As we mentioned, the AIC was an eye-opening event but one of the most interesting conversations we had was with Nicoline Kinch of Kolormondo. Nicoline is not from the 'colour industry' but became fascinated by colour some time ago and wanted to learn more about it 'as a hobby'. Nicoline, however, found colour charts and fans were not an accurate representation of the 'world of colour' - she rather visualized colour as a globe. The result is the development of a unique (and we mean unique) 3D puzzle to explain the concept of colour.
"Visualizing colours in 3D makes it systemized, logical, easy-to-understand and intuitive. It gives an overview and can be used by the beginner. It is complete and can hold any number of colours. It facilitates communication by enabling use of everyday words like "up/down" instead of "value/brightness" and "in/out" rather than "saturation".
Nicoline's vision is to get the Kolormondo Puzzle in to educational and other facilities world-wide to help and encourage non-professionals to become experts in the field of colour.
Having spent years trying to explain colour to our friends and family, we found this an incredibly useful tool - it explains the complexity of colour while making it simple.
And there's more!
Kolormondo, our friends in Sweden, has presented the world with a
free App (iOS and Android)
to help explain the concept of colour. You can flip, enlarge and zoom. You can travel into the globe, towards the grey scale and slice it horizontally and vertically. If you click on any of the 1500 hues, you will get its value in RGB-code.
We downloaded it immediately.
Will you?

The Palette
Volume 3, 2013
|
Dear ,
We are experiencing a rare occurrence here in the United Kingdom - there is something yellow in the sky that is causing the air to be very warm. Some more educated persons are suggesting that it's called "summer" - defined as 'the warmest of the four temperate seasons, falling between spring and autumn' (ref. www.wikipedia.org). Unaccustomed as most of us are to this phenomenon, we must trust our educated elders. Most of us just think it's weirdly hot and are wondering where the rain has gone!
So, as we enjoy what most experience as an annual event, we just have time to issue this edition of The Palette before heading out to buy something called a barbeque.
Meanwhile, for those in the Northern Hemisphere, we wish you all a very pleasant "summer" holiday. For those in the Southern Hemisphere, your time will come ....

AIC Colour 2013
The 12 th Congress of the International Colour Association took place from the 8-12 July in Gateshead, UK. Given that it was on our home turf, it was only natural for the Lovibond® team to support this event with full force.
The AIC is really a conference on 'everything colour' - a fascinating event bring together architects & fashion designers; paint manufacturers & dyers, academic professors & technology evangelists.
With over 125 years' experience in colour science, even the Lovibond® attendees had much to learn.
The Judd Award was presented to Roy S Berns who spoke enthusiastically on "Conversations with an Artist" - how the understanding of CIELAB can be enhanced and explained to address the concepts of 'vividness, depth and clarity' which are terms used more readily in artistic circles. He continued to explain how metamerism is also of great importance to a painter and explained the change in colour appearance under a variety of lighting and observer scenarios - an outdoor artist may be quite shocked to see his masterpiece displayed in a gallery. With some direct examples of work Berns has done on Van Gogh paintings, revitalizing the original colour displays (did you realize he used a violet background to enhance the vitality?), it really was a presentation worth attending. It is impossible to give the other sessions the credit they deserve. A Book of Abstracts is, however, available for download.

The PFXi Millennium
We've just shipped our 1000th PFXi.
As Matt Russell and Marke Reid (see right) celebrate this achievement on behalf of the whole Lovibond®

The first PFX i shipped in early 2010 with the first instruments going to a number of our key international distributors. Since then, demand has been increasing daily, making it one of the most successful product ranges in the company's history. We think Joseph would be proud of us. Thank you to all PFXi users, world-wide.

Stepping Out for Action Medical Research
Taking part in the Cotswold Plod, Team Lovibond® set out at midnight to hike, climb, clamber and scramble along the Cotswold Way, covering 40 miles to the finish point where they crossed the line in a very respectable 7th place. "We didn't really set out to win the Plod - we saw it as a team challenge to help raise money for a very good cause. Backed by kind donations from our colleagues, friends and families in Amesbury, Wadebridge and Wrexham, we are delighted to have achieved our goal."
PLODs are the ultimate team walking challenges. At around 40 miles, a PLOD is not a casual walk in the park. They are long, strenuous walking events that run through the night requiring team work, stamina and coordination.
"On behalf of Action Medical Research, we are thrilled that Team Lovibond® has come on board to support our charity by taking on the incredible challenge of the Cotswold PLOD. All the monies raised from Cotswold PLOD will be going to fund our vital projects to help save babies' lives." Tracey Edwards, Community Fundraising Manager (read more).
The "Plodders", backed by the support team, finally arrived at Cleeve Hill Golf Course at 3pm on the Saturday to a well-deserved barbeque and other refreshments.
