets to enjoy, but loves, nonetheless. Kelly has a cat named Sophie that they took in as a stray seven years ago.
Kelly loves Keith Urban's music and says she could listen to "Raise Em Up" over and over. She also likes a lot of movies but would say that the Little Mermaid, Grease, and Jurassic Park are three of her favorites. Her plan after graduation is to become a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer. Kelly volunteers at the Agape Center and says her favorite quote is
"Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn, or consumed. Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude." Denis Waitley
Andrea Ingmire

Andrea and her family during a recent trip to the Boundary Waters.
|
Andrea is the Library Director and has been since October 2008. When asked to say the best thing about her job, Andrea answered, "I love to know that our Library makes an impact on the people in Decatur County. We strive to make our Library a family friendly environment and to meet the needs of our community. I think we do this well. Also, I enjoy working with other Libraries on projects like Evergreen Indiana and the SAMS (small and medium libraries) division of the Indiana Library Federation. It is rewarding to see what Libraries can do as a whole for the citizens of Indiana.
Andrea admits that she has too many hobbies, "I am an avid DIY-er (I love to make things myself.) So... I cook, I can, I garden, I make cleaning supplies, I craft, I sew, I play with my kids and I am studying herbal-ism. There aren't enough hours in the day for all of my hobbies!"
Andrea is married to Jeremy and they have two children, Orion and Lyra, who attend South Decatur, 3 goats, 11 chickens, 3 dogs, 2 cats and a guinea pig. "No partridge yet, but I do have the pear tree!!" Andrea says that, traditionally, she is a fan of Fantasy books. Her favorite book series (thus far) is 'The Kingkiller Chronicles' by Patrick Rothfuss. "Mr. Rothfuss has been promising us book 3 since 2011...but still no book 3. I can't wait for book 3..." She also loves audiobooks and recently listened to 'Girl on the Train' and 'The Girl with all the Gifts.' Andrea has been a lunch buddy with Big Brothers and Big Sisters for 4 years. She enjoys working on costumes and recently was part of the costume crew for 'Fiddler on the Roof' with Tree County Players.

Did You Ever Wonder... About Cheetahs?
Recently, a cheetah escaped his exhibit at the Indianapolis Zoo, causing a "Code Red" lock down and an extensive evaluation of the facility housing them. In light of this event, here are some interesting cheetah facts!
1. A cheetah can run up to 75 miles per hour!
This is easily twice as fast as the fastest human on Earth today, Usain Bolt, who reached speeds over 27 miles per hour during part of a sprint. When running, cheetahs use their tail to steer, like a rudder for a boat. Cheetahs are the only big cat that can turn in mid-air while sprinting
2. Cheetahs in Asia were once used for hunting, like greyhounds.
Asiatic cheetahs, which are a distinct subspecies from African cheetahs, were once tamed and used as hunting animals, much like greyhounds! Cheetahs once lived all over Asia. Cheetahs rely on an abundance of prey to survive. As their habitat was threatened, they were poached, and their prey diminished, Asiatic cheetahs dwindled in number.
3. Cheetahs are BIG!
Some cheetahs can weight up to 150 pounds and they are also very long. They can measure nearly 5 feet in length from their head to the beginning of their tail. Cheetah's tails can be nearly 3 feet long. Taking these measurements together makes some cheetahs nearly 8 feet long, from their nose to the tip of their tail! Cheetahs can be up to 3 feet tall at the shoulder.
4. Cheetahs Purr Like House Cats
Cheetahs are much larger than your average house cat, but just like happy house cats, cheetahs purr.
When cheetahs are happy, mostly during meetings between cubs and mothers, they will purr. They also make a wide range of other noises from chirping to hissing and growling,
5. Cheetah cubs are very stylish
One very stylish cheetah fact is that cheetah cubs have a row of hair on their back when they are born. This ridge of hair is called a mantle and it's speculated that cheetah cubs are born with this to confuse predators. Scientists think the cheetah cubs' mantle makes them look like honey badgers, which discourages predators. Cheetah cubs need all the protection they can get. While adult cheetahs are not often preyed upon due to their fast speed, larger cats, wild dogs, hyenas, and even eagles often prey upon cheetah cubs!
As a result of this, the mortality rate for cheetah cubs is very high. Cheetah cubs face a 40% mortality rate on average at birth and the mortality rate within certain populations can be up to 90%!
6. Cheetahs have super powers!
One of the special traits that evolution has provided the cheetah with is an incredible circulatory system to fuel its incredible speed. Cheetah's hearts and lungs are much larger than is strictly necessary for their body. When sprinting to catch prey, the cheetah's lungs and heart turn the cheetah into a supercharged and turbo-powered animal on the move!
7. Cheetahs, like other big cats, are carnivores.
They eat a diet made up exclusively of meat. It's the incredible sprinting speed of the cheetah that allows it to catch prey. Some of the animals that cheetahs hunt are quite fast themselves! Gazelle, which are often the prey of cheetahs, can run up to 50 miles per hour, or up to 80 kilometers per hour! Interestingly, cheetahs hunt by day, while most other cats hunt by night.Cheetahs rely on their eyesight as their primary sense for hunting, while other cats have a greater reliance on scent. For cheetahs, it's all about spotting their prey and chasing it down! When a cheetah kills its prey, it usually does so through strangulation. In addition to gazelles, cheetahs hunt impala, hares and other game. Cheetahs will also hunt larger animals, like zebra. When cheetahs hunt larger game, they typically hunt in groups, and typically hunt younger, older, or sick members of the larger animal populations.
8. Male and Female Cheetahs Live Separately
Cheetahs do not live as mating couples. The male groups, or solitary male cheetahs, will mark out a territory that overlaps several female home ranges. Male cheetahs are very territorial and fights over territory often result in severe injury or death.
Female cheetahs form a home range and typically hunt alone, except when teaching their cubs how to hunt. Female home ranges will often overlap, most typically with members of the female cheetah's family. For instance, a female cheetah's home range may overlap with those of her sister and daughter. Cheetahs are caring, affectionate and dedicated mothers. They spend a long time caring for their cubs and teaching them essential survival skills like hunting. Cubs typically stay with their mothers for one and a half to two years.

Pumpkin Spice Muffins
4 eggs
1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
3 cups pumpkin purée (canned is fine)
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 lb. (16 Tbs.) unsalted butter, melted
1-1/4 lb. (4-1/2 cups) all-purpose flour
2 Tbs. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
3 Tbs. ground cinnamon
3 Tbs. ground ginger
Pinch cloves
Pinch white pepper
1-1/2 cups golden raisins
Heat the oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, whisk the eggs, sour cream, pumpkin purée, brown sugar, sugar, and butter. In another bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and pepper. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet, stirring until just mixed. Gently fold in the raisins. Grease and flour a muffin tin (or line it with muffin papers, preferably foil). Scoop about 1/2 cup batter into each tin so that the curve of the batter is even with the rim of the cup. (Refrigerate any extra batter in an airtight container for up to a week.) Bake the muffins in the middle of the oven until firm to the touch and a toothpick inserted into them comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Remove the muffins from the tin when they're cool enough to handle.
