Join the movement about movement! The Every Body Walk! Collaborative is hosting a 2013 National Walking Summit in Washington D.C., October 1-3, 2013. The Summit will convene national and local leaders in inspiring conversations and sessions that will build capacity, develop strategies, increase momentum and showcase best practices for increasing investments in walkability and walking.

Cal WALKS & Walk SF on KQED Forum: Drivers Not Punished for Pedestrian Deaths
 Cal WALKS Board Member David Grant and Walk SF Executive Director Elizabeth Stampe join Michael Krasny on KQED's Forum to discuss the recent Center for Investigative Reporting piece on the lack of punishment for drivers who are literally getting away with murder. The piece uncovers the disturbing lack of enforcement and prosecution of drivers who kill pedestrians in the Bay Area--which is reflective of the broader trend across the state. Motor Vehicle Traffic-Related Pedestrian Deaths - United States, 2001-2010
This latest report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention examines trends in pedestrian fatalities nationally--uncovering many racial and ethnic disparities, as well as age disparities. The report found that pedestrians over age 75 are twice as likely to die when involved in a collision than all other age groups and that the American Indian/Alaska Natives, Hispanic, and black populations have higher pedestrian death rates than whites.

Pedestrian Safety: A Road Safety Manual for Decision-Makers & Practitioners
The World Health Organization (WHO) has released a new multidisciplinary manual aimed at  strengthening national and local capacity to implement pedestrian safety measures in settings worldwide through a comprehensive, holistic approach that includes enforcement, engineering and education. 

Evaluating Pedestrian Safety Improvements
The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of new pedestrian countermeasure installations--including  hybrid beacons (PHB), rectangular rapid flashing beacons (RRFB), and in-street signs--on pedestrian saftey to assist in informing future pedestrian safety initiatives.

This latest factsheet from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) examines trends in traffic fatalities and injuries among school-aged children.

Evaluating Standards & Practices for Facilitating Visually Impaired People's Mobility in the Built Environment
The Institute of Transport Economics in the Norwegian Centre for Transport Research has released a report that reviews wayfinding and makes recommendations for its improvement in transport systems, with an emphasis on inclusive design and tactile paving.

Flashing-Yellow-Arrow Research Spotlights Pedestrian Safety Risk

This study by the Oregon Transportation Research & Education Consortium (OTREC) found that  drivers at intersections with flashing-yellow-arrow traffic signals often do not look for pedestrians before turning.

[Webinar] Making the Most of the Transportation Alternatives Program

MAP-21 makes some substantial changes to the funding stream that has fueled pedestrian and bicycle projects around the country. Among the changes in the new Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP): combining previously separate programs, creating a sub-allocation requirement for MPOs and a population-based funding formula, and changing the entities that can apply for funding. SSTI will hold a meeting in early May to review the state of the program and focus on ways that DOTs and their local partners can select, design, and deliver the projects that best advance pedestrian and bicycle mobility and access.
