Guavaween Grows-up at 28
Ybor City ranks Tampa in the Top-Four
Ranked as the "4th best neighborhood" in the country to celebrate Halloween behind Greenwich Village, Beacon Hill and the Vieux Carre' by AOL.Com, Ybor City's Guavaween is not only a great promotion for the Historic Latin Quarter, but also for Tampa.
"It's nice to see Tampa Bay in the company of New York City, Boston and New Orleans," states Tom Keating, President & CEO of the Ybor City Chamber. "Our National Historic Landmark District is the 'heart and soul of Tampa' and an amazing cultural asset."
Regional alt-rock band Scilter did a great job of warming-up the crowd for the Costume Contest hosted by Mama Guava. Held at Centro Ybor for the second year, this year's contest had more entries that at any time in recent history. 2013 winners were:
· Most Creative - King of Pop
· Best in Theme - Aztec Man
· Best Group - Pop Art
· Best Couple - Deep Throat
· Best Political Satire - Obama Care
The Grand Prize of $1,000 went to the "King of Pop - the music lives on." Todd Ramquist of Safety Harbor built a full-size coffin tilled at a 45% angle on wheels. He decorated it with lights and "wore it" with a Michael Jackson mask. The crowd loved it! Best Couple winners, Deep Throat, came in a close second with some of the most gruesome, yet life-like, make-up you have ever seen.
Thanks to our key sponsors Centro Ybor and GTE Financial and to all of our wonderful entertainment venues that make Guavaween - much more than an "ordinary special event." Come celebrate with us in the District any day of the year! Contact the Chamber's Visitor Information Center at www.ybor.org or 813.241.8838 for information on up-coming activities and events.
