International Colour Day

Colour is, thanks to sight, one of the most influential phenomena in people's lives and also one of the channels that most greatly contributes to the perception of reality. Few things affect us as much as colour. It plays a vital part in our surroundings, whether at work, in public spaces or in our homes.

Colour and light (without light there is no colour), seem to interest everybody and are such a common component of our existence that we don't give it a thought. All surfaces are coloured.  Colour has an outstanding role in our society and tells us much about different cultures as a crucial aspect in defining our identity.

The proposal to establish a dedicated international colour day was proposed back in 2008 and has now spread throughout the AIC
(International Colour Association) network. All around the world memorable colour activities are scheduled to take place to celebrate.

Here are some of the activities you can expect to be taking place on March 21st:

- Arts exhibitions, architectural

  projects, design, decoration,

  fashion....

- Meetings, debates, scientific

  events.....
- Workshops on the use of colour

and light for both adults and

  children.
- Contests on colour and light

  design.

So decide your identifying colour and wear it - join us in celebrating the science of colour!

Volume 1, 2013
Dear ,

2013 literally skidded in here with a few weeks of what we Brits would call extremely cold weather - with temperatures of just below freezing, however, it was probably positively warm for some of our Lovibond users!

With the snow now cleared (for now at least) we are getting ready to prepare for more exciting events this quarter (see below) and some fun times ahead as we too celebrate the International Colour Day.

Our colleagues in the States have already been busy, attending the ASTM Committee Week in Florida. Having enjoyed a week in the sun though - we put them to work to provide a report to update you on activities within international development standards.

The Lovibond® Road Trip

We're on the road again during the next couple of months. Don't miss the chance to catch us at one of the following events:

ARABLAB: Dubai, UAE : 10 - 13 March

ARABLAB is possibly the only trade show for the Analytical Industry that reaches buyers from the growth markets such as the Middle East & Africa and the Indian Sub-Continent as well as China & Asia. This year, the Lovibond® team is joining up with our regional representative Venktron on Stand Number 864. These four days will provide the perfect opportunity for all Lovibond® users in the area to learn about the latest innovations in colour measurement.

INTERLAB TEC : Munich, Germany : 14-15 March

This event is new to the Lovibond® calendar. A dedicated Trade Fair on Quality Management, Analytics and Sustainability in Labs and Production of the Food industry, it provides an excellent platform for us to demonstrate how colour measurement is an essential part of the quality process in the food production chain. Visit us at Booth No 10 to view the PFXi, NC 45 and LC 100 ranges in action.

PITTCON : Philadelphia, USA : 17-21 March

Pittcon always provides the Lovibond® team with a perfect platform to introduce new products to the market and 2013 is no exception. Be sure to make a visit to Stand No: 1031 to learn the latest on what is available for colour measurement.

Back by popular demand, the team has also been requested to repeat the Short Course: "Color Measurement - It's More than Just Aesthetics" on Tuesday, 19th March. Don't miss out on this opportunity of an introduction to the importance of colour measurement in the industry and practical examples of measuring the color of different product types. It is an inter-active session where participants are encouraged to join in with on-hand activities.

Lovibond® Activities and the ASTM Committee

To keep up-to-date on the latest changes in industry, Lovibond Tintometer has been a long-time participant in the ASTM. The ASTM International, (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials [ASTM]), is a globally recognized leader in the development and delivery of international voluntary consensus standards. Today, some 12,000 ASTM standards are used around the world to improve product quality, enhance safety, facilitate market access and trade and build consumer confidence.

Lovibond Tintometer participates in many ASTM committees such as:

  • "D01" for Paint and Related Coatings -which (among many other criteria) sets the color standards of paint, varnish, lacquer, printing ink and other related coatings and materials in liquid, liquefiable, powder, or mastic form. ASTM D1209 (Pt-Co Color) and ASTM D1544 (Gardner Color) are two key standards created by this committee.
  • "D02" for Petroleum Products and Lubricants - This committee is one of ASTM's largest, with a current membership of approximately 1500 industry professionals and experts. This committee plays a preeminent role in all aspects relating to the standardization of Petroleum Products and Lubricants, including ASTM D1500 (ASTM Color) and ASTM156 (Saybolt Color). These are just a couple of the many color standards administered by this committee.
There are some interesting developments now happening including plans for a new Lecture for the January 2014 meeting. Read here for our full report.

The BBC Runs Coverage on Colour Science

The British Broadcasting Company (BBC Radio 4) recently ran a new series dedicated to Colour. The programme was a collection of interviews with experts in the field of Colour Science, many of whom are Colour Group (GB) members! Some interviews were made during their November meeting "Colour for Business and the Professions". The first broadcast was on Monday 28th January and it continued throughout the week.

But don't worry if you didn't catch the live programmes. They still available to listen to on the BBC Website
