Spring is almost here (though our warm weather and pollen would say it's been here for awhile) and that means it's time for soccer! And the Tampa Bay area is blessed to have its own National American Soccer League (NASL) team, the Tampa Bay Rowdies. It's great to have the Rowdies back after playing professional soccer in Tampa from the mid 70's to the early 90's. How many of you remember their slogan "The Rowdies arrrreeee...a kick in the grass!"

As most of you know, the Rowdies are the 2012 NASL Soccer Champions, beating the Minnesota Stars in an over time, penalty kick shootout. The 2013 Regular Season begins Saturday, April 6 and runs through Saturday, November 2. Home games are played at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg and General Admission is only $16.

We were excited to have the Rowdies join us this year for our 66th Annual Fiesta Day. Tampa Bay is rich with professional sports teams and it is great when those teams come out and join the community in celebration.

Soccer has been near and dear to Tom and me ever since our daughters began playing in elementary school. We had years of city soccer leagues, travel soccer teams and of course, high school soccer. Yes, I was a soccer mom and loved every minute of it!

Go Rowdies!

Message From The Chair

ˇHola Ybor!

Last month, Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring, but in my mind, regardless of any predictions, once the month of March hits, it's time for spring! Fiesta Day definitely brought visions of spring with the beautiful weather we had for our 66th celebration. I couldn't have been more content spending the day in Ybor City with my three year old daughter, creating memories that are reminiscent of the one's I have with my parents and grandparents. I can only hope that she will one day carry on this tradition with her own children, creating Fiesta Day memories spanning five generations of our family.

Another one of my favorite Ybor events is right around the corner - Ybor Aficionado Days. In preparation for this two-day event, the Chamber wants you to enter your favorite, original tapas recipe for a chance to win a $500 grand prize!  Four finalists will be selected to prepare their recipe in the Columbia Restaurant's kitchen on April 14th for the Aficionado Days 4th Annual Tapas Cooking Challenge. So... do you think you have what it takes? If so, contact Tom Favata at tfavata@ybor.org - all entries must be received by April 3rd.

If cooking is not quite your thing, Aficionado Days still has plenty to offer in its two-days filled with fun. Saturday, April 13th, stroll through the streets of Ybor City while tasting the best tapas Ybor has to offer at over a dozen of our tasty establishments. After your journey is complete, unwind at the Italian Club for an after-party and smoker with music, premium cigars, desserts, and samples of rum, wine and beer. Round out your weekend on Sunday, April 14th at a traditional Spanish brunch at the Columbia Restaurant. In addition, experience the excitement of the Tapas Cooking Challenge with live judging by local celebrity foodies and the announcement of this year's winner. For further questions or to purchase tickets, please contact the Visitor Information Center at 813-241-8838 or at info@ybor.org.

I hope to see everyone at our monthly Membership luncheon on March 12th at the Columbia Restaurant.

Until next time...

ˇViva Ybor!
