Ybor Chamber Member Spotlight

During the holiday season, it's important to remember those that are less fortunate than ourselves, and one of our Chamber members that does just that, not only at the holidays but all year round, is The Salvation Army. Our branch is located just down the street from the historic district, on the corner of 7th Avenue and Florida Avenue, and serves our local community.

The Salvation Army is known for their holiday Red Kettle and volunteer bell ringers, collecting money for the needy in our communities. But did you know that at the holidays, they also have the Angel Tree program, which is a community partnership effort that makes the holidays brighter for thousands of underprivileged children throughout the Tampa Bay area. A paper angel is created for each eligible child featuring the child's name, age, clothing and shoe sizes, and a need and gift idea. By "adopting" an angel, you agree to purchase the gifts for that child. To find out how you can participate in the Angel Tree project, contact Patty Harris at 813-226-0055.

The Salvation Army serves Hillsborough County 365 days a year. Each day, more than 200 homeless men, women and children call The Salvation Army their home. There are many ways to help support the good works of Tampa's Salvation Army. To learn how you can help, visit their website at www.uss.salvationarmy.org//uss/www_uss_tampa.nsf .

Chairman's Message

Hello Ybor,

Ybor is humming on all cylinders. I can't even keep up with everything going on but it's all good stuff. We had a great Guavaween and the district was full of guests all day long. Melissa and the kids joined me first thing in the morning and we were able to help Jill Wax and her team finish setting up for the Pumpkin Patch. They had a great time decorating their own personal pumpkin and then walking up and down 7th Avenue trick or treating. It was great to see so many families walking the streets and creating positive memories of the Historic District with their children.

The Guavaween Concert in Centro Ybor was great. Things got even better as we transitioned into the Costume Contest. We had tons of entries and I was blown away when I looked up from backstage and saw how full Centro Ybor was. We had guests standing everywhere enjoying the contest. Guavaween is alive and well! The Chamber staff did an outstanding job putting it together and we received lots of positive media, including a #4 listing on top places to celebrate Halloween on AOL.com.

At the beginning of this year, Melissa and I set a goal to run in our first 5k and we were excited to see Richard's Run was going to take place in Ybor. We signed up right after Guavaween and got to participate. It was a great experience and it was once again nice to see Ybor full of families enjoying everything Ybor has to offer.

The next major event taking place for the Chamber will be our annual Fiesta Day that will take place Saturday February 22nd, yes that's in 2014, but when you stop and think about it the event is less than a hundred days away. Check out our website if you would like more information on the event or if you are interested in becoming a sponsor.

Until next time-
David Alvarez
