Sarah's Musings

Hello, as I’m in the process of recovering from a cold it has made me realise how easy it is to take so much, like one’s health, for granted and it is all too easy to be so busy living that we can sometimes forget to sit back and be thankful for what we have.

This was again highlighted when we attended the Harvest Festival in St. Giles’ Church and gave thanks for the milk provided by the cows, sheep and goats to make our cheeses. Without the farmers looking after the animals we would have no milk to make our cheese. Quite a sobering thought and all the more real as we are still trying to adapt to an on-going shortage of sheep milk. Please do have patience with us as the shortage is completely out of our control.

Some Alternatives to Frozen Sheep Milk

For those of you intolerant to cows’ milk we do sell dried sheep milk powder and frozen goats’ milk. Please contact [email protected] or phone 01825 791 636 and ask for Rachel who presides over the despatch of all sheep and goat milk, dried and frozen.

An Invitation

To thank you so much for your continued support we are having 2 Mini Cheese Fests this year on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th December, at Tremains Farm from 10am until 2pm. There will be festive cheer, cheese to try and cheese to buy. NEW this year we have larger (400g) pieces of cheese in their own rather smart boxes and, as in previous years, you can make up your own hampers of cheese.

Christmas Orders

If there is something you would specifically like for Christmas, be it a (800g) of Brighton Blue or hampers to send out please do let us know as soon as possible, either by e-mail to [email protected] or by phone 01825 791 636.

Last Posting Date

The last date to post cheese out for Christmas will be Monday 16th December, so you could purchase cheese at one of our Mini Cheese Fests and we could post it out for you the following week.

Farmer George Celebrates his 80th Birthday

We were very privileged to be asked by George to celebrate his 80th birthday. A wonderful evening was spent with 200 of George’s very interesting friends sharing a meal and listening to a live band playing music from George’s heyday. And in true George fashion he asked not for presents but for everyone to bring a raffle prize and the raffle raised over 1,000 for St. Peter and St. James’ Hospice. He really is an example to us all, even thinking of those less fortunate than himself on his own special day.

Cheese Course Vouchers

With Christmas approaching some of you might be interested in purchasing, for a lover of cheese, one of our Vouchers for a Cheese Making Course. When purchased they have a year’s date and, subject to demand, we will run between 3 and 4 courses a month on a Friday or a Saturday. Please purchase online, e-mail [email protected] or phone 01825 791 636 where we can take bookings and card payments.

To quote a recent course attendee:

‘May I feedback that I thought the course was excellent, very good content mixed with real ‘hands-on’ experience, Mark really knows his craft. Having attended many cooking and bread making courses over the years I do know what is good and bad, and also value for money, yours ticks all the boxes.’ Mike from Surrey.

Course Date Availability

We have 1 space on our course taking place on Friday 6th December and then places on the following dates in 2014, Friday 24th January, Friday 7th February, Saturday 8th February, Friday 21st February and Saturday 22nd February.

A Course All of Your Own

Being Awarded

We are very proud to announce that our Little Sussex sheep milk cheese was awarded a Gold Medal and was best in the dairy category at the Soil Association Awards held in September. And Ashdown Foresters was awarded a Gold Medal and Brighton Blue, a Bronze Medal at the British Cheese Awards also held in September.

Being Shortlisted

We were also shortlisted for the Made in the South East Awards, sponsored by Insider magazine. We attended a fascinating dinner in Guildford and I can truly say I felt very humbled to even be there, we were in esteemed company with very important people from mainly technological based companies about which I understood very little. Yes I did feel a little like a fish out of water but it was an interesting experience none the less.

Are you a winner this month?

Our winner this month is Angela Hanes. Angela please contact me [email protected] to claim your cheese goodie bag.

I do hope you enjoy what remains of the misty fruitfulness that is Autumn and hope to see many of you in December.

With very best wishes
