New Hampshire Agriculture in the Classroom (NHAITC) is an organization which helps NH students develop an understanding and appreciation for agriculture and the role that it plays in their daily lives. One of our annual activities is the Agriculture Literacy Program. Each year a book with a theme related to agriculture, is chosen and read in schools throughout the state. Supporting educational materials and presentations are also made available for teachers to expand the learning and integrate the topic into existing curriculum such as math, science, social studies, language arts, etc.
The book that will be shared in 2013 is called Mini Milk Maids on the Mooove by Rianna, Sheridan and Rebecca Chaney. It is about twin sisters who visit a dairy farm and learn about how the cows are cared for and how milk is produced. The book is appropriate for grades K-3rd. After the presentation, each book is donated to the school library for continued enjoyment and learning.
We are looking to build a "herd" of volunteers including dairy club members who are willing to visit schools during the month of March in celebration of National Agriculture Day, March 19th. If you would like to participate as a reader at your local school or if you have any questions about this program, please contact us at NHAITC or call 603-224-1934.
This training is designed for current 4-H volunteers as well as those who wish to become involved in the 4-H program.
